All blocks in Bengal to get automatic weather stations
The West Bengal Government led by Mamata Banerjee has gone a step ahead of the Centre to help farmers in getting constant weather forecasts, by setting up automatic weather stations (AWS) in 300 agricultural blocks across the state.
Purnendu Basu, the state Agriculture Minister, said setting up AWSs would help the farmers get timely updates on the weather forecast and specifically of their own block. Hence, they can plan accordingly for a better yield and it will also help avoid damage to crops as the weather will no more remain unpredictable for farmers in any part of the state. The weather frequently keeps changing on a regular basis, which is why AWSs have become essential in all blocks.
The Agriculture Minister said that AWSs in 145 blocks were set up around two and a half years ago. Now the target is to ensure the availability of the same in all the blocks and at the same time the task of upgrading the existing AWSs will also be taken up shortly. New software would be introduced for better monitoring of the changes in climate and dissemination of the information on weather forecast.
There are around 1700 employees of the state agriculture department who maintain regular interaction with farmers to advice them about modern techniques to get a better yield instead of using harmful fertilisers. All of them carry a tablet PC which they use to spread awareness among farmers about the updates and scientific measures which could be taken up for better yield and to check damage of crops.
With introduction of the new software in the AWSs, these employees will start getting the weather updates in their tablets and can disseminate information among farmers in the area.
The move of the state agriculture department in setting up AWSs in all the blocks will help farmers get weather updates even while working in their fields. The AWSs will also help farmers to decide when to take their produce to market after getting the forecast on rainfall.

মুখ্যমন্ত্রী মমতা বন্দ্যোপাধ্যায়ের নেতৃত্বে পশ্চিমবঙ্গ সরকার কৃষকদের সাহায্য করার জন্য রাজ্য জুড়ে ৩০০ টি ব্লকে স্বয়ংক্রিয় আবহাওয়া স্টেশন স্থাপন করার সিদ্ধান্ত নিয়েছে।
রাজ্যের কৃষিমন্ত্রী, পূর্ণেন্দু বসু বলেন, এই আবহাওয়া স্টেশনগুলি কৃষকদের তাদের নিজ নিজ ব্লকের আবহাওয়ার পূর্বাভাস পেতে সাহায্য করবে। অত: পর, তারা ভালো ফসল ফলানোর একটি পূর্বপরিকল্পনা করতে পারবেন এবং এর ফলে ফসলের ক্ষতি এড়ানো সম্ভব হবে এবং রাজ্যের সব জায়গার আবহাওয়া সম্পর্কে একটা ধারণা থাকবে কৃষকদের।
কৃষিমন্ত্রী বলেন, প্রায় আড়াই বছর আগে ১৪৫টি ব্লকে AWSs স্থাপন করা হয়েছে। এখন লক্ষ্য সমস্ত ব্লকে এটি স্থাপন করা।
রাজ্য কৃষি বিভাগের প্রায় ১৭০০ কর্মী যারা কৃষকদের সঙ্গে নিয়মিত যোগাযোগ রাখে এবং ক্ষতিকর সার ব্যবহার না করে তারা কিভাবে আধুনিক পদ্ধতিতে ভালো ফলন পেতে পারেন সেই সম্পর্কে তাদের পরামর্শ দেন। বৈজ্ঞানিক ব্যবস্থার মাধমে ভাল ফলন এবং ফসলের ক্ষতির পরিমাণ পরীক্ষা সম্পর্কে কৃষকদের মধ্যে সচেতনতা তৈরির সময় তারা একটি ট্যাবলেট ব্যবহার করেন।
AWSs এই নতুন সফটওয়্যার এর মাধ্যমে এইসব কর্মচারীরা তাদের ট্যাবলেটে আবহাওয়া সংক্রান্ত সব আপডেট পেয়ে যাবেন এবং এলাকায় কৃষকদের মধ্যে সেই তথ্য প্রচার করতে পারবেন।
সব ব্লকে AWSs স্থাপন – রাজ্য কৃষি বিভাগের এই অভিনব পদক্ষেপ কৃষকদের যেমন আবহাওয়ার সবরকম আপডেট পেতে সাহায্য করবে তেমনই বৃষ্টিপাতের পূর্বাভাসও দেবে এর ফলে আগে থেকে কৃষকরা ফসল তুলে রাখতে পারবেন বাজারে বিক্রির জন্য।
