State Govt to soon start Kakdwip-Sagar Island RO-RO ferry service
The Bengal Government is soon going to start a RO-RO (roll on-roll off) ferry service between Kakdwip and Sagar Island in the Sunderbans, which would be able to carry vehicles (both passenger vehicles and trucks) as well as people.
The vessel has been bought at a cost of Rs 3 crore. This RO-RO service across the Muriganga river (between Lot No. 8 jetty in Kakdwip and Kochuberia on Sagar Island) would start soon after the completion of demonstrations, which are taking place at Babughat in Kolkata.
The vessel is such that it can operate during high tide and low tide too, the two times of the day when the local people face difficulty as other ferry services are suspended. Another advantage is that it has the capacity to ferry 20 vehicles (whereas the ones operating, which are private, can carry a maximum of ten).
This ferry service would also be especially helpful during the month-long Sagar Mela festivities, starting from early January, when lakhs of devotees from across the country, and also domestic and foreign tourists, converge in Kakdwip to cross over to Sagar Island.
This service is part of the government’s state-wide waterway development plans to create a network of RO-RO services as well as renovate and build jetties.

কাকদ্বীপ-সাগর পণ্যবাহী গাড়ি পারাপারে নতুন জলযান তৈরি করছে রাজ্য সরকার
শীঘ্রই রাজ্য সরকার কাকদ্বীপ ও সাগরদ্বীপের মধ্যে একটি রোরো ফেরী পরিষেবা চালু করতে চলেছে। এই ফেরীতে মানুষের পাশাপাশি যানবাহন, এমনকি ট্রাক-ও পারাপার করানো সম্ভব।
এই ফেরীটি তৈরিতে খরচ হয়েছে ৩ কোটি টাকা। ফেরীটি চলবে মুড়িগঙ্গা নদীতে (কাকদ্বীপের লট নম্বর ৮ জেটি ও সাগরদ্বীপের কছুবেড়িয়ার মধ্যে)। আপাতত ফেরীটি বাবুঘাটে মহড়া দিচ্ছে। এই মহড়া শেষ হলেই পরিষেবা দেবে নির্দিষ্ট জায়গায়।
এই ফেরীটির বিশেষত্ব হল, জোয়ার ও ভাঁটার সময় যখন নদীতে অন্যান্য ফেরীদের চলাচল বন্ধ থাকে, তখনও দক্ষতার সঙ্গে নদী পারাপার করতে পারবে এটি। এছাড়াও অন্যান্য ফেরীগুলি যেখানে সর্বাধিক ১০টি গাড়ি পারাপার করাতে পারে, সেখানে এই ফেরীটিতে আছে ২০টি গাড়ির জায়গা।
জানুয়ারি মাস থেকে শুরু হতে চলা মাস-ব্যাপী গঙ্গাসাগরমেলাতেও এই পরিষেবা খুব উপযোগী হবে। এই মেলাকে কেন্দ্র করে লাখ লাখ দেশী ও বিদেশী পুন্যার্থি আসেন সাগরদ্বীপে।
রাজ্য সরকার রাজ্য জুড়ে যে জলপথে পরিবহনের উন্নতি করছে, এই পরিষেবা তারই অংশ। এই উন্নয়নের পরিকল্পনার উদ্দেশ্য, রোরো পরিষেবার নেটওয়ার্ক তৈরি এবং জেটি নির্মাণ ও সংস্কার।
