It is official: Rosogolla belongs to Bengal
The Bengal Government on Tuesday, November 14 won the two-and-a-half-year-old battle over rosogolla as Chennai-based Geographical Indications (GI) Registry announced that one of India’s signature sweets originated in the state and not in Odisha.
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had initiated the idea of registering the patent in favour of Bengal. Welcoming the judgement, she tweeted, “Sweet news for us all. We are very happy and proud that Bengal has been granted GI (Geographical Indication) status for Rosogolla”.
According to the deputy controller of patents and designs in Kolkata, the dispute (with Odisha) that rosogolla originated in Bengal has been settled under the GI Act that authenticates a product relating to either a geographical location or community or society.
The Bengal Government had quoted 19th-century history to claim rosogolla was invented by Nabin Chandra Das, a famous sweetmeat maker, in 1868.
Bengal getting the patent has the potential to translate into good business for confectioners.
The director of sweet-maker KC Das Private Ltd. and a great great grandson of Nabin Chandra thanked the Chief Minister for her proactive role. He also said the State Government had borne the entire expenditure of the dispute-settling process.
Bengal is already the holder of 14 GI tags – Darjeeling tea, nakshi kantha, Santiniketan leather goods, the Bankura horse, Laxman Bhog, Khirsapati (Himsagar) and Fazli mangoes, Shantipur, Baluchari and Dhaniakhali sarees, Joynagar moa, Bardhaman sitabhog and mihidana, and gobindobhog and tulaipanji rice.
A GI tag entails that no other region can manufacture or produce an item that has been awarded the status by the Chennai-based institution. For example, tea growers in Nepal cannot call their produce Darjeeling tea, which there was a tendency till the tag was awarded to Darjeeling. It assures the exclusivity of the product as well as its essence and quality.

রসগোল্লা বাংলারই, উচ্ছসিত মুখ্যমন্ত্রী

২০১৫ সালে রসগোল্লার আঁতুড়ঘরের নয়া দাবিদার হিসেবে উঠে আসে ওডিশার নাম। নিজেদের রসগোল্লার উত্সস্থল হিসেবে দাবি করে জিআই-এর অধিকারের দাবিতে লড়াই শুরু করে ওডিশা সরকার। তাদের যুক্তি ছিল, উল্টোরথের পরদিন ওডিশায় পালিত হয় রসগোল্লা দিবস। তবে বাংলাও লড়াইয়ে পিছিয়ে থাকে না। প্রয়োজনীয় নথি পেশ করে রসগোল্লার মালিকানা দাবি করে পশ্চিমবঙ্গ সরকার।
রসগোল্লার বাঙালিয়ানা নিয়ে পেশ করা হয় নানা জোরদার যুক্তি। দাবি করা হয়, দেশের কোনও অংশেই ছানার কোনও মিষ্টি ভোগ হিসেবে দেওয়ার প্রচলন নেই। দেবতাকে নিবেদন করে ক্ষীরের মিষ্টি দেওয়ারই প্রচলন রয়েছে।
ওডিশার যুক্তির বাস্তব কোনও ভিত্তি না-থাকায় তাদের দাবি খারিজ করে রসগোল্লার GI রেজিস্ট্রেশন পশ্চিমবঙ্গকেই দেওয়া হয়েছে।
এদিন টুইট করে মুখ্যমন্ত্রী বলেন, ‘সবার জন্য একটি মিষ্টি খবর। বাংলার রসগোল্লা জি আই ট্যাগ পেয়েছে, আমরা সকলে আনন্দিত ও গর্বিত’।
