“Opp must begin their search for a new Leader of Opposition”- An interview with Abhishek Banerjee

You are addressing 3-4 meetings everyday, in this scorching heat. How are people responding?

Abhishek: The spontaneity of the people is special. The love, support and response of people is really humbling. Despite the summer heat, people are coming in large numbers to meetings, sometimes scheduled at 1 PM. This love and support of the people is a clear indication that it is only a matter of time before Mamata Banerjee’s Ma-Mati-Manush government returns for a second term.

What strikes you most at these big rallies?

Abhishek: The way women are turning out in large numbers. After becoming the Chief Minister, Mamata Banerjee has taken a lot of initiatives for women. Earlier, the CPI(M) and its frontal organisations like DYFI would only talk of women’s welfare and upliftment. Mamata Banerjee has fulfilled the promises she made. 50% seats in the panchayats are now reserved for women. No other Chief Minister has done that before.

Overall, the love, energy, enthusiasm and support that we are getting from people confirms that the government of Maa-Mati-Manush will return with a landslide majority.

What is the main message you are delivering in your speeches?

Abhishek: In 2011, when we went to the people to seek their votes, we talked of ending 34 years of Left rule and establishing a government which speaks of peace, not violence. Of development, not destruction. We promised a government that works for the people and always stands beside them.

In 2016, we are asking people to judge us based on the work done in the last four and a half years. Judge us on our performance. Within the constraints of a huge debt burden, our work should be the yardstick for judging us. A vote for Trinamool is a vote to continue the surge of development. Our main plank this time is development, development and only development.

You are addressing almost 100 to 120 rallies this time. What is the difference in campaigning this time compared to the 2014 Lok Sabha polls?

Abhishek: In 2014, the party had given me the opportunity to contest the elections from the Diamond Harbour Lok Sabha seat. Then, I was focussing on the seven Assembly constituencies in my Lok Sabha seat and could not campaign anywhere else. I tried to reach out to the maximum number of people in my constituency.

This time I am not contesting. Our party has only one leader – Mamata Banerjee. Everyone else is a worker. Mamata Banerjee is the leader for all of us. Whatever responsibilities are placed on my shoulders by the party, I try to fulfill them to the best of my abilities. I will continue to do so in the future.

Around 40% of the voters are between the ages of 18 to 35. What do you want to tell them?

Abhishek: I would just like to request you, especially the ones who are voting for the first time, to exercise your democratic right and vote. Vote for whomsoever you want. But for those who were born in the mid-1990s, I have one request. Have a word with the elder members of your family, your parents, your uncles, your aunts or your neighbours and ask them to tell you the history of modern Bengal. Ask them what the state of Bengal was in the seventies and eighties, and compare that to your current experience of living in Bengal. Based on that, I request you to write the future.

We noticed that you are doing three-four rallies a day, but you are not speaking to the media. In fact, this is the first interview you are giving in this election. Is that part of your style or your strategy?

Abhishek: I am a disciplined soldier of the party.  I would like actions to be my identity. Actions should speak louder than words.

You have grown up watching Mamata Di and obviously she has influenced you. What is the one character in her which you think is the most inspirational for you?

Abhishek: Her fighting spirit. She never ever gives up. In 2004, Trinamool contested all Lok Sabha seats in Bengal but won only one. Only Mamata Banerjee had won her seat. Even that did not deter her. She fought her way back.

Several political parties were formed after breaking away from the Congress. None of them is running a government independently now, except Trinamool. For me, this is true fighting spirit.

What is the one new learning you had in the year 2016 which has made you a better person?

Abhishek: Your relationship with people must be built on trust. Even if all the evil forces come together, they will not be able to harm you if you are blessed with the love and support of people.

Is Surya Kanta Mishra winning or losing?

Abhishek: Losing. (They must start their search today to find a new Leader of Opposition.)

Trinamool winning 200+ or less than 200 seats?

Abhishek: The people of Bengal are most qualified to answer this question. They will decide. But since you have asked me, it is 200+.

আপনি রোজ ৩টে কি ৪টে করে মিটিং করছেন এই গরমে, কেমন সাড়া পাচ্ছেন?

অভিষেক: মানুষের স্বতঃস্ফুর্ততা সত্যিই লক্ষণীয়। মানুষের সাড়া, ভালবাসা ও সমর্থন আমাদের মন ছুঁয়েছে। কখনো কখনো দুপুর ১টার তীব্র তাপদাহকে উপেক্ষা করেও বিপুল সংখ্যায়ে মানুষ আসছেন আমাদের জনসভাগুলিতে। এই জনসমর্থন এবং ভালবাসাই বলে দিচ্ছে যে মমতা বন্দ্যোপাধ্যায়ের দ্বিতীয়বারের মা-মাটি-মানুষের সরকার শুধুমাত্র সময়ের অপেক্ষা।

এই নির্বাচনী জনসভাগুলিতে কী সবচেয়ে বেশি আপনার নজর কেড়েছে?

অভিষেক: যেভাবে মহিলারা দলে দলে যোগ দিচ্ছেন আমাদের সভায়, তা সত্যি নজর কাড়ার মতো। মমতা বন্দ্যোপাধ্যায় মুখ্যমন্ত্রী হওয়ার মহিলাদের জন্য প্রচুর কাজ  করেছেন। আগে CPI(M) এবং DYFI-র মতো ওদের সংগঠনগুলি শুধু মুখে বলে যেত নারীকল্যাণের কথা। মমতা বন্দ্যোপাধ্যায় সেখানে সব প্রতিশ্রুতি রক্ষ্যা করেছেন। পঞ্চায়েতে মহিলাদের জন্য ৫০% আসন এখন সংরক্ষিত। ভারতবর্ষের অন্য কোনো মুখ্যমন্ত্রী এটা করতে পারেননি।

সার্বিকভাবে মানুষের ভালবাসা, উৎসাহ, উদ্দীপনা, সমর্থন প্রমাণ করছে যে মা-মাটি-মানুষের সরকার বিপুল সংখ্যাগরিষ্ঠতা নিয়ে ফিরে আসতে চলেছে।

আপনার বক্তৃতার মধ্য দিয়ে কোন মূল বার্তা পৌঁছে  দিচ্ছেন?

অভিষেক: আমরা ২০১১ সালে যখন মানুষের কাছে গিয়েছিলাম, ওদের বলেছিলাম ৩৪ বছরের বাম অপশাসনের অবসান ঘটিয়ে এমন এক সরকার নিয়ে আসুন যে সরকার শান্তির কথা বলবে, সন্ত্রাসের নয়। যে সরকার উন্নয়নের কথা বলবে, ধ্বংসের কথা নয়। আমরা এমন এক সরকারের প্রতিশ্রুতি দিয়েছিলাম যা মানুষের জন্য কাজ করবে, মানুষের পাশে দাঁড়াবে।

২০১৬ সালে আমরা মানুষের কাছে আবেদন রাখছি যে বিগত সাড়ে চার বছরে যে কাজ করেছি, তার নিরীখে আমাদের বিচার করুন। উন্নয়নের নিরীখে আমাদের বিচার করুন। বিশাল ঋণের বোঝা থাকা স্বত্তেও আমরা যতটা  কাজ করে উঠতে পেরেছি, তাই হওয়া উচিত আমাদেরকে বিচার করার মাপকাঠি। তৃণমূলকে দেওয়া আপনার ভোট হবে উন্নয়নের এই ঢেউকে এগিয়ে নিয়ে চলার আদেশ। আমাদের এবারে একটাই হাতিয়ার – উন্নয়ন, উন্নয়ন আর উন্নয়ন।

আপনি তো প্রায় ১০০–১২০ জনসভা করছেন এবারে, ২০১৪ সালে আপনার লোকসভা নির্বাচনের প্রচারের সঙ্গে কী পার্থক্য বুঝছেন?

অভিষেক: ২০১৪-তে ডায়মন্ড হারবার লোকসভা কেন্দ্র থেকে দল আমাকে প্রার্থী করে আমাকে সুযোগ দিয়েছিল লোকসভায় নির্বাচন লড়ার। আমার লোকসভার আসনের অন্তর্গত যে ৭টি বিধানসভা আসন ছিল, তাতেই বেশি মনোযোগ করতে পেরেছিলাম, অন্য কোথাও নয়। চেষ্টা করেছিলাম যাতে করে আমার নির্বাচন কেন্দ্রের বেশিরভাগ মানুষের কাছে পৌঁছে যেতে পারি।

এইবারে আমি নিজে প্রার্থী নই। আমাদের দলের একজনই নেত্রী – মমতা বন্দ্যোপাধ্যায়। বাকি সবাই হলেন কর্মী। মমতা বন্দ্যোপাধ্যায় আমাদের সকলের নেত্রী।  দল আমাকে যে গুরুদায়িত্ব দেয় আমি আমার যথাসাধ্য ক্ষমতা অনুযায়ী সেই গুরুদায়িত্ব পালন করার চেষ্টা করি এবং আগামীদিনেও করব।

প্রায় ৪০% ভোটার রয়েছেন যাঁদের বয়স ১৮ থেকে ৩৫ বছরের মধ্যে। তাঁদের উদ্দ্যেশ্যে কী বলবেন?

অভিষেক: তাঁদেরকে, বিশেষ করে যাঁরা এবার প্রথমবার ভোট দিতে যাবেন, তাঁদেরকে আমি একটি কথাই বলব, যে আপনার গণতান্ত্রিক অধিকার প্রয়োগ করে ভোট দিন। যে কাউকে খুশি দিতে পারেন। কিন্তু আপনাদের যাঁদের জন্ম নব্বইয়ের দশকের মাঝামাঝি, তাঁদের প্রতি আমার একটি অনুরোধ আছে।  নিজের পরিবারের বয়:জ্যেষ্ঠদের সাথে একবার কথা বলে নিন – আপনার বাবা-মা, কাকু-কাকিমা, প্রতিবেশী যাঁরা আছেন, জেনে নিন তাঁদের কাছ থেকে আধুনিক বাংলার ইতিহাস। তাঁদেরকে জিজ্ঞাসা করুন সত্তরের দশকে এবং আশির দশকে পশ্চিমবঙ্গের কী হাল ছিল, এবং তা মিলিয়ে দেখুন বাংলায়  এখনকার জীবনযাত্রার সঙ্গে। এর ভিত্তিতেই আমি অনুরোধ করব আপনাদের যথাযত ভবিষ্যৎ গড়ে তোলার।

আমরা লক্ষ্য করেছি যে আপনি দিনে ৩–৪টে নির্বাচনী জনসভা করা স্বত্তেও সংবাদমাধ্যমের সামনে কোনো বক্তব্য রাখছেন না। এইটিই বোধয় এই নির্বাচন চলাকালীন আপনার দেওয়া  প্রথম সাক্ষাৎকার। এটা কি আপনার স্বভাবসিদ্ধ নাকি কোনো কৌশলগত আচরণ?

অভিষেক: আমি দলের একজন শৃঙ্খলাপরায়ণ সৈনিক। আমার কাজই আমার পরিচয় হয়ে উঠুক, এটাই আমি চাইব। Actions should speak louder than words.

ছোটবেলা থেকেই আপনি মমতা বন্দ্যোপাধ্যায়কে দেখে বড় হয়েছেন, এবং খুব স্বাভাবিকভাবেই তাঁর দ্বারা অনুপ্রাণিত হয়েছেন। তার চরিত্রের কোন বৈশিষ্ট্য আপনাকে সবচেয়ে বেশি অনুপ্রেরণা দেয়?

অভিষেক: তাঁর লড়াই করার মানসিকতা। তিনি কখনো জীবনে হার মানতে শেখেননি। আপনারা দেখেছেন ২০০৪ সালে বাংলার প্রত্যেকটি লোকসভা আসনে আমরা প্রতিদ্বন্দ্বিতা করেছিলাম কিন্তু জিতেছিলাম একটি আসনে। একমাত্র মমতা বন্দ্যোপাধ্যায়ই জিতেছিলেন। মাত্র একটি জিতেও তিনি কিন্তু হার মানেননি, ঘুরে দাঁড়িয়েছিলেন আবার।

কংগ্রেস ভেঙে অনেক দল তৈরি হয়েছে কিন্তু আজকে ভারতবর্ষের পরিষদীয় গণতান্ত্রিক রাজনীতিতে এমন কোনো দল নেই যারা কিনা স্বতন্ত্রভাবে সরকার চালাচ্ছে, একমাত্র তৃণমূল কংগ্রেস ছাড়া। এটাই আমার কাছে সত্যিকারের fighting spirit.

২০১৬–তে নতুন কি শিখলেন যা আপনাকে আরও ভালো মানুষ হতে সাহায্য করবে। 

অভিষেক: মানুষের সঙ্গে আপনার সম্পর্ক সততার ভিত্তিতেই গড়ে তোলা উচিত। পৃথিবীর সকল অশুভ শক্তিও যদি আপনার উপর নেমে আসে, আপনার কিচ্ছু ক্ষতি হবে না যদি মানুষের ভালবাসা আর সমর্থন আপনার পাশে থাকে।

শেষে দুটি চটজলদি প্রশ্ন

সূর্যকান্ত মিশ্র হারবে না জিতবে?

অভিষেক:  হারবে। (ওরা আজ থেকেই নতুন বিরোধী দলনেতার খোঁজ শুরু করে দিক।)

তৃণমূল কত আসন পাবে: ২০০–র বেশি না ২০০–র কম?

অভিষেক: এ প্রশ্নের উত্তর দেওয়ার  সবচেয়ে বেশি যোগ্যতা রাখেন বাংলার মানুষই। তাঁরাই এর বিচার করবেন। কিন্তু যেহেতু আপনি আমায় একথা জিজ্ঞাসা করেছেন, আমি বলব যে আমাদের প্রাপ্ত আসন সংখ্যা হবে ২০০-র বেশি।
