Sudip Bandyopadhyay suggests including Belur-Dakkhineshwar in religious tourism circuit

Hon’ble Minister has placed names of 13 pilgrimage sites identified for development and beautification under your scheme. Why have you not inducted under this scheme Dakkhineshwar and Belur Math? Belur is Swami Vivekananda’s dream; Ramakrishna Paramhansa Dev’s name is associated with Dakkhineshwar.

Even our Prime Minister Hon’ble  Modi Ji before election went to take blessings from Belur Math. After election he went to visit the present President Swami Atmasthananda Ji Maharaj who is very ill and is admitted at Golpark Ramakrishna Mission Hospital.

My question is that whether the list you have declared can induct Belur Math and Ramakrishna Mission? There is Nimtala Ghat on the river Ganges side where Kabiguru Rabindranath Tagore was cremated; Ramakrishna Paramhansa Dev and Swami Vivekananda were cremated at Ratan Babu Ghat. These are all on the same area. I think that these spots can be very positive spiritual places for the tourists.

I am surprised to see that in 2013-2014 & 2014-15 you have not allotted a single rupee for the state of West Bengal. It is no more a communist state. Religious and spiritual places are there in Bengal. Why can’t the government consider further allocation for the two states in a bigger way?

Thank you.

WB CM to develop Jaigaon as a “planned city”

West Bengal Chief Minister Ms Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday held a review meeting with Bhutan officials, including external affairs minister Norbu Wangchuk, at Jaigaon on the Indo-Bhutan border.

Sources said that officials discussed the construction of a second (new) gate of Bhutan like the entry point located at Phuentsholing, and a joint survey for development work, including an Immigration Check Post, on the Indian side.

Chief Secretary Sanjay Mitra and principal secretary for urban development Debasish Sen and other officials accompanied the CM as she met minister Wangchuk and other officials.

Addressing a government programme at Alipurduar, WB CM said:”We plan to set up a municipality at Jaigaon and make it a planned city.”

In her speech, the Chief Minister pointed out that people in this region will be able to do good business as transport services for both goods and passengers will be started in Asian countries like Bhutan, Bangladesh and Nepal.

Keeping an eye on industrial development in north Bengal, the CM said that members of the chambers of commerce can demand what they need when an ‘industrial meet’ will be organised in north Bengal in November.

She added that the Biswa Bangla Sammelan will be held on 8 and 9 January in Kolkata.

“A total of Rs 50 crore has been allotted for the construction of an administrative building where 36 departments will be accommodated. We will develop Jayanti for tourism. A total of Rs 20 crore was allotted for a medical hub here,” she added.

“Readying infrastructure here will take time because this is a newly-formed district. Land officials have started a survey to settle land records,” the Chief Minister said.

Foreign bloggers and travel writers soak in four-day festive spirit

They came not knowing what to expect. They returned overwhelmed.Travel writers, bloggers and documentary filmmakers from United States, Canada, France, Spain, Portugal and Argentina, arrived in Kolkata on the eve of Durga Puja and experienced all facets of the festival during their week-long stay.

From watching artisans craft clay idols to observing artists create gigantic pandals on streets, soaking in the festive spirit to watching the immersion of the idols, the group of 26 was privy to the many shades of one of India’s biggest festivals.

Soaking in the festivities

“That a festival celebrated on such a grand scale is still relatively unknown to the west is unthinkable. I believe Durga Puja can attract hordes of western visitors because it is a truly unique experience, very different from what one can experience back home,“ said Dominick A Merle, co-founder of International Food, Wine & Travel Writers Association and International Travel Writers Alliance. Merle intends to write about Durga Puja when he is back home, so the world knows what it has been missing.

French journalist and travel writer Julie Olagnol is convinced Durga Puja can become one of the biggest attractions for western tourists. “In my home town Lyon, we have a light festival for four days in December. I remember how it was a small affair when I was a child and how it evolved into a huge event that now attracts tourists from all over the world. I believe that it will be the same for Durga Puja, maybe even bigger, because this seems to be the world’s biggest open art gallery ,“ she said.

A unique experience

The team that did rounds of several Pujas, including Sovabazar Rajbari, loved the intricate artwork at 41 Palli and found the girl child theme at Kashi Bose Lane the most interesting. If the variety of art and craft on display impressed them, it was the spirit of the people that took their breath away .

“Apart from the religious and spiritual meaning that the festival holds for Bengalis, Durga Puja appears to bring people together. During a previous visit to the city, I had stayed with a Muslim family and they told me how much Durga Puja meant to them. They didn’t follow the religion, but contributed to it in a myriad ways. I learned that thousands earn their livelihood from crafting the decorations, which at times take up to a year,“ said Olagnol.

Wowed by Kolkata’s spirit

Merle too was struck by the harmony during the festival. “Durga Puga, I discovered, is a religious festival with added parts of party, passion and peace, where Hindus, Muslims, Christians, Jews and even atheists can put aside their differences for four days of festivities,“ he said.

Among his unforgettable moments were visiting the Dominique Lapierre Home for handicapped, abused, abandoned or lost children and watching them perform at their own Puja and seeing a rickshaw-puller tie his vehicle to a pole and join a long queue to a pandal.

The immersion touched a chord with Olagnol. “I’ve realized what ephemeral means. People were sad after the end of the festival, in which they had put in so much work. Yet all of this will return next year with even greater vigour and splendour,“ she added.

Shah Rukh Khan to promote Bengal as ‘sweetest’ tourist destination

Bollywood actor and brand ambassador for West Bengal, Shah Rukh Khan, will be promoting Bengal as “the sweetest tourist destination” in an ad film by the state tourism department to attract domestic and foreign travellers. He is expected to come to Kolkata for two days by the end of October for an indoor shoot.

“We have roped in superstar Shah Rukh Khan for promoting tourist destinations in the state. West Bengal Tourism Development Corporation (WBTDC) has set aside Rs 8 crore for the ad film, for which we have hired the reputed agency Ogilvy & Mather for Rs 75 lakh. Darjeeling, Dooars, Bolpur and the sea-side tourist destinations would be among the touchpoints,” said state tourism minister Bratya Basu at a press conference on Wednesday.

Basu said several films of at least one-minute duration would be prepared for the campaign, with the catchline ‘Experience Bengal – the sweetest part of India’.

Basu added that Shah Rukh is not charging any fees for the new ad-films. “He has said he would not take any money, but we know he is a professional actor and provisions have been made for his payment,” he said.

TMC MP and superstar of the Bengali film industry, Deepak Adhikary alias Dev, would also feature in the promotional campaign.

The minister also said the state was looking at a number of projects under the PPP model to come up with upmarket as well as budget hotels and resorts at tourist destinations.

“At Gajoldoba in Jalpaiguri district, Sterling Holiday and Resort Ltd would build a star category eco-resort while Seal Tea Export Pvt Ltd and Gangadhar Developer Pvt Ltd would put up budget category eco-resorts. Shikaria Infra Project Pvt Ltd will also build a resort on PPP model over 75 acre at Sabuj Dweep in Hooghly district. Techno India Group would build a budget category resort at Jharkhali in South-24 Parganas,” he said.

WB CM names Gajoldoba tourist hotspot ‘Bhorer Aalo’

The state government is setting up a tourist hotspot at Gajoldoba in North Bengal to be named ‘Bhorer Aalo’.

The spot, identified by Mamata Banerjee during her election campaign in 2011, is located near Teesta Barrage in Jalpaiguri district. The seven reserve forests are an hour’s drive from there.

Sprawling over 210 acres of government land, the spot is encircled by the Teesta barrage catchment on one side and a bird sanctuary on the other where over 15,000 birds come annually.

“For the last two years, we have been developing the infrastructure of the area with PWD constructing three connecting roads of 31 km, 9 km and 7 km to the spot. A power sub-station has been set up and two huge water tanks are there,” Dr Amit Mitra, State Finance Minister, told reporters.

Several star category hotels, including three, four and five star, would come up along with two budget hotels for the middle class. A nine-hole golf course, too, would come up.

“We would set up a golf training centre and small cottages at the golf course,” Mitra added.

Sterling Holiday Resorts, in joint venture with Thomas Cook, had won the bid for the three-star hotel, while Summit Group, which owns Darjeeling’s Swiss Hotel and Seal Group, that promotes tea tourism in North Bengal, had won bids for two budget hotels.

“One lakh tourists can be served by these three hotels annually and around 1,000 people would get job opportunities,” the finance minister said.

The government would be earning Rs 4.5 crore as annual lease rental and Rs 3.5-4 crore as luxury tax from these hotels.

A crafts and ayurveda village, too, are under construction in the area, Dr Mitra added.
