WB CM lays foundation stone for IIIT, Kalyani

West Bengal Chief Minister Ms Mamata Banerjee today laid the foundation stone for the Indian Institute of Information Technology, Kalyani, (IIIT) near Buddha Park, Kalyani-Barrackpore Expressway, Kalyani, Nadia.

The West Bengal Chief Minister said that the State is setting up two Electronic Parks and 15 IT Parks.

The Chief Minister also said that six crore  people below poverty line will be distributed with rice@Rs 2/ kg besides the existing three crore people  totaling the number to nine crore people in the State, in this scheme.

The Government of West Bengal has granted 50 acres of land for the setting up of the campus.

State IT minister Dr Amit Mitra, panchayat & rural development minister Subrata Mukherjee and MPs Dr Tapas Mondal and Mamatabala Thakur were present on the occasion, besides other distinguished guests.

The West Bengal Chief Minister on her social media wrote:

” Today, I laid the foundation stone of the first ever Indian Institute of Information Technology (IIIT) of our State at Kalyani, Nadia. It is indeed a proud moment for all of us.

Our State is committed to work for advancement of IT-based products and services like Business Process Outsourcing (BPO), Knowledge Process Outsourcing (KPO), knowledge-based export, animation and in so many areas.

The IIIT will provide significant boost to nurture talent of our State and create more qualified and technically skilled manpower for tomorrow.

Besides IIIT, Kalyani will also have an AIIMS and Institute of Public Health which will turn Kalyani into a seat of advanced learning in Bengal.

WB CM writes to Centre to help potato farmers of the state

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has written to finance minister Arun Jaitley recently to rescue the potato farmers of the state suffering due to a bumper crop this season.

Listing the number of steps already taken by the Bengal government to ensure that the record 1 lakh, 20 thousand metric tonne yield fetches a fair price, WB CM has urged the Centre to take some specific measures that the Centre can take to bail out the farmers.

Concrete steps by State

In her second letter to Jaitley, after one she wrote on April 9, CM said that the state government has taken steps like, directly procuring potato from farmers for supplying to ICDS and midday meal beneficiaries, providing transport subsidy for inter-state movement of potato by the railways, subsidy for exporting potato from the Calcutta port.

In the letter, the CM has asked the finance minister to waive loans taken by potato farmers and also allow fresh loans for the kharif crop.

Letter against curtailing rural dev funds

WB CM has also written a letter to the Centre, opposing any move to reduce funds already sanctioned for rural development projects.

“Recently, the Union government has given us a letter informing about curtailment of funds for a number of rural development schemes, like the Backward Regions Grants Fund and the Rajiv Gandhi Panchayat Sashaktikaran Abhijan fund meant for strengthening panchayat infrastructure,” Panchayat and Rural Development Minister Subrata Mukherjee said. “I shall visit Delhi to talk to the Centre on this issue.”

Trinamool Congress raises demand to extend polling time to 5 PM for municipal elections

A delegation team of Trinamool Congress met the State Election Commission regarding the forthcoming Municipal Election. Senior leader Subrata Mukherjee addressed the press after the meeting.

Trinamool Congress raised the demand to extend the polling time from 3 PM to till 5 PM.

Subrata Mukherjee said, “This issue is related to the right of the people to vote.”

Water for all: Bengal shows the way

Public Health Engineering Department has been working towards the commitment of providing clean drinking water to every block in West Bengal.

A ‘Vision 2020’ document has been formulated which involves step for the medium term and the long term with a budget of Rs 1295 crore and Rs 21,285 crore respectively.

Here are the few key highlights in efforts of providing clean drinking water for all:

  • 428 numbers of piped water projects has been sanctioned, which is estimated to benefit around 1.25 crore people ( 2011 census data).
  • More than 41 thousand hand pumps installed.
  • The coverage of piped water has increased from 37.95% to 44.11%.
  • For arsenic purification, 349 projects have been undertaken. Out of which 212 have already started. More than 28 lakh people will benefit from this.
  • A “International Centre for Water Quality” is proposed to come up at Joka, Kolkata. This will be the first in the kind in India.
  • 7 bottling plants have already started and 15 on the move purification machines have started.

 

Significant Projects:

  • Jangalmahal : Around 50 projects of piped water has been undertaken in the backward areas of Jangalmahal, out of which 39 has already been commissioned. It involves an expenditure of Rs 141 crores and will benefit more than 3 lakh people.
  • In Bankura under the BRGF (Backward Region Grant Fund) a project has been undertaken with a cost of 1011 crore which will benefit 30 lakh people. A project for Purulia is also undertaken with assistance from JICA worth Rs 1173 crore, which will benefit 15 lakh people.
  • Major projects are underway in Kulpi, Panskura, Habra, Gaighata, Bally and others.

 

Achievements in Kolkata:

  • 95% of the area in Kolkata, under KMC is now supplied with clean drinking water.
  • The project of laying of 64’’ diameter Transmission Main from Palta to Tallah, with a cost of Rs 326 crores, has been completed and it has benefited around 20 lakh citizens of Kolkata.
  • Construction of 15 MGD Water treatment plant at Garden Reach and Chetla Booster Pumping Station has finished. These projects will benefit around 2.5 lakh residents of Behala, Chetla and parts of South Kolkata.
  • Construction of Intake Jetty and Pump House at ‘Mayer Ghat’ along with 30 MGD capacity “Jai Hind” project at Dhapa and its distribution network has been completed with a cost of around Rs 400 crore. This will benefit around 7 lakh residents of Kolkata.

Trinamool forms committees for upcoming municipal polls

Trinamool Chairperson Ms Mamata Banerjee presided over a meeting of the extended Core Committee today, where Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha MPs were also present. After the meeting Partha Chatterjee, Secretary General and senior leader Subrata Mukherjee addressed the press at the Kalighat office.

Partha Chatterjee said that a resolution was passed at today’s meeting to congratulate all the LS and RS MPs who are doing a commendable job in the Parliament. He said,” We will protest against the manner in which BJP Govt is targeting TMC in Rajya Sabha due to lack of majority. The Party will send a delegation led by Derek O’Brien to meet the Vice President on this issue. We will raise the issue of electoral reforms in Parliament.”

New committees have been formed for the upcoming municipal elections. The ongoing membership drive will be extended to every block level. A new booklet with facts will be published against the smear campaign of vested interest groups.

Subrata Mukherjee, senior leader, reiterated Trinamool’s commitment to preserve the secular nature of the land of Bengal. “We accept BJP’s challenge. We will not allow politics of communalism. We will give our lives instead. They are practicing the politics of forced conversions. We will counter them. Indian Constitution is a Secular Constitution. We will not tolerate communal politics.BJP is inciting politics of hate, violence and communalism in Bengal”, he said.

Alternative livelihood mission for villagers in Sagar Islands

State Panchayat and Rural Development Minister Mr Subrata Mukherjee has inaugurated a project of alternative livelihood for the people of most backward villages of Sagar Island.

Mr Mukherjee said a large number of people used to depend on hunting turtles, not only endangering those species but also risked their owned lives in doing so. People died of attacks by crocodiles and small sharks, he said.

Local people will be engaged in prawn and other fishes’ egg breeding units in several villages as alternative livelihood, he said.

Bharat Sevashram Sangha (BSS) has taken up initiative for providing all arrangements to set up the infrastructure for prawn and other fishes’ egg breeding units. Villagers from Mahendraganj, Nagendraganj, Khasramkar, Uttarharadhanpur, Kayalpara, Dhaspara, Krishnanagar and Chalkfuldubi, will join this project.

Swami Biswatmananda, general secretary of the BSS said that a 5000 square feet place has been identified for setting up a skill development centre for local people.

He said around 2700 people will be trained in fish breeding, in agriculture farming, making organic manure and handicrafts items.

Mr Mukherjee said that the state government will provide all kind of help to BSS if these projects are implemented in other villages.

No place for divisive politics in Bengal: Trinamool

Senior Trinamool leader Subrata Mukherjee today strongly condemned the divisive politics being practiced by a section of people in Bengal. At a press conference at Trinamool Bhavan, he said, “Bengal does not discriminate among people on the basis of caste, creed or religion.”

He added, “When millions of people came across the border in 1971 we gave them shelter. This is the greatness of Bengal. We abhor the politics of division. There is no place for even parochialism in Bengal.”

Terming the rally by Vishwa Hindu Parishad at Shahid Minar a “Black Day” for Bengal, he said “Shahid Minar has a heritage. Never before has a dangabaaj rally been held there.”

Subrata Mukherjee, who is also the rural development minister, added, “We work for poor people. We do not discriminate between anyone on the basis of religion.”

He urged the people of Bengal to uphold the tradition of the State and reject the divisive politics and protect the cultural unity of Bengal.

Secretary General of the party, Partha Chatterjee told reporters, “CBI is being used as a political tool. Sportspersons protested against the manner in which Sports Minister was arrested. Protests will be held in every district against the politics of vendetta.”
