Sabuj Sathi – Bengal Govt’s new scheme for students

During one of her district tours, a young boy had asked West Bengal Chief Mamata Banerjee: “I study in school; if girls can get bicycles for travelling to schools, why can’t boys?”

This had planted a seed in her head. The thought has at last led to a happy conclusion: ‘Sabuj Sathi’ – a project wherein all school-going children in West Bengal are going to be gifted bicycles by the State Government. The Finance Department has already sanctioned the money; the distribution via schools is going to start soon.

This beautiful name for the project came to the Chief Minister’s mind while on her way from Darjeeling to Bagdogra Airport. The rain-drenched sylvan mountains piqued her creativity; she began penning poems for children. Thus was born the name ‘Sabuj Sathi’ – ‘Sabuj’, the word for ‘green’ also implies ‘children’ in Bengali, and ‘sathi’ means ‘companion’, hence ‘Sabuj Sathi’ or ‘children’s companion.’ The Chief Minister has created the logo for the project as well. It consists of a young boy running, with two spinning bicycle wheels alongside his legs.

One of the landmark schemes of the Trinamool Congress Government, led by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, has been that of distributing bicycles to girl students, so that they can travel safely. Now distributing bicycles is going to be extended to all students, marking another high in the State Government’s constant efforts towards improving the state of education.

Bengal taking steps to improve the quality of mid-day meals for school students

The West Bengal Government is taking steps to improve the quality of Mid-Day Meal (MDM) provided to the school students.

Replying to a debate in support of the budgetary grant for his department, state’s School Education Minister Dr Partha Chatterjee said the Government was taking steps to check the quality of rice used by engaging officials of the food and supplies department.

Once the food was cooked, it would be tasted and checked by the cook and a teacher after which it will be offered to the students, he said, adding the chefs will also be trained in cooking and hygiene.

Dr Chatterjee said his department was setting up 969 dining halls at a cost of Rs 29 crore for students across the state. The utensils in which the food was served and cooked will also be changed for which a proposal has been sent to the Finance ministry for approval of funds.

Incidentally, in 2014, West Bengal secured 3rd rank among the states in implementing the midday meal scheme in schools across the state.

97% of the students enrolled in various schools in West Bengal are the beneficiaries of the scheme, a Central government report revealed, which comes to a whooping 1,22,98,419 students in all. According to a similar survey done in 2010-11, West Bengal was at the 12th position.

Mamata Banerjee’s 3 D mantra for success: Dedication, Devotion, Determination

Trinamool Congress Chairperson Ms Mamata Banerjee today addressed the young party activists belonging to Trinamool Chhatra Parishad at a workshop held at Netaji Indoor Stadium, Kolkata.

The Chairperson asked students not to be depressed or upset and follow the 3 D’s for success: Dedication, Devotion, Determination. She said the huge turnout for the workshop today was an inspiration for her.

Class Representatives (CR) owing allegiance to Trinamool Congress Chhatra Parishad in different colleges across the State took part in this programme to take guidance from the senior leadership of the party.

Speaking on the occasion, the Chairperson was immersed in nostalgia. “I feel proud to say my initiation in politics was with student activism. Our political career started from grassroots,” she said. She urged students to work for the people and always be by their side.

Criticising a section of the media for hyping small incidents, she said people have not forgotten the horrors of CPM rule in Netai, Khejuri, Nandigram or Keshpur. “We have to defeat CPM-BJP-Congress in the Assembly Elections,” she told the TMCP activists.

She made it clear their ideology was supreme in Trinamool. “We withdrew support to the Centre when their policies became anti-people,” she added. She also said that a database of TMCP activists in Bengal would be built.

Speaking of the development in Bengal in the last four years, the Chairperson said her government had set up 13 colleges in the last four years while Left Front set up only two in 34 years. “There were 31 colleges in Bengal till 2011. In four years we have set up 45 new colleges. There were only 1300 medical seats in Bengal till 2011. We have taken the number up to 2700 in just four years,” she added.

She also highlighted the success of Kanyashree while promising that 40 lakh girl students would receive cycles in the coming months. She also took pride in the fact that treatment for cancer, cardiac ailments and Thalassemia is free in the State.
