WB Govt preparing plan to harvest rainwater in New Town

The West Bengal Public Health Engineering (PHE) Department is preparing a concept plan within the month on how rainwater harvesting could lead to optimum utilization of water at commercial complexes in New Town, such as Eco Park, parks, and even in community toilets.

After the PHE department drafts the plan, the Hidco authorities will hold a discussion, involving engineers, planners and experts, to finalize the next course of action.

The entire New Town has a network of box drains to drain off rainwater from roads. This water then flows into a canal, such as the link canal or `pass khal’ in Action Area I. A drainage pumping station then pumps out the water from there to Bagjola canal, which runs through the township. The Hidco authorities are now exploring if instead of siphoning off the rainwater from the roads into Bagjola, the pumping station could drain it into the water treatment plant at Tarulia.

It is already planned that water from the Hooghly will be sent to the Tarulia plant through 6-ft pipes for treatment and then supplied across Salt Lake and New Town for consumption. The authorities hope the rainwater, drained from the New Town roads, could also be treated at the Tarulia plant and diverted back to the township to be used at the commercial complexes. The authorities are also exploring if the rainwater could be treated and purified at the 100-MGD plant so that it could be used as potable water.

A number of sewage treatment pumps at various points of New Town flush out waste water and after being treated, it is pumped into the nearby bheries and canals. The authorities are also examining the possibility of treating this water, running it through a second stage of purification, so that it can be used for gardening, washing and flushing at commercial and public establishments.

Hidco officials pointed out the model could also be used in other proposed smart cities, Salt Lake, Durgapur and Haldia.

TMC sweeps civic polls, victory of development over disruptive politics says party

The victories reiterate the Trinamool Congress’ continuing hold over urban electorate. The state goes for the assembly elections middle of 2016.

Final Tally:

Bidhannagar – 62%

WB Govt’s “Roof-top Solar Scheme” to take off in Saltlake, Rajarhat

The West Bengal Government is taking up measures to popularize solar energy and will start a “Roof-top Solar Scheme” initially for Bidhannagar, Rajarhat and Madhyamgram.

The Government is also requesting to use solar energy for small shops or small businesses. Recently a Solar Advisory Committee has also been formed to supervise the works.

Initially some of the blocks in Saltlake, the whole of Rajarhat and some of the places in Madhyamgram will have the buildings fitted with solar panels.

Also, in a bid to develop Rajarhat New Town as a green and smart city, the Housing Infrastructure Development Corporation (Hidco) will set new utility buildings in the township that will be developed as green buildings.

The new buildings will be set up following specifications recommended by the green building technical committee of the state urban development department. Two utility buildings have already been constructed in the township. Each of the new buildings will have an area of 1,500 square metres.

Among the recommendations the green building technical panel has made are use of two glass panes, with a layer of 6 mm air in between to ensure good insulation, use of autoclaved aerated concrete bricks that will help keep the interior cool, having a dual plumbing system with the facility of water re-use, having more open space than the minimum allowed under building laws and use of LED fixtures, five-star rated electric appliances and solar panels.

Once set up, the two buildings will be the first green buildings developed beforehand with ready built-up space for accommodating government offices.

The objective of setting up these utility buildings with ready built-up space, according to officials, is to create infrastructure before demands start to pour in.

Bengal Govt plans to launch mono rail in New Town

The state government is planning to introduce mono rail in New Town and to connect it with Metro Rail to improve transport system in the city, said State Urban Development Minister Firhad Hakim.

The minister said this while announcing that Kolkata has joined the league of “C40 Cities Climate Leadership Group”, which is a global network of cities tackling climate change and driving urban action that reduces both green house gas emission and climate risks.

He said that this was a huge opportunity for the city and would open new avenues for Kolkata to develop it as a modern city.

He added that since this was a huge opportunity to interact with experts from other global cities to upgrade civic facilities, the state government would focus more on upgrading the city’s transport system.

“The state government is keen to revive the entire transport system. As part of this initiative we are planning to introduce mono rail in Salta Lake Sector-V and New Town. The idea is to connect the mono rail with the Metro Rail so that people can enjoy a world class transport system,” the minister said.

“The planning is there and we are in the process of implementing the project. We have to wait a little bit as the population of New Town is yet to achieve its potential. For the survival of such projects there needs to be enough users,” Firhad Hakim added.

HIDCO to develop Eco Village in Rajarhat

After Eco Park, now Eco Village, a replica of reality. Those who do not have the opportunity of visiting rural Bengal will be able to experience how an ideal village is – Mud houses, naturally, without AC, ponds with fish in them and which you can fish as well. You can even cook the fish you catch at the new facility.

Here you will be able to go out for fishing, bird-watching or boating, you will also be able to see and taste the dishes of native Bengal.

As souvenirs you will be able to purchase handicrafts. Just as the Maidan acts as the lungs of Kolkata, Eco Park is the same for New Town. Eco Village will be an added oxygen supplier to those lungs”.

Prime location

A broad road stretches from the middle of gates 2 and 3 of the Eco Park starting from the Biswa Bangla Sarani till the end of Action Area 2, various apartments are located here. Opposite that, a huge plot of land has been identified beside Nababpur and Famerhati villages.

Eco Village is being developed around a water-body. Except for the washrooms, nothing else will be made of concrete here. The ducks will be introduced in the pond and various flowering plants and fruits will be grown on its sides.

Tourist attractions

A bird-watching tower is also a part of the plans, apart from the local birds, various migratory birds will be seen here. Open bill bird from Indonesia comes here.

Huts will be made available for resting in the afternoon. People can get a feel of Santiniketan or Darjeeling. Apart from that, village experience from North and South India will be available. Kids will also get a park in this facility.

When seen from the sky, the village will be in the shape of the English alphabet ‘B’. HIDCO has already begun their work as per the schedule.

Bengal to woo IT cos at Analytics City

Keeping up with its smart city initiatives, the state government is now working on plans to develop an `Analytics City’ near Kolkata to woo reputable IT firms dealing in data analysis. It will have the infrastructure of a smart city with residential and commercial complexes and other facilities.

The proposal of developing such a theme-based city was earlier mooted by the Bengal Chamber of Commerce and Industry (BCCI). Discussions have been held with state urban development officials on the proposal.

The state government is already working on plans to develop a number of ‘theme-based’ townships and cities. Places like Bolpur, Kalyani, Asansol, Dumurjala, Baruipur and Debgram has been identified for such theme-based townships and a number of real estate developers have also shown interest to build these theme cities.

Besides, the state government is also working on plans to develop smart cities, keeping New Town, where a number of initiatives have already been taken, on top of the list.
