Trinamool campaign reaches peak for municipal polls

Trinamool Congress is focused on connecting with people in the last stage of the Municipal Polls campaigning from Bidhannagar to Bali.

In Bidhannagar-Rajarhat, Trinamool MP Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar addressed a rally at Ward No 41 while in Ward No 31, a road show was organised. In Ward No 20, door-to-door campaign reached its peak. State Ministers, Firhad Hakim, Bratya Basu and Assembly Chief Whip Shovandeb Chatterjee were the major campaigners for the day.

In Bali, a campaign was led by State Minister Aroop Roy and popular actor Soham. Road shows were organised in different parts of Bali and Liluah.

In Siliguri, a huge mass rally in support of the Trinamool candidates in the SMP election was addressed by MP Suvendu Adhikari and Trinamool Secretary General Partha Chatterjee at Matigara Patharghata.

In Asansol, the star campaigners for the day were MP Moonmoon Sen and State Minister Aroop Biswas, who held rallies in many places including Jamuria.

Trinamool observes Dhikkar Diwas against politics of violence by CPM

Trinamool Congress organised protest rallies to mark Dikkar Diwas throughout the State to counter the violence being caused by the Left parties.

On Thursday, the Dikkhar Diwas was organised at block level. Another rally will be organised in Kolkata on September 4, led by Sovan Chatterjee.

AITC Secretary General Partha Chatterjee, while informing about the Dikkar Diwas programme on Wednesday evening said that the people of Bengal do not Bandhs or political violence. CPI(I)M is taking on to such violence to keep their existence alive.

To mark protest against this Trinamool Congress has taken up the programme of Dikkar Diwas and Trinamool activists will carry black flags as a mark of protest, he said.

Incidentally, West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Chairperson Ms Mamata Banerjee  while slamming the bandh culture, said that those who destroyed the infrastructure and economy of the State for 34 years have to right to terrorise people with culture of violence and hooliganism.

WB CM forms 9-member committee to free land of closed industrial units

The Mamata Banerjee government has formed a group of ministers (GoM) to find out ways to free land of closed industrial units in areas near Calcutta so that fresh investments can be invited.

“The nine-member GoM will look into different aspects of the closed industries in the state. But the primary objective will be to free land of closed industrial units and invite fresh investments on the prime plots,” a minister told reporters.

Senior officials said the chief minister was trying to pave the way for new industries before the Assembly elections next year as she could face questions on the lack of investments in Bengal.

The committee would include Dr Amit Mitra (Finance & Industries), Firhad Hakim (Urban Development), Partha Chatterjee (Education), Chandrima Bhattacharya (Law), Manish Gupta (Power), Subrata Mukherjee (Panchayat), Malay Ghatak (Labour), Purnendu Bose (Agriculture) and Sudarshan Ghosh Dastidar (Environment).

The government had recently freed nearly 200 acres in Nadia’s Kalyani from 11 closed units.

The incident at Calcutta University (CU) was uncalled for. I have spoken to all sides and heard their views. Having done that, the VC is now examining details of the incident.

Let me reiterate, the larger issue is about weeding out corruption in CU. Corruption and education can never go together.

My earnest appeal to ALL sides is to focus on education & look ahead.

Quality of education in Bengal has increased: Partha Chatterjee

A budget of Rs 2688.20 crore was passed in the West Bengal Assembly for the state’s Higher Education department today.

Moving the budget proposal, state Education Minister Partha Chatterjee said in the last two years, 65 colleges from the state have got ‘A’ or ‘B’ gradation from National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC), which showed that quality of education in the state has increased.

To fill up vacant posts in different state-run and aided colleges, recommendation for appointment of more than 1700 teachers have been made, he said.

The minister, however, added that all the recruitments would be made in accordance with UGC norms and that quality would not be compromised.

Chatterjee criticised the opposition members saying that it was not seeing the positives just for the sake of politics.

“They are displaying a lack of positive and constructive attitude,” he said.

Bengal taking steps to improve the quality of mid-day meals for school students

The West Bengal Government is taking steps to improve the quality of Mid-Day Meal (MDM) provided to the school students.

Replying to a debate in support of the budgetary grant for his department, state’s School Education Minister Dr Partha Chatterjee said the Government was taking steps to check the quality of rice used by engaging officials of the food and supplies department.

Once the food was cooked, it would be tasted and checked by the cook and a teacher after which it will be offered to the students, he said, adding the chefs will also be trained in cooking and hygiene.

Dr Chatterjee said his department was setting up 969 dining halls at a cost of Rs 29 crore for students across the state. The utensils in which the food was served and cooked will also be changed for which a proposal has been sent to the Finance ministry for approval of funds.

Incidentally, in 2014, West Bengal secured 3rd rank among the states in implementing the midday meal scheme in schools across the state.

97% of the students enrolled in various schools in West Bengal are the beneficiaries of the scheme, a Central government report revealed, which comes to a whooping 1,22,98,419 students in all. According to a similar survey done in 2010-11, West Bengal was at the 12th position.

Law and order in Bengal better than other states: Partha Chatterjee

West Bengal Education and Parliamentary Affairs Minister, Dr Partha Chatterjee today slammed Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh for his comments on the law and order situation in West Bengal.

Partha Chatterjee said, “Rajnath Singh Ji spoke like a party leader and not a Central Minister. Was he trying to please his party workers?” He also added, “Law and order situation in Bengal is far better than other states.”

The minister also took Rajnath Singh Ji to task for his comments on Teesta water sharing treaty, describing it as “uncalled for”. “He should not have spoken about Teesta water sharing treaty without consulting State government,” said Partha Chatterjee while addressing reporters at the State Assembly.

We thank people of Bengal for foiling bandh culture: Partha Chatterjee

Secretary General of All India Trinamool Congress today thanked the people of West Bengal for foining the bandh called by Opposition parties. He said that the joint-production of the Opposition and a few media houses was rejected by the people.

“People stepped out of their homes, went to home. Universities conducted exams. Life was normal today. You cannot win hearts of people by calling bandhs. They are counter-productive, anti-progress,” he said.

Maintaining that the Opposition has no organisational strength, neither do they have the support of people, Partha Chatterjee thanked the administration for maintaining normalcy of life.

Left parties calling bandh when one should be beside the earthquake affected: Partha Chatterjee

Trinamool Secretary General Partha Chatterjee urged all the people of the State to oppose the bandh called by the Left parties on 30 April, 2015, during a press conference at Trinamool Bhavan.

Highlights of his address:

• More than 2000 people are dead due to earthquake in Nepal. West Bengal Chief Minister Ms Mamata Banerjee has rushed to north Bengal to be beside those affected and take stock of the rescue operation.

• We believe in being beside people at the time of distress. The Left parties, in this critical time, have called a bandh.

• We oppose the strike. We do not believe in bandhs. We urge all to protest against the bandh by keeping everything running.

• West Bengal is one of the main points to reach Nepal. A strike in Bengal will affect rescue works.

• We condemn the bandh. When people should be beside the distressed, bandh has been called. We urge all to oppose the bandh.

Municipal elections 2015: Trinamool’s massive campaign across Bengal
