Sudip Bandyopadhyay bats for tolerance in Lok Sabha

Speaking in Lok Sabha during a special sitting to commemorate the 125th birth anniversary of Dr BR Ambedkar, the leader of the party in Lok Sabha, Sudip Bandyopadhyay today asked the Prime Minister to rise to the occasion and act against the incidents of intolerance in the country.

“Every citizen have the right to practice their own religion. Few incidents are sending out a negative image of the country,” he said.

The Kolkata Uttar MP added, “People like Shahrukh Khan, Aamir Khan, A R Rahman, Mithun Chakraborty are feeling unsafe in their own country. We must find the cause.”

“This is the country of Sri Sri Ramakrishna Paramhansa Deb and Swami Vivekananda. We must show tolerance. Sri Sri Ramakrishna Paramhansa said ‘Joto Mot, Toto Poth’ (As Many Opinions, That Many Ways). We must respect this spirit,” said Sudip Banerjee.

He also showered praises on Dr BR Ambedkar, the chief architect of our Constitution who was elected to the Constituent Assembly from Bengal. He said Ambedkar was a revivor of Buddhism in India and a social engineer.

We should unequivocally lodge our protests from the Parliament against the incidents of intolerance, Sudip Bandyopadhyay advised the Prime Minister while concluding his speech.

Trinamool wants Parliament to function: Sudip Bandopadhyay

Ahead of the Winter Session this week, Trinamool Congress on Saturday said it does not favour disrupting of Parliament proceedings and will raise issues of intolerance, communal harmony and strengthening of federal structure in the House.

“The strategy of our party is yet to be decided. It will be decided after discussions with our party chief Mamata Banerjee. But yes, we want the Parliament to function properly. We don’t want any disruption of the house,” TMC Parliamentary Party leader in Lok Sabha Sudip Bandopadhyay said.

“If Parliament functions smoothly, we will be able to raise the burning issues of the country such as price rise, intolerance, threat to secularism and others. We can make the government answerable for these issues,” he said.

Sudip Bandopadhyay said, “The issue of intolerance and threat to communal harmony will top our agenda.”

“Never before has India gone through such an intolerant atmosphere. We want to raise this issue of intolerance in the Parliament. We have always spoken in favour of strengthening communal harmony of our country. In the present situation the communal harmony too is under threat,” he added.

The MP also lashed out at the Centre for interfering in the federal structure of the country.

“We have always spoken in favour of strengthening the federal structure and for more powers to the states. But under the present regime at the centre, the Prime Minister is calling up chief secretaries of the state bypassing the chief ministers.

“Is this the way you protect the federal structure, which is the basis of our country? We all need to strengthen the federal structure,” he added.

Dinesh Trivedi speaks in Lok Sabha on the Adjournment Motion | Full Transcript

Madam, I thank you very much for giving me this opportunity. This is a temple of democracy, and this temple of democracy, as far as we are concerned in TMC, is perhaps much higher that all the temples which we go to.

Madam iis mandir me charcha ka koi vikalp nahi hain. I have no doubt that all of us would share this sentiment and you have tried your best also. I personally feel that whenever it comes to corruption, Trinamool Congress and our leader Mamata Banerjee have always been found to be fighting that.

There is no question of ‘this side versus that side’, lot of us are very senior members of Parliament, and today, I can tell you that I am also pained as most of us would have been. I have been a Member of Parliament from Rajya Sabha and from here from 1990. I have never seen this kind of acrimony, and I hope and pray that this would be perhaps the last.

Why do I say this? I say this because these issues are very important. The entire country and perhaps the entire world is looking at India because we are very proud of our freedom, we are very proud of our democracy. The world is looking at India because India has taken the lead in the world’s stability.

My colleague and our parliamentary party leader Sudip Bandyopadhyay, in the All-Party Meeting very kindly called by you several times to make sure that we get out of this impasse, suggested to please accept the motion and go ahead with the debate. But unfortunately that did not happen. Madam there is another issue of Vyapam. Sudip Bandyopadyay had also given notices of adjournment on that. The issue is equally serious and people also want certain clarification.

Madam I do not think that I need to really go in further because a lot of things have already been spoken about. I do not think we have anything of add to whatever has been spoken but yes in conclusion I will tell you that this is the highest temple and in a democracy there cannot be anything higher than this august House and the Rajya Sabha.

Madam we do not live by legality alone, we live by the perception of the people of the country also. And we have got to be equally concerned about what is the perception, what is the propriety. I don’t think so it would be fair for me to say that we sit on somebody’s judgment. The biggest court for us is the people of India.

But it is equally important that the matters which are seen by the country, we debate like we perhaps are debating now with a very calm and silent state of affairs. I just hope and pray that in future we will have debates which are also such that people of this country want to listen.

Thank you very much for having given me the opportunity.

WB CM visits Parliament, meets the President at Delhi

West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress Chairperson Ms Mamata Banerjee visited the Parliament today during her trip to Delhi. She went to the newly allotted room that was given to the party after demands being made for years.

She had a meeting with the party MPs at the new room which has been now decorated with picture painted by artiste and MP Jogen Chowdhury.

The Trinamool Chairperson met the heads and leaders of different polical parties including Congress, NCP, JD(U)  and AAP, while some of the leaders called on the Trinamool Chairperson at the party’s new room in Parliament.

The West Bengal Chief Minister paid a courtesy visit to the President of India at the Rashtrapati Bhavan and wished a speedy recovery of the ailing First Lady.

At night, the West Bengal CM hosted a dinner for Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal at her Delhi residence, where a meeting was also held.

Trinamool to organise mock parliament session on Teachers’ Day

The Trinamool Congress will organise a mock session of Parliament to discuss various important issues which could not be discussed during the current Monsoon session.

“Trinamool to conduct mock session of Parliament on Teachers’ Day at Constitution Club, New Delhi. All LS and RS MPs to attend session,” the party said in a statement.

“All important issues which could not be discussed in this session of Parliament will be taken up in the unique mock Parliament session,” the statement added.

The TMC parliamentary party’s decision to conduct the mock session came when party supremo Mamata Banerjee was in Delhi to meet the Prime Minister.

No work no pay: TMC sets an example in Parliament

Trinamool once again proved that it is a responsible Opposition party which believes in democratic values and principles.

While the party had earlier decided to boycott the Lok Sabha for 5 days, after the suspension of 25 Lok Sabha MPs, “for the greater interest of Parliamentary democracy”, Trinamool MPs did not sign the register in Parliament and have foregone their salaries for the five days, too.

Leader of the party in Lok Sabha, Sudip Bandyopadhyay, said, “We are opposed to the suspension of 25 Lok Sabha MPs. We are not attending Lok Sabha for five days for the greater interest of Parliamentary democracy.”

Trinamool writes to the Rashtrapati on National Anthem

Trinamool Congress has written a letter to the President on India demanding the dismissal of the Rajasthan Governor for showing disrespect to the National Anthem of India.

Trinamool Congress MP and Deputy Leader in Rajya Sabha, Sukhendu Sekhar Roy has written to President Pranab Mukherjee against the Rajasthan Governor’s statement that had demanded the word “adhinayak“ be removed from the national anthem as he said that it was used by composer Rabindranath Tagore “to appease the British”.

The Trinamool Congress MP pointed out the governor’s statement violated the Constitution that he is supposed to uphold. Trinamool plans to take up the issue in the monsoon session of Parliament.

In his letter, the Trinamool Congress MP said that the Governor holds a constitutional post and according to the Article 159 of the Constitution, he is bound to preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of India. The Article 51 (A) of the Constitution says to abide by the Constitution and respect its ideals and institutions, the national Flag and the National Anthem. The Rajasthan Governor has violated both the Articles. Mr Roy said.

In his letter to the President, Mr Roy said: “It is common knowledge that a hate campaign was orchestrated by vested interested groups against the song `Jana Gana Mana‘ since 1911 when it was first written and poet Rabindranath Tagore had to explain the meaning and purport of the song by writing letters articles in Bengali periodicals like Bichitra on 20.11.1937 and Purbasha on 29.2.1939.”

Mr Roy recalled that Mahatma Gandhi, however, had paid rich tributes to the song in `Harijan’ magazine on May 19, 1946, saying it was not only an anthem but a prayer song of the nation.

The matter was informed to the party Chairperson Ms Mamata Banerjee and on her instruction, a letter was sent to the President. Acopy of the letter was also sent to the Union Home Minister.

In Delhi, Trinamool Congress Parliamentary Party Leader in Rajya Sabha and Chief National Spokesperson of the party Derek O’Brien has held a press conference in this issue and it was decided that the matter will be raised in the Monsoon session of the Parliament.
