WB Govt to set up organic market in New Town’s Eco Park

In order to make fresh and non-toxic food items available to residents, the West Bengal Agricultural Marketing department is going to set up an organic market. The market will be established in one of the most popular places near Kolkata, the Eco Park in New Town.

An 18 cottah plot beside the township’s major arterial road was allotted by Hidco to the State Agricultural Marketing department for setting up an organic market in New Town. The market will be large since the size of the land allotted is huge.

The market will be set up at Eco Park in New Town, near the park’s gate number 4. Various products such as vegetables, rice, dal, tea, spices and other edible products, all organically grown, will be sold at this market. The state government’s idea is to reach out to people with these healthy food items. Only government approved quality organic food, grown by farmers across the State, will be sold at this particular market, therefore they will be healthy. Organic manure and organic pesticides are only used to make these products and no chemical pesticides are used.

The idea has been floated and approved as a pilot project. The project is expected to be completed in more than one year.

Eco Park, WB CM’s brainchild, wins top urban landscape honour

The central Housing and Urban Development Corporation (HUDCO) has voted Eco Park at New Town as one of the top two projects in the country for innovative planning and design, bringing new accolades for the city in urban landscaping.

The project, developed by West Bengal Housing Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (HIDCO), has won the second position under the ‘Landscape Planning and Design’ category.

Off the arterial road in New Town, Eco Park is spread over 480 acres, a 104-acre water body in its middle. On July 19, 2011, on her way from airport, Mamata Banerjee reportedly alighted from her car as the water body caught her attention. On her instruction, the HIDCO converted the area into an ecological garden.

New attractions, such as the Biswa Bangla Haat, a children’s play area, a butterfly garden, a musical fountain, a bamboo garden, a replica of the Ghum station and an adda zone, were added.

‘Smart Anandababu’ – Icon of smart city project

The smart city initiatives of New Town and Salt Lake have already grabbed the attention of mayors from some countries. The New Town Kolkata Development Authority (NKDA) is now planning to follow the ‘Buladi’ route to reach out to residents of New Town to have a direct interface with the citizens in a smart way.

Similar to the state’s counter-AIDS icon, the authorities are planning ‘Smart Anandababu’ who will always be there to listen, give details and refer it to the relevant section through a web-based software at the back-end and give feedback to the concerned residents.

Officials said that resolving citizen’s grievances is one of the main focus areas of the smart city strategy. While many are talking of online web portals, complaint monitoring software and GISbased photo shoots through smartphone applications, officials said that the interaction needs to have a human face, a person people can relate to and hence the ‘ Anandababu’ ídea has been conceptualised.

To make the system more effective, the person on the other side of telephone will be backed up with a control room that will provide time bound results on the actions being taken by giving sms based feedback to the complainant on his or her mobile phone.

The authorities are also holding ‘Smart Fridays’ where interactions are taking place with citizens of the township to discuss on the smart city initiatives.

Bengal Govt plans to launch mono rail in New Town

The state government is planning to introduce mono rail in New Town and to connect it with Metro Rail to improve transport system in the city, said State Urban Development Minister Firhad Hakim.

The minister said this while announcing that Kolkata has joined the league of “C40 Cities Climate Leadership Group”, which is a global network of cities tackling climate change and driving urban action that reduces both green house gas emission and climate risks.

He said that this was a huge opportunity for the city and would open new avenues for Kolkata to develop it as a modern city.

He added that since this was a huge opportunity to interact with experts from other global cities to upgrade civic facilities, the state government would focus more on upgrading the city’s transport system.

“The state government is keen to revive the entire transport system. As part of this initiative we are planning to introduce mono rail in Salta Lake Sector-V and New Town. The idea is to connect the mono rail with the Metro Rail so that people can enjoy a world class transport system,” the minister said.

“The planning is there and we are in the process of implementing the project. We have to wait a little bit as the population of New Town is yet to achieve its potential. For the survival of such projects there needs to be enough users,” Firhad Hakim added.
