Rejaul Hossain Islam, a student hailing from a farmer family has taken Mamata Banerjee’s life and struggle as the subject of his Ph.D. His topic is  ‘Charisma of Mass Leader Mamata and her Leadership’.

Rejaul will be pursuing his Ph.D. from Vidyasagar University under a guide.

Rejaul, a management student was born in Hatipota village in the Kalna block. His father is a farmer and his brother helped him to complete his MBA by supporting his brother’s education.

Reajul, who spoke exclusively to Trinamool Digital Media team, said that the research on Didi was his childhood dream. ” I am a management student. I have seen Singur and Nandigram movements. I have seen her management charisma. These are the things that inspired me,” he said.

Rejaul has now started getting stipend as a Maulana Abul Kalam Junior Research Fellow.

In an article published on Ei Samay, dated September 23, 2015, Rejaul said, his choice has been not a big issue as he had seen the movements made by Mamata Banerjee in his early student days.

“This is not the first time that a student of history or politics has shown interest in Mamata Banerjee’s struggle to end communist rule in Bengal. I’ve had the privilege of sharing her story with the students of Yale University and Columbia University in the US”, said the Trinamool National Spokesperson and Leader of the Rajya Sabha, Derek O’Brien.

Congress didn’t give a penny to Bengal when it was in power at Centre: Abhishek Banerjee

Trinamool Youth Congress President Abhishek Banerjee today slammed the Congress in a press conference at Trinamool Bhavan.

“Congress was in power at Centre till 2014. They did not help West Bengal with even a penny,” he said. Abhishek Banerjee added that when Mamata Banerjee was leading a people’s movement in Singur and Nandigram, no one came forward to support her.

“No party was there with Mamata Banerjee during Singur-Nandigram movement. No one came forward.”

He also slammed the Opposition for their constant slander against Trinamool led West Bengal Government. “Nothing happened in Bengal for 34 years. Now the Opposition is saying no work is being done,” he said.

CBI takes up cases which suit it politically: Mamata Banerjee

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday alleged that Central Bureau of Investigation takes up cases which “suits it politically” and does not show interest in others.

The Chief Minister told the State Assembly that earlier she had the “penchant for seeking a CBI probe into incidents” but it was changing now.

She said she had referred 14 cases to the central agency but it did not take up those. From the Tapasi Malik case to killing of innocents in Nandigram, CBI has failed in all cases, she said.

“They do what suits them politically,” she said. The Chief Minister said her idea of CBI was changing and it was “only about marketing”.

It had also closed the case relating to theft of Nobel medal of Rabindranath Tagore as it failed to do anything, she added.

No compromise on land bill: Mamata Banerjee

There would be no compromise on the Centre’s land acquisition bill, West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Chairperson Mamata Banerjee said, reiterating her stand of not supporting the bill.

“Why should we support the land bill? Land bill, no compromise,” Ms Banerjee told reporters in Purulia.

“It is linked with soil. It is linked with our struggle,” she said. She was in Purulia for attending an administrative review meeting to take stock of the developmental projects in the district.

“We have made our stand clear in Parliament. I sat on a hunger strike for 26 days against forcible land acquisition,” Mamata Banerjee had said.

“It was our movement against forcible land acquisition which had sparked the demand for abolition of the draconian Land Acquisition Act of 1894,” she stated.

Trinamool to hit the streets against land ordinance on April 8

Trinamool Congress under the leadership of Chairperson Mamata Banerjee will hit the streets on 8 April in Kolkata to protest against the draconian Land Bill.

The rally will start from Moulali at 4 PM and will march towards Gandhi statue on Mayo road. Similar rallies will be held at every district of West Bengal.

Partha Chatterjee, Secretary General of Trinamool Congress, said, “This is a black ordinance. We will wear black cloth and black badges to protest against this ordinance.”

Trinamool Congress has a long history of people’s movement for the right of farmers. The party has fought against forceful land acquisitions in Singur, Nandigram and other places of West Bengal. Mamata Banerjee went on a hunger strike for 26 days in 2006 for the farmers of Singur.

In 2013, when UPA II introduced the Land Acquisition Act, Trinamool was the only party that wanted a division and voted against the Bill in the floor of the Rajya Sabha.

Trinamool is committed in opposing the draconian Land Bill and will fight for the rights of the farmers.

Trinamool pays homage to martyrs of Nandigram Movement on Nandigram Divas

On the eighth anniversary of the Nandigram genocide that happened on 14 March 2007 Trinamool Congress paid homage to the martyrs of Nandigram Movement on Nandigram Divas.

Trinamool Secretary General Partha Chatterjee, MPs, Sisir Adhikari and Suvendu Adhikari, Firhad Hakim and other leaders paid tribute to the martyrs with floral wreaths on the Shahid Bedi at Bhangabera in Nandigram.

In 2007, on this very day, 14 innocent people, farmers and their families were killed and more than one hundred innocent villagers were injured by police firing while protesting against forced acquisition of multi-crop farm land by the then Left front Government.

The barbaric attitude of brutal massacre of innocent and helpless villagers, shown by the Left Government, can only be comparable with the Jalianwala Bagh Massacre.

The Nandigram Movement

The People’s Tribunal on Nandigram has called the violence of 14 March 2007 a ‘pre-planned, state-sponsored massacre’ carried out ‘to teach a lesson’ to people opposing the SEZ project on their land.

On January 2, 2007 farmers of Nandigram protested after getting a letter on land acquisition by the then West Bengal Government. Six people died in the clash and the farmers blocked the area earmarked for the SEZ. The movement gained momentum in the next two months that culminated in the killing of 14 poor farmers on March 14 in police firing.

Trinamool Chairperson Ms Mamata Banerjee rushed to the spot to meet the victims. She was assaulted and had to be hospitalized after being hit by a stone while on her way to areas affected by violence.

The brutal killings helped in mobilising the intellectual class of well-known writers, artists, poets and activists including, Mahasweta Devi, Aparna Sen and Medha Patkar against the forceful land acquisition.

The Left Government was forced to withdraw its plan to set up the chemical hub in Nandigram.

Present

After the Trinamool Government was established in Bengal, Chief Minister Ms Mamata Banerjee, announced a raft of development proposals, including an industrial cluster. An industrial cluster will be set up at Nayachar on 4500 acre to provide direct employment to 10,000 people and a tourism cluster of international standard on 268 acre which will boost the economy of the area, she announced.

The West Bengal Government has also declared 14 March as Krishak Divas to uphold the rights of farmers.

WB Govt to celebrate 14 March as Krishak Divas

The West Bengal Government has decided to celebrate 14 March as Krishak Divas.

On 14 March, 2007, 14 innocent farmers and their families were shot to death by the then Left Government after they protested against forced acquisition of their farm lands. The movement against forced land acquisition that started on 7 January 2007 in Nadigram took to Left Government-led  violent interference on 14 March. The peaceful movement was fired upon leading to the worst Government-sponsored massacre of innocent lives.

After Trinamool Government took over, West Bengal Chief Minister Ms Mamata Banerjee has taken numerous steps to ensure the rights of the farmers and achieved numerous developmental feats in agricultural sector. The State has also also been giving Krishak Ratna award to achieving farmers.

The Krishak Divas on 14 March will be observed at Nandigram. MP Suvendu Adhikari and State Ministers, Partha Chatterjee and Firhad Hakim are expected to be present on the occasion

Trinamool to symbolically burn Land Ordinance: MB

Trinamool Chairperson Ms Mamata Banerjee said that the party will protest against Center’s Land Acquisition Ordinance. The Central Govt. has forcefully brought this ordinance on land acquisition, she said. We will fight against the unjust ordinance on land acquisition, she said. She was speaking at a workers’ meeting in Kharagpur.

The Trinamool Chairperson instructed the workers that the party will protest against this ‘black’ Ordinance by burning symbolic copies of the Ordinance.

Background

The Central Government had just passed an ordinance making amendments to the Land Acquisition Act, 2013 as passed by UPA. The BJP Government has exempted 80-20% consent for land acquisition for following cases: Rural infrastructure, electrification, affordable housing for poor, Defence, industrial corridor, PPP projects where ownership of land remains with govt. Higher compensation for landlosers to continue.

Trinamool Congress’s stand on land acquisition is clear and the party is opposed to forceful acquisition from the poor farmers. But if acquisition of land is necessary by government organisations, it should be through discussion and sufficient compensation should be given to the farmers.

Trinamool Congress had fought against forceful land acquisition in historic people’s movements in Singur and Nandigram.
