Trinamool to hit the streets against land ordinance on April 8

Trinamool Congress under the leadership of Chairperson Mamata Banerjee will hit the streets on 8 April in Kolkata to protest against the draconian Land Bill.

The rally will start from Moulali at 4 PM and will march towards Gandhi statue on Mayo road. Similar rallies will be held at every district of West Bengal.

Partha Chatterjee, Secretary General of Trinamool Congress, said, “This is a black ordinance. We will wear black cloth and black badges to protest against this ordinance.”

Trinamool Congress has a long history of people’s movement for the right of farmers. The party has fought against forceful land acquisitions in Singur, Nandigram and other places of West Bengal. Mamata Banerjee went on a hunger strike for 26 days in 2006 for the farmers of Singur.

In 2013, when UPA II introduced the Land Acquisition Act, Trinamool was the only party that wanted a division and voted against the Bill in the floor of the Rajya Sabha.

Trinamool is committed in opposing the draconian Land Bill and will fight for the rights of the farmers.

Trinamool consistently opposed draconian Land Bill: Derek

Statement by Derek O’Brien, National Spokesperson and Chief Whip in Rajya Sabha:

We are glad that many parties are now coming around to oppose the Land Ordinance.

Trinamool has been consistent. We strongly opposed even the UPA 2 Land Bill and called for voting in RS. This one too is draconian.

Urban poor in Bengal to come under the purview of Nija Griha Nija Bhoomi scheme

After successfully implementing the Nija Griha Nija Bhoomi scheme for the poor people in rural Bengal, the West Bengal Government has taken the initiative to provide homes and land pattas for the poor people even in the urban areas of the State.

The decision was taken in a Cabinet meeting held at Nabanna on January 13, 2015.

Nija Griha Nija Bhoomi

Landless and homeless rural agricultural labourers, artisans and fishermen families who hold no other land in any capacity and the heirs of such persons, and residing on the land of other persons not having family relation (parental or maternal or in-laws) were earlier eligible for this scheme.

Through this project, BPL card holders in urban areas can now avail the Nija Griha Nija Bhoomi scheme. Ms Chandrima Bhattacharya, State Minister of Law, Judicial Affairs and Health, said that the state municipal affairs and urban development department will provide detailed guidelines regarding this and fix the criteria for the urban poor to get the benefits under this project.

Other Cabinet decisions

The State Cabinet also took a decision to revive State Dairy Durgapur Limited, which produces and markets dairy products.

It was also decided that 200 doctors will be recruited for ESI hospitals. The state government has taken the decision to increase the retirement age from 60 to 62 for ESI doctors.

Another decision was taken today during the state cabinet meeting to set up six new cyber crime police stations in West Bengal.

Trinamool to symbolically burn Land Ordinance: MB

Trinamool Chairperson Ms Mamata Banerjee said that the party will protest against Center’s Land Acquisition Ordinance. The Central Govt. has forcefully brought this ordinance on land acquisition, she said. We will fight against the unjust ordinance on land acquisition, she said. She was speaking at a workers’ meeting in Kharagpur.

The Trinamool Chairperson instructed the workers that the party will protest against this ‘black’ Ordinance by burning symbolic copies of the Ordinance.

Background

The Central Government had just passed an ordinance making amendments to the Land Acquisition Act, 2013 as passed by UPA. The BJP Government has exempted 80-20% consent for land acquisition for following cases: Rural infrastructure, electrification, affordable housing for poor, Defence, industrial corridor, PPP projects where ownership of land remains with govt. Higher compensation for landlosers to continue.

Trinamool Congress’s stand on land acquisition is clear and the party is opposed to forceful acquisition from the poor farmers. But if acquisition of land is necessary by government organisations, it should be through discussion and sufficient compensation should be given to the farmers.

Trinamool Congress had fought against forceful land acquisition in historic people’s movements in Singur and Nandigram.

Transcript of the speech of the Trinamool Chairperson at the Vidyasagar Industrial Park at Rupnarayanpur in Kharagpur:

  • There had been repeated disturbances in the state – Belpahari, Jamboni, Chamkaitala, now there is peace.
