Kolkata is set to get its longest flyover today when the Park Circus-Parama Island flyover will be inaugurated by West Bengal Chief Minister Ms Mamata Banerjee after her historic visit from Bhutan. The inauguration will take place at 12 Noon.
Longest flyover
It is the longest flyover of the state. Vehicles will start plying immediately. The flyover will ease traffic movement to and from the airport to a great extent.
While the main flyover is 4.3 km, the total length, including the flanks and the ramps, is more than 9 km. The flyover will allow one to reach EM Bypass from Howrah in a seamless movement across three flyovers, covering only 300 metres on the ground — near Park Circus Maidan — and 500 metres between the Police Training School and the second Hooghly bridge.
The ground distance will be reduced further once a flank connecting the Parama Island- Park Circus flyover with the AJC Bose Road flyover is finished. Work on this project will start immediately after October 9.
Route
The flyover will take off and also get down near the Park Circus seven-point crossing on its western end. On the eastern end, there is one flank near PC Chandra Garden for vehicles headed to and coming from the Ruby rotary, and another near The Spring Club.
Biswa Bangla
A revolving Biswa Bangla logo will also be inaugurated at the Science City crossing on the EM Bypass on Thursday. The revolving logo — a globe with the Bengali letter ‘ব’ on it — will rotate twice every minute. There will be fountains in three colours surrounding the 16ft-diameter globe. A 13.5metre pool has also been built around it.
