West Bengal Chief Minister Ms Mamata Banerjee paid homage to the leaders of the Santhal Revolution, the martyrs, Sidho, Kanhu and Birsa on the occasion of Hul Divas. She said that the State has set up a university in the name of the tribal heroes.
Hul Divas is commemorated to pay tribute to martyr brothers Sidho and Kanho in memory of their uprising against the British in 1855.
The West Bengal Government has taken up the cause of the tribal people in the State.The medium of instruction in 900 primary and 33 secondary schools in the tribal areas of West Midnapore, Bankura and Purulia are being made Santhali, books being printed in Alchiki, and scheme being made to create around 1,800 teaching jobs.
Today, the State Government is organising a programme at the Lok Sanskriti and Adivasi Sanskriti Kendra at Chhit Kalikapur in Kolkata. An exhibition on tribal culture will be showcased from today till July 6 at Gaganendra Pradarshanshala.
