WB CM visits flood affected areas of Howrah, takes stock of relief works

The West Bengal Government, headed by Chief Minister Ms Mamata Banerjee has been taking every required measures to provide relief after over 18 hours of continuous pounding by torrential rain that started on Friday evening inundated vast areas of 12 districts, almost all of them in south Bengal, marooning over 18 lakh people. Excess rain since the beginning of the monsoon season in mid-June had already left these districts facing a flood-like situation. The overnight rain, triggered by a deep depression, has aggravated the situation further.

The West Bengal Chief Minister, who had cut short her London trip to return to her flood-ravaged state, chaired a review meeting at Nabanna on Saturday and then toured the affected districts. She confirmed 39 rain-related deaths in the state and said that chief secretary will hold another review meeting on Sunday .

The West Bengal Chief Minister said that the State Government would try to support the people with its own resources but will not beg the Centre for relief. “Did the Centre send any help for Darjeeling (where landslides killed many last month)?”

While visiting the flood affected places in Howrah, at a relief camp in Howrah’s Udaynarayanpur, the West Bengal Chief Minister asked the inmates if they had any complaints and directed officials to ensure everyone in need of help received relief.

Urban development minister Firhad Hakim visited Arambagh during the day and oversaw relief arrangements. Other ministers have also been asked to visit flood affected areas to coordinate relief operations.

The Government has so far set up 946 relief camps where 1,19,030 people have already taken shelter. The number is expected to rise manifold as boats have been deployed to bring several lakh marooned people to safer locales.

Bengal will not tolerate divisive politics: Abhishek Banerjee

Trinamool Youth  Congress President and MP Abhishek Banerjee held a curtain raiser meeting at Panchla in Howrah yesterday to raise awareness regarding the mammoth sized Ekushe July Saheed Divas rally. He has been holding such meetings all over the state from North Bengal to South Bengal.

At the meeting in Panchla, the Trinamool Youth  Congress President mentioned that the BJP president keeps visiting the State time and again. The irony being that he is making an effort to consolidate a stronghold in West Bengal without even being aware of the mind frame of the people here.

The BJP have some farfetched desire to remove Mamata Banerjee as the Chief Minister of the State, the Trinamool Youth  Congress President said. However, they have hardly any comprehension of the people who thrive on the soil of Bengal or their needs. The people of Bengal favour the Trinamool Congress because the party’s leadership has an intricate understanding of their needs and delivers promises.

The BJP have actively chosen to blur the lines between religion and politics. The people of our State will not support this sort of propaganda, Abhishek Banerjee said. We have a rich legacy of communal harmony and more than a working understanding of ethical politics, he said. Our government will take rigid steps to weed out any religion biased politics present in West Bengal, he said.

State ministers Arup Roy, Rajib Banerjee, Hyder Ali Safwi and MP Sultan Ahmed and other Trinamool leaders were also present in the meeting.

Job boom in Bengal infotech industry

The infotech sector in Bengal is on a recruitment drive. As many as 50,000 jobs will be created in 15 IT parks being set up in the state and as part of hiring plans of industry majors such as Wipro, Cognizant and TCS.

Bengal finance and industries minister Dr Amit Mitra, who is also in charge of information technology department, said at least eight of the 15 IT parks will be ready by the end of July or early August. These include the IT hubs in Rajarhat, Asansol, Durgapur Phase-II, Barjora, Purulia, Bolpur, Kharagpur and Siliguri Phase-II.

In the private sector, Wipro has assured the recruitment of 2,400 employees by this fiscal, he said. “The Wipro CEO told me that they are in the process of expanding their Saltlake facility for an additional 2,400 employees,” Dr Mitra said.

He added that Cognizant had promised to hire 5,000 employees this fiscal and has already recruited 1,500. “The vice-president of Cognizant has said he would take the total number of employees to 18,000 here.”

The minister added that TCS will be ready with its second campus soon. The campus will have an employment capacity of about 20,000.

Big numbers

The state government aims to create at least 20,000 jobs in 15 IT parks. Nasscom has come forward to promote the hubs in Kalyani, Durgapur and Siliguri.

“Work is proceeding at a fast pace in seven other locations as well (other than the eight almost ready),” said Mitra. These include Kalyani, Howrah, Haldia, Taratala, Bantola, Malda and Krishnanagar.

Mitra also spoke of a hardware hub in Sonarpur that will be operational in two months and will house small and medium enterprises. Additionally, Naihati and Palta will soon have one electronic manufacturing hub each.

Employment

It is estimated that by the end of financial year 2015-16, 1,80,000 people would be employed in the IT and electronics sector, against the only 90,000 that got employment during the last year of Left Front rule (2010-11). On an average, employment in this sector is increasing by 20% annually.

IT in education

The State Government is implementing scholarship schemes online through State Service Delivery Gateway (SSDG). Computer systems with special education kits installed are being set up in schools in tribal regions. Schools for the blind are being supplied with state-of-the-art Braille monitor computers.
