This is for the first time when the implant which costs Rs 10 lakh was installed free of cost of a girl coming from economically challenged background. The initiative was taken by the Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. The state health department on Wednesday installed Cochlear implant on a 7-year-old girl Swapnika Barik.

The girl’s mother Toton Ghosh Barick, a resident of Bansulia under Mahisadal police station in East Midnapore met Banerjee at her residence a few days after the election results.

Toton, deserted by her husband requested Banerjee to save the life of her daughter, who was born deaf. She said because of economic hardship it was not possible for her to undertake her treatment.

The CM who is looking after the health portfolio, sent Swapnika to SSKM hospital where Dr Arunava Sengupta, head of the department of ENT examined her and found that Cochlear implant was necessary to combat the problem.

Dr Sengupta on Wednesday installed the implant successfully. The seven-year-old got a new lease of life. When contacted Toton said: “It was didi who has given a new lease of life to my daughter. I never thought that Swapnika would ever hear anything. Didi is God to us.”

মমতায় স্বপ্নহারা জীবনে ফুটলো কথা

মুখ্যমন্ত্রী মমতা বন্দ্যোপাধ্যায়ের সাহায্যে অবশেষে ভাষা খুঁজে পেল সাত বছরের স্বপ্ননীতা বারিক। সরকারি খরচে বুধবার এসএসকেএম-এ সফল অস্ত্রোপচার হল তাঁর৷

পূর্ব মেদিনীপুরে মহিষাদলের বাসিন্দা স্বপ্ননীতা। কিছু দিন আগে নির্বাচনের ফল ঘোষণার দিন স্বপ্ননীতার মা তোতন ঘোষ বারিক মুখ্যমন্ত্রীর বাসভবনে যান সাহায্যের আবেদন নিয়ে। তিনি জানান যে অর্থের অভাবে মেয়ের চিকি९সা করাতে পারছেন না তাঁরা।

মুখ্যমন্ত্রী সঙ্গে সঙ্গে সাহায্যের জন্য স্বাস্থ্য দফতরকে নির্দেশ দেন এবং তাকে এস এস কে এমের চিকিৎসক অরুণাভ সেনগুপ্তর কাছে পাঠান চিকি९সার জন্য। বরাদ্দ হয় ১০ লক্ষ টাকা৷

বুধবারই স্বপ্ননীতার সফল অস্ত্রোপচার করেছেন চিকি९সক অরুণাভ সেনগুপ্ত৷ ছোট বাচ্চাটির কানের হাড়ের ভিতর বসানো হয়েছে একটি ছোট যন্ত্র৷ তিন সপ্তাহ পর সেটিতে চার্জ দেওয়া হবে৷ তার জন্য কানের বাইরে লাগানো থাকবে একটি ইলেকট্রনিক ব্যাটারি৷ এর পরে বাচ্চাকে স্পিচ থেরাপি করাবেন এসএসকেএম-এর চিকি९সকরা৷ মুখ্যমন্ত্রীর সহায়তায় সাত বছরের এই মূক ও বধির শিশুটি নতুন করে তার জীবন ফিরে পেল।

তার মা বলেছেন, “দিদি আমার মেয়েকে নতুন জীবন দিয়েছে। আমি কোনদিন ভাবতে পারিনি আমার মেয়ে কথা বলতে পারবে”।

Minister of state for health Ms Chandrima Bhattacharya on Friday said that the state government will distribute certain expensive cancer drugs among poor patients free of cost in its hospitals in the city.

This is part of the project initiated by the present government to provide better health care facilities to the underprivileged.

The minister said that the decision would be implemented from 2 October. The Chief Minster had earlier expressed her desire for running a scheme through which the poor patients suffering from cancer will get some expensive drugs in the hospitals for free.

The minister today made this announcement while speaking at the inauguration of a new facility ward at the SSKM hospital. The ENT department of the SSKM hospital has conducted cochlear implant (CI) surgeries on four patients who are deaf or have hearing problem for free.

The parents of Anwesha, who was born hearing-and-speech impaired, have been running from pillar to post for their only daughter’s treatment for more than four years. When speech therapy for over two years did not work on the six-year old, doctors advised a cochlear implant.

Unable to arrange the fund, her parents had almost given up when they got a call from the doctors of the ENT department of the Institute of Post Graduate Medical Education and Research (IPGMER), saying they would conduct the implant free of cost.

Anwesha, along with three other children, will get cochlear implant free of cost on September 4 at the IPGMER.

Scheme for the needy

The ENT department at IPGMER has been chosen as the Centre of Excellence and the referral center for the state under the National Programme for Prevention and Control of Deafness by the ministry of health. Accordingly , the ministry will provide the implant while IPGMER will conduct tests, chose the patients, provide hospitalization and facilitate the transplant.

“The scheme will be a huge relief for poor parents who cannot afford the cost of the transplant. The MoU on this was signed only 26 days ago. IPGMER director who took charge recently was very keen and hence we could proceed this fast. All the four children have been admitted on Tuesday to prepare for the implant,“ said ENT head Arunabha Sengupta.

Eligibility for the scheme

To be eligible for the scheme, family income of the patient should be Rs 15,000 and below and heshe should have disability certificate from the concerned authority . The upper age limit for a child with pre-lingual deafness (where the child is born with a congenital condition or lost hearing at infancy) is 6 years of age while for those with post-lingual deafness it is 12 years. The child should not have any other underlying health problem.

The speech therapy after the transplant will be taken care of by the National Institute for Hearing Handicapped, Bonhooghly .
