The West Bengal government has decided to take over the Bengal unit of Mother Dairy also known as Mother Dairy Calcutta. It will now become a government enterprise as per a S tate Cabinet decision.
The employees will now become government employees and the enterprise will be known as “Bengal Dairy”.
Mother Dairy Calcutta which was a State government project, was started under Operation Flood II of National Dairy Development Board in 1974 . It was set up initially to cater to the demand of the Kolkata urban agglomeration spread over the Kolkata Metropolitan area, approximately 852 sq km.
Its aim was to safeguard the interest of rural milk producers by encouraging co-operative movement and marketing the surplus milk available from the villages, thus helping the milk producers to realise their own potential for organized endeavour and the creation of more rural wealth.
