WB CM personally monitors flood relief operations from Nabanna

The excessive rain for the past two days coupled with high tide and water released from Jharkhand and Odisha has rendered the flood situation in West Bengal “beyond control”, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said on Sunday.

She advised people in vulnerable areas to take shelter in relief camps to avoid “untoward incidents”.

“In the last four years, there has been no flood like this year’s. So far, we have witnessed man-made floods and we have restricted them quite successfully. But the situation at present is rendered beyond control,” Banerjee told reporters at the state secretariat Nabanna on Sunday.

“I know that it is difficult to stay out of home but life is priority. So you must stay in relief camps for two, three days,” Banerjee said, advising people in vulnerable areas to take shelter at relief camps.

Yesterday, I had said that there was 61 percent excess rainfall. Today, it’s 70 percent excess rainfall, she said.

Holding the Damodar Valley Corporation (DVC) responsible for releasing excess water resulting in floods in the state, Banerjee said, “DVC is doing business…We love them but that does not mean they will submerge Bengal.”

“Two years ago, we had written to the Centre that more than two lakh cusecs of water can be reserved in DVC reservoir only if dredging is done. I will again write to them,” she said.

The Chief Minister earlier held a meeting with Chief Secretary, DGP, IG Law and Order, IG Police and Disaster Management Secretary.

100th administrative meeting – Extract of BBC story

Chief Minister of the state of West Bengal and one of India’s leading politicians, Mamata Banerjee achieved an unusual distinction today by attending her one hundredth ‘administrative review meeting’ outside of her designated office.

Her office claims that she is the first leader ever to have addressed one hundred formal review meetings during her tenure – and emphasises that she has accomplished this away from the administrative headquarters.

”This is ‘century’ of a different sort, where all the runs were collected in ‘away’ matches”, says MP Derek O’Brien, Parliamentary leader of Ms Banerjee’s party Trinamool Congress.

The state of West Bengal has traditionally been governed from the iconic Writers’ Building in Calcutta, which was built for writers or clerks of the British East India Company in 1977. The red-brick heritage building is reminiscent of when Calcutta was in its heydey as the capital of British India.

Mamata Banerjee’s government moved out of the historic building two years ago to allow for the much-needed renovation of the 238-year-old building. Her new secretariat, ‘Nabanna’, is a mere high-rise building across the river Ganges.

However, Ms Banerjee has shown that she prefers to conduct meetings away from either the Writers’ Building or Nabanna – to the point where she has now reached a milestone by presiding over the one hundredth meeting in Burdwan, a district town 100 kilometerss away from Calcutta.

The Chief Minister’s office claims that she has touched upon every single district of West Bengal in this process and that this is a remarkable achievement in allowing the ‘devolution of power’ to grassroots movements.

WB CM inaugurates a mobile app for Burdwan district

In a first initiative in Bengal, the Burdwan district administration launched ‘Smart Burdwan’, a portal and a mobile app. Everything you have wanted to know about the district will now be at your fingertips.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who visited Burdwan for her 100th administrative meeting, commemorated the occasion by launching this portal and app.

Service of the people

One will be able to lodge complaints against departments such as PWD as well as the municipalities, the panchayat samiti, block and sub-divisional offices regarding basic infrastructure – roads, drinking water, drainage and so on.

Also, all contact information of these departments or entities can now be accessed via this app. This app can also be used to access the contact numbers of police stations, fire and emergency services, electricity, cooking gas, and so on, thereby bringing all these under a single window.

In addition, information on educational courses, admission procedure, infrastructure, placement will also be available. All details about schemes such as Kanyashree, minority scholarships, vocational training, industrial training can be accessed through this app.

To prevent the distress sale of agricultural commodities, a voice interactive system has been developed by C-DAC, which is supposed to be launched on July 15.

GI tags for sitabhog, mihidana

Some of your favourite sweets are soon expected to be sold only in the genuine form, courtesy the State’s Department of Science and Technology. The department has applied for Geographical Indication (GI) registration for Bardhaman’s sitabhog and mihidana. All documents have been sent to the Geographical Indication Registry in Chennai, and a positive outcome is expected soon.

The registration, which is a kind of patenting, guaranteeing the fact that a particular product can only be made/grown in a particular way and only in a particular place/region for it to be considered genuine, would not only help the makers of the real sweets to increase their sales and widen their market (as they can then push their products, courtesy their certificates of genuineness) but also, as a result, encourage them to improve their qualities. For a start, the Biswa Bangla store at Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport, Kolkata, whose customer base includes international and national travellers, is stocking these two prides of Bardhaman district.

The Government has been encouraged in its effort through the successful registration of the famous mowa of Joynagar last year.

Since 2004, when Darjeeling Tea became the first Indian product to get the GI tag, as the registration is often referred to, 235 products (till March 2015) from India have been registered thus. However, the share of West Bengal is very small. Some of the State’s GI gems are are the saris Baluchari, Dhonekhali and Shantipuri, the mangoes langra, Laxman bhog and fazli, kantha stitch products, and leather goods of Santiniketan.

Now this scenario is going in for a major makeover. West Bengal has enough products of timeless heritage, whose brand value is well-known too, both in the national and, for some, in the international market. However, the lack of GI registration has enabled the proliferation of cheap fakes.

The State Government has big plans to register many such unique products. Two other sweets, langcha from Shaktigarh and sarpuria from Krishnanagar, are already in the pipeline.

It’s a common enough sight in many parts of the State, especially in the south: shops selling sitabhog and mihidana from Bardhaman. Yet often they are anything but. Replicas have flooded the State; and people often unknowingly buy them. Now, the sweet-makers are on the cusp of a sweet deal, and their lives would change for the better.

Mamata Banerjee will shatter the dreams of CPM, Cong, BJP: Abhishek Banerjee

Trinamool Congress MP and TMYC National President, Abhishek Banerjee on Wednesday addressed a rally at Ranaghat, Nadia. He said those who are trying to come to power in Bengal through riots will fail.

“Mamata Banerjee will shatter the dreams of BJP, CPI (M) and Congress. She cannot be bowed down by propaganda. The people are with her,” he added.

“I am not afraid of lawsuits against me. If needed, I may go to jail too,” Abhishek added.

Abhishek also asked TMC workers who are involved with syndicates supplying construction materials to leave the party as “there is no place for them in the Trinamool Congress.”

He is currently touring districts as a run up to the Shahid Divas rally to be held at Dharmatala on 21 July. The Youth Congress President will hold another rally at Baharampur on June 26. He will be holding similar rallies at Bardhaman, Purulia, Kushmandi, Panshkura, Jainagar, Howrah and Kolkata.

Vote for Trinamool, Vote for Mamata: Abhishek Banerjee in Bardhaman

“Vote for Mamata!” was MP and president of Trinamool Youth Congress, Abhishek Banerjee’s rallying cry at the public meeting for the municipal election in Memari, in Bardhaman district, on Monday. Earlier in the evening, in Kalna (also in Bardhaman district), on the occasion of another municipal election-campaign meeting, Abhishek Banerjee underscored the Trinamool Chairperson’s championing role in the party, saying, “Those who have stood as candidates for the party, are all Mamata Banerjees.”

Monday saw another round of mammoth campaign rallies in Kalna and Memari. Senior leader and Rajya Sabha MP, Derek O’Brien and another leader, noted singer Indranil Sen had also joined Abhishek Banerjee in urging the masses to vote to victory Trinamool Congress once again. And there was no doubt, seeing the huge crowds at both the places.

Derek O’Brien backed Abhishek by saying, “You don’t need to worry about who has been chosen, or not chosen, as a candidate. Press the twin flowers-labelled button and your vote will reach Kalighat straight.”

To allegations of poll-related violence, Abhishek Banerjee emphatically responded, “The opposition is making false accusations about poll-centric violence during the Kolkata corporation elections. Let them prove even one such incident.” The CPI(M), the Congress and the BJP have not managed to do even 5 per cent of the developmental work done by Trinamool, he added.
