Dr Santanu Sen speaks on incidents of crimes against women

FULL TRANSCRIPT

Sir, thank you very much for giving me the opportunity to speak on this sensitive issue. As you all know that the Constitution of India, in Article 14 and 15, speaks about gender equality, speaks about prohibition of discrimination.

But unfortunately, as per the National Crime Record Bureau the incidents of crimes against women are increasing day by day, with some spine-chilling events like in Delhi, Telangana, in UP, Gujarat and Rajasthan.

As per the Gender Inequality Index, 2017, India ranks 127 out of 160 countries, and it might touch Syria. And as per the Gender Gap Index, India ranks 108 out of 149 countries.

So, my suggestion, as also suggested by our Hon’ble Leader of Opposition, strong steps must be taken by bringing legislations, by setting up fast-track courts and exemplary punishment must be given. That punishment should be publicised so that people can think twice before committing such heinous crimes.

Thank you very much.
