Aparupa Poddar’s Zero Hour mention on improving accessibility of buildings for the differently-abled

Madam, the Government has launched the Accessible India Campaign in 2015 which received an overwhelming response. To supplement the existing steps for the benefit of the differently-abled persons, Parliament passed the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act in 2016. Six years have passed since the inception of the campaign but the purpose of the campaign and the Act are defeated due to the delay in full implementation of the campaign and the Act. Government buildings across the country are still not specially-abled friendly, and there is a lack of compatible infrastructure like ramps and lifts. The Act mandates compliance of accessibility standards for disabled people in public buildings. In reality, they face problems in accessing government buildings and it goes unnoticed. I request the Government to carry out a structural audit of all the government buildings across the country and take steps to provide necessary infrastructure in order to ensure accessibility to the Divyangs in line with the mission and the
legislation. Thank you.
