Two integrated film cities to come up in West Bengal

While inaugurating the renovated Technicians` Studio, West Bengal Chief Minister Ms. Mamata Banerjee had promised that the state government will set up two integrated film cities in the state through public private partnership model. One of those will come up on a 50-acre plot in Baruipur (South 24 Parganas) and another on around 85 acres at Dabgram in Jalpaiguri. The projects, for which expressions of interest have been invited, will be implemented by the Information and Cultural Affairs department.

The government wants to create sustainable infrastructure for state-of-the-art motion picture and television production along with post-production centres. The government aims to create such facilities in the film cities so that it could also develop as a tourist attraction, similar to Ramoji Film City in Hyderabad. A reputable consultancy agency has been roped in to prepare the feasibility study and to provide project management services.

The two film cities will have a film studio complex with at least four sound stages, studios, film processing and equipment centres, theatres, film offices, computer imagery facilities, editing suites along with other necessary commercial infrastructure. There will also be a film school for budding actors and an institute of art and craft.

There will be logistical and infrastructural support like accommodation and revenue generating recreational facilities including tours to the film studios, museums, clubs and festivals to develop the film cities as major tourist attractions.

The Baruipur site – with 51.87 acres – lies off the Baruipur-Amtala Road and comes under Baruipur Municipality. The other site, on 84.81 acres, is at Dabgram mouza, around 15km from Siliguri town. The proposed site lies along Naukaghat Road that connects Bagdogra airport. The land is located along the river bank with minimal existing structures and relatively free of encroachment.

Summer respite for people: WB Govt to run a new fleet of 632 AC Volvo buses

The state Transport Department will ply 63 air-conditioned Volvo buses from April this year.  The buses will ply in Kolkata and its outskirts. The fare will be the same as that of the current Volvo buses. The Calcutta State Transport Corporation (CSTC) will run these buses.  The state government announced 10 new routes for AC Volvo services. The Transport Department has introduced routes touching Sealdah, Park Street, Hazra Crossing, Gariahat, Golpark, Chingri Ghata, Narkel Bagan, Park Circus, Kalikapur and Rajarhat.

Earlier, the fleet was given to private operators but they failed to pay the monthly instalments to the bank and later they grounded the vehicle. So, this time the government has entrusted CSTC to run the fleet, said state Transport Minister Mr Madan Mitra.

874 AC and non-AC buses will be bought in all. Out of these, 632 buses will ply in Kolkata, 80 in Siliguri, 60 in Jalpaiguri, 60 in Asansol and 42 in Durgapur. All these buses will be run by state transport undertakings (STUs). While CSTC will run 632 buses, North Bengal State Transport Corporation (NBSTC) will run 140 buses and South Bengal State Transport Corporation (SBSTC) will run 102 buses.

Announcing the new routes, Transport Minister Mr  Madan Mitra said, “The AC buses will decongest the city by encouraging car users to avail bus services. We have worked on the alignment so that almost every part of the city gets covered.”

The Transport Department also signed a MoU with the Bengal Aerotropolis Projects Ltd (BAPL) for managing chopper services. BAPL will manage landing facilities and other infrastructure. The government has bought 40 flying hours a month from Pawan Hans for its official trips. The unutilized hours are being used for tourism and transportation purpose.

Trinamool Chairperson slams Congress for lack of development in Assam

Trinamool Chairperson, in her speech at Martyrs` Day rally on January 30, had said that the party will contest elections across India. Eventually, veteran social activist Anna Hazare extended his support to Mamata Banerjee and at a joint press conference in New Delhi on February 19, they announced that Didi and Anna ji will be campaigning together for Lok Sabha elections.

Keeping her word of visiting other states for a national campaign, Trinamool Chairperson kick-started the campaign trail from the North Eastern state of Tripura. After holding a massive public rally in Agartala on February 25, Trinamool Chief visited Assam on February 26. Her rally at Guwahati saw a huge turnout. Speaking in Bangla, Assamese and Hindi, Didi asked people of Assam to vote for change in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.

In her trademark style, Trinamool Chief slammed the State Govt of Assam for failing to provide basic services to the people. She said that people of Assam have voted for Congress in local as well national elections, Assam even gave India the Prime Minister. But what did the state get in return?

Trinamool Chief criticised Congress government`s mishandling of riots in the state too. She said when Assam was burning and people fled the state, Bengal gave refuge to everyone with open arms. She also slammed in the inefficiency with which the state government handled the floods every year.

Citing the example of Bengal`s land banks, the West Bengal Chief Minister promised to legislate a new land policy where the Government will have no role in acquisition and forcible acquisition of land will be completely banned. She lent her support to the land movement in Assam.

Dwelling on the Land Acquisition Act, the Trinamool Chief said that her party position was that tribal people must have their rights over forest land as it was them who had been protecting the forests. She also threw her weight behind the movement of the Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS) in Assam for land rights of the forest dwellers.

Trinamool Chief also said that BJP and Congress were two sides of the same coin. While Congress has ruined the country for the last six decades, people should not vote for a party like BJP with the taint of rioting.

The West Bengal Chief Minister alleged while her State needed Rs.1,000 crore to provide jobs under MGNREGA the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government at the Centre had released only Rs. 300 crore. She accused the Congress party to be “vindictive” and “destroying the country.”

Highlighting the special connection between Bengal and Assam, Trinamool Chief spoke at length in Assamese, promising everyone to return to the state soon.

WB Govt plans to impose life-term penalty for milk adulteration

The state government plans to suggest imposition of life-term penalty to persons behind adulteration of milk. Senior office bearers with the State Milk Federation, in the presence of the state animal husbandry minister declared this during the inauguration of the state dairy here today.

The state has expressed concern that an increasing tendency of gross milk adulteration has gripped the milk trade. The Chairman, Milk Federation, Mr Paras Dutta said: “We have already detected some villages where adulteration of milk has become a common matter.” He added: “The present law to prevent such adulteration suggest a maximum 10 years of imprisonment, which we want to intensify and we have suggested enhancing this to life term against the offenders.” The Animal Husbandry Minister, Mr Swapan Debnath, after the inauguration said that the respective officials would be warned to keep sharp vigil on the offenders.

The state dairy was closed in 2004 and after 10 years it was inaugurated today after renovation. The farm would dispatch 5000 packet milks processed by Mother Dairy. “Metro dairy has assumed charge to help it running. We would now insist bringing the milk unions under a single umbrella,” said Mr Debnath.

Tourism in North Bengal receives boost with fresh proposals

Industrialist Harsh Neotia Tuesday met North Bengal Development Minister Gautam Deb at Uttarkanya with several proposals for projects, mostly in the tourism sector for the region.

Asked to comment, Mr Deb said this was a courtesy call and that Mr Neotia visited Uttarkanya with several infrastructure development proposals, mainly in the tourism sector.

“Mr Neotia is developing a tourism destination at Makaibari in the Hills. He has also selected two spots at Lataguri in the Dooars and the Batasia Loop in Darjeeling, to develop them as tourist destinations,” Mr Deb said.

Talking to reporters, he said he requested Mr Neotia to introduce a cardio-thoracic unit at the nursing home he owns in Siliguri to provide better medical services to the people here. Mr Neotia assured introduction of the medical facility here very soon, according to the minister.

Boosting the tourism infrastructure in North Bengal has been a priority of the Trinamool Government. From setting up a tourism hub in Gazoldoba, to building a film city in North Bengal – several steps have been taken by the WB CM to change the dynamics of the region. If tourism flourishes, more employment opportunities will be created, the Chief Minister believes, and rightly so. The region has immense potential waiting to be tapped.

During her speech at the Martyrs` Day rally on 30 January 2014, Trinamool Chairperson Ms. Mamata Banerjee had made it clear that Trinamool Congress was going to fight the Lok Sabha elections on a national level. She even garnered the support of veteran social activist Anna Hazare. Anna ji and Didi held a joint conference in New Delhi on February 19, where it was announced that Trinamool will contest in seats outside Bengal too.

Trinamool Chairperson had earlier said the party will be fielding candidates in many states like Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Haryana, Tripura, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur and Assam. Likewise, the Chairperson began her Lok Sabha campaign by addressing a party meeting at Agartala today.

“We have decided to field candidates for all the two parliamentary seats in the state and have started discussion with Tripura Gramin Congress to lend support to our candidates,” Tripura AITC chairman Ratan Chakraborty said. Didi would kick start the party`s campaign for the North-East from here on February 25, Chakraborty said.

“They would arrive here by a chartered flight from Kolkata and would fly to Guwahati on the same day after addressing a rally here on February 25. The rally would take a shape of historic gathering in the state,” Chakraborty said.

The Trinamool Chairperson is slated to address another rally in Guwahati tomorrow. In March, Anna ji and Didi will address a joint rally in New Delhi.

During her speech, the Chairperson said Tripura had been neglected by the Left Front Government. From jobs to roads, the state was lagging behind in every sphere. Citing examples of development in Bengal, she said that West Bengal progressed a lot after the Left Front was voted out.

Didi added that Tripura has a special connection with Bengal and the two states can progress together. She urged people to vote for Trinamool in Lok Sabha elections, if they wanted Poriborton.

Saying that Congress-BJP-CPI(M) have formed a syndicate to sell off the country, Didi added that Trinamool was the only alternative to the current government, which is in coma.
