Trinamool announces candidates for Sikkim, Andaman and Nicobar Islands

In a press conference earlier today All India General Secretary of Trinamool Congress announced two new candidates for Lok Sabha polls, while making some minor changes in the previously declared lists.

Candidate for Ranaghat Dr Saugata Barman opted out of Lok Sabha polls after meeting with an accident. His health will not permit him to contest the elections as he is immobile. The new candidate for Ranaghat Lok Sabha Constituency would be Dr Tapas Mondal, an associate professor and reader of Bidhan Chandra Krishi University. Veteran actor Biswajit Chatterjee will fight from New Delhi constituency instead of South Delhi constituency.

As promised earlier, Trinamool declared candidates for seats in other states. Nakul Das Rai will fight on the party ticket in Sikkim. He is a sitting MLA in the Sikkim Assembly. The Trinamool Candidate for Andaman & Nicobar Islands Constituency is Anita Bhakta (Mandal).

Seven years on, Trinamool remembers Nandigram martyrs

The struggle of Nadigram has created history. March 14 will go down in the pages of history for both ugly and inspiring reasons. Ugly because the blood-bath at Nandigram has been a gory face of state repression and the disturbing sign of the discontent, distress and threat to democracy created by the neo-liberal and land grab policy of the state. We can never forget the killing of innocent men, women and children who were protesting against the land grab in Nandigram on March 14, 2007.

Inspiring because of the grit, determination and fighting spirit of the common people of Nandigram who became martyrs to protect Nandigram from destruction and displacement. Despite all the fear created, despite the missing persons list increasing in the area, despite facing bullets again and again, people of Nadigram put up a great fight to save their culture, livelihood and environment.

Farmers, dalits, adivasis and women across India have been putting a brave front to oppose such development paradigm which is only leading to displacement, destruction, degradation and threatening vast rural, agricultural and forest communities. Many have given their lives for this cause not only in West Bengal but in other parts of India.

Trinamool Family salutes all those martyrs who have led down their lives for the sake of their land. We bow to the Ma, Mati, Manush.

Trinamool will be the third largest party after polls: Mamata Banerjee

Trinamool Chairperson Ms. Mamata Banerjee on March 13 said that Trinamool Congress would emerge as the third largest party and play a big role in national politics after the Lok Sabha polls. “There are two big parties Congress and BJP in our country for a long time. Trinamool Congress will emerge as the third largest party,” she told media at the airport after her return from New Delhi.

The party would surge from the state, she said. “Trinamool Congress will have a vital role in national politics with the blessings of Ma, Mati, Manush,” she commented. She said the party is fighting in all 42 Lok Sabha seats in West Bengal against CPI(M), Congress and BJP.”We believe that there will be a people`s alliance and not an unholy alliance.”

She said the party would also contest in Tripura, Assam, Jharkhand and Bihar and in some seats in Odisha, apart from Manipur and Arunachal Pradesh.

WB govt seeks EC permission to restructure rehabilitation package for Maoists

Home Department of the West Bengal Government has sought permission from the Election Commission of India to restructure the rehabilitation packages given to Maoists who surrender to the State. The Government wishes to incorporate allowances for healthcare, house rent, and cost of education among various things in these packages. A detailed report has been sent to the Election Commission so that these schemes can be launched at the earliest.

The State Government has proposed an amount of around Rs 2500 as house rent allowance. An amount of Rs 500 per head per month has been proposed as medical allowances for every surrendered Maoist and their family members.

The State Government has also proposed Rs 500 per month as educational allowance to the family of the surrendered Maoists. The same may be increased to around Rs 1500 per month after the student completes the Higher Secondary level and goes for higher education.

The Government believes that these rehabilitation packages will lead to an increased number of Maoists surrendering arms and returning to the mainstream to lead a normal life.

Transport Minister asks CSTC to ensure late-night bus service

State Transport Minister Madan Mitra asked state transport undertakings to ensure that government buses are available till 11.30 PM. Around 600 government buses, operated by three transport undertakings, ply on the city roads.
Being aware of the plight of commuters, Mr Mitra on Wednesday told CSTC board members that he was aware of the problems but that a way must be worked out to solve them. “You need to draw up a schedule where more buses could travel from the city centre to the fringes carrying late-night passengers,” he said.
The government has decided to get 632 new buses for CSTC under the JNNURM scheme. It would take a few months for the entire fleet to arrive. Last month, the government also decided to launch a new fleet of AC Volvo buses during summer for the convenience of passengers.

The candidate list included names of former bureaucrats, academicians, actors, former ministers, sitting MP, veteran politicians and people from various fields; the list was a true reflection of the society.

Trinamool Chairperson addresses a rally in New Delhi

Trinamool Congress Chairperson Ms. Mamata Banerjee addressed a rally in New Delhi at the Ramlila Maidan earlier today. Speaking on the occassion, the Trinamool Chairperson asked people to bring about a change of regime in the Centre and put an end to the syndicate of Congress and BJP. She made a strong case for a Federal Front Government.

Excerpts from the Chairperson`s speech:

Friends, brothers and sisters and everybody present here, I welcome you all.

Annaji wished that this symbolic rally should be organized at Ramlila Maidan in Delhi and invited me to speak, hence I have come here to address his rally. This is a social rally, not a political one. I came here despite pressing engagements in Kolkata because of Annaji`s request. I am happy you could make it here despite the scorching sun on a weekday. Unlike other parties, we did not bring any people from outside. We could have brought people from Bengal in trains but we did not want that.

My life has been one of struggles. I am ready to face many more. A lot of constipations are hatching up. Let it be Congress, BJP or the CPI(M ), the political parties hardly work for the people. I am not afraid of them. I am ready to fight for the sake of people alone. I will continue the fight that I started long ago. I am confident and do believe that people are with me.

People repose their faith in leaders who can fulfill their promises. I can give my life but never run away from the commitments made by me.

We will organise rallies in Gujarat, UP, Haryana, Bihar, Jharkhand, Tripura, Assam and if needed in Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Punjab and South India. Biswajeet Chatterjee, the veteran actor, has agreed to contest on Trinamool ticket. Whatever we do, we do it from our heart. We do not make fake promises before elections and then sleep over our commitments after polls.

Rich parties can spends lakhs for election campaigning. We cannot do so. We are a poor party. But, what we can do is keep our promises. No other political party can do this.

When we were with UPA, we stuck to our manifesto. When the Central Govt broke the trust of the people, we left the UPA. We cannot betray people on the promises we made.

The UPA Govt takes Rs 70,000 crores from our treasury as instalments for the debt incurred by the Left Front Govt in the last 34 years. In spite of that, we have worked for the people.

BJP says that it will come to power. How? Every state is different and has their own local issues. Can any state carry out development like we do, despite the huge financial crunch?

The leader of Gujarat leader has a communal face. Do you know, the rate of of child deaths in Gujarat is 41%. If Gujarat is so developed, why is the figure so high there? In WB it is only 32%. Dropout rate in schools of Maharashtra is 1.7%. Why is it 2.1% in Gujarat?

Some parties are trying to form a Third Front. It is a tired front. Congress and BJP have formed a syndicate in Parliament to not let other parties have a voice. The Congress and BJP can come together to sell the country also. We have seen them together in Parliament not letting others to even bring amendments. They do not have any time for common people.

We give rice to 3.2 crore people in West Bengal at Rs 2/kg every month. We gave cycles to 2 lakh girls, scholarships to 7 lakh minority students and 77 lakh people belonging to SC/ST categories.

The growth rate of Bengal`s GSDP is 7.71% while the national average is 4.9%. Even on the economic front, we are ahead of the Central Govt. You need a vision to run a country. Feudal landlord mindset does not help. You need to connect to the people. I do not want power for myself. I want people to have the power. If we come to power, we will not allow the Govt to bulldoze the voice of the people. We will not allow forcible acquisition of land.

Earlier the Bengal Govt was called load-shedding govt. Now there are hardly any power cuts. We have formed a power bank. We are also reducing price of power for our consumers, not by giving subsidies but through better management. We do not make false promises to people. Water is free in Bengal. We don`t give one or two buckets of free water.

We are making a talent bank for the youth. We are working towards bringing down dropout rate in schools by framing up scholarship schemes. We registered 9 lakh girl children for financial assistance. We have given second language status to Urdu, Punjabi, Nepali, Santhali. Chhat puja is a state holiday in Bengal. So is Shab-e-barat and Guru Nanak`s birthday. We respect all cultures and traditions.

Congress and BJP work for each other`s benefits, they do not work for the country. As long as I am alive, I will work for people. I just want UPA to go. But we do not want a party of riots in power. If you challenge the Congress, they unleash the CBI and ED and IT department behind you. They stay in power through their blackmail tactics.

We want a Federal Front that will make the states stronger.  I started with Kolkata, but I can start from anywhere. Punjab, Delhi, Bihar – all are my states. We have worked for the people, and will continue doing so. If we have to shake Delhi, we need people`s support.

Thank you all for coming for the rally.

Trinamool Chairperson wants the youth of the country to play active part in politics

Trinamool Congress Chairperson Ms. Mamata Banerjee Tuesday put up a strong defence against criticism that she stressed on glamour and star power while deciding the party`s list of Lok Sabha candidates, saying she wanted them to have a say in national politics.

Didi said that they had been nominated because she wanted them “to have a say in national politics”. “The new faces have been inducted to give a truly representative look to the list of candidates”.

She was talking to reporters at the NSCB Airport before leaving for Delhi where she would address a joint rally with anti-graft activist Anna Hazare at Ram Lila Ground to kickstart the campaign for Trinamool candidates.

Putting her full faith on new candidates she said, “The youths should be given opportunity in politics. No one becomes politician overnight.”

“I want more and more young people to come into politics. If the younger generation is not encouraged, then who will manage the affairs (in the country) in the future?” she asked.

Pointing out that Trinamool`s candidate list was an exercise to give representation to people from all walks of life` Ms. Banerjee said that the film and cultural personalities could pursue their respective professions while at the same time serving people as “future representatives” in Parliament.

Didi emphasised a difference between her party`s list and those of others, explaining that while “other parties do not field them (the celebrities) in seats where they have winning possibilities; we put them in winnable seats and get them elected”.

She said that this “fight is also against injustices done against West Bengal”. She was referring to the Centre`s non-acceptance of the state`s demand for restructuring the loans left behind by the previous Left Front government.
