WB CM condoles the death of legendary singer Firoza Begum

WestBengal Chief Minister Ms Mamata Banerjee condoled the death of legendary singerFiroza Begum. On her Facebook page, she wrote:

“I am verysad to learn that the legendary Firoza Begum has just breathed her last. Her passing away will certainly create a huge void in the world of music andculture. Firoza Begum's renditions in music are truly unforgettable. She was like a bond that bridged the cultural worldof Bangladesh and West Bengal.

We were honoured to confer on her our prestigious'Sangeet Mahasamman' award in 2012. In our first 'Agomoni' programme scheduledon 22nd September this year, we had decided to honour her with the State'shighest civilian award, 'Banga Bibhusan'. She had also agreed to come toKolkata to receive the award.

But, now it's all over.

Hardly about 10 days back, we talked to each other. To me, her passing away is indeed a great personal loss. She used to treat meas a member of her family.

I remember, on the last occasion of our meeting, she was in tears while leaving and told me… 'ar ki dekha hobe?'

Today, these words keep ringing in my ears.

Firozadi, wherever you are, you will always be inour hearts.

Credibility of CBI is under question: Trinamool

Senior leader of the party and PanchayatMinister Subrata Mukherjee today addressed a press conference at TrinamoolBhavan, along with party Secretary General Partha Chatterjee to counter thesmear campaign launched against the party by sections of the media.

Highlightsof Subrata Mukherjee's speech:

  • People must come forward to condemn thenegative political culture promoted in the State by certain sections.
  • It is unprecedented that a media house istrying to play the Opposition party. They are destroying democracy.
  • Is it the job of a media house to play therole of Opposition party? Should they issue statements like Opposition leaders do?
  • The CBI is being used as a pawn to settlepolitical scores by the ruling party.
  • A deep conspiracy has been hatched todefame Mamata Banerjee, whose credibility is beyond question.
  • We condemn the smear campaign in thestrictest possible words. This is a worst precedence.
  • If CBI performs its duties in a non-partisanmanner, we will welcome it. We will not tolerate CBI being used for politicalpurpose.
  • We believe in healthy politics. We do notbelieve in the culture of smear campaigns and mud-slinging.

Highlightsof Partha Chatterjee's speech:

  • BJP is indulging in a dirty political game, using the CBI, ahead of bypolls in Bengal.
  • At a time when Mamata Banerjee is trying totake Bengal to heights of development, ABP-BJP are indulging in smear campaign.
  • The credibility of CBI is under questionnow.
  • WB CM comes from a humble background, leadsa simple life. Some sections are deliberately targeting her.
  • All chit funds, right from 1980 to 2012,should be investigated and the perpetrators must be punished.

The lady is not for turning

I can only laugh at those who accuseMamata Banerjee of corruption even though they know better. She will battlethem, battle their toxic arguments, and win. She always has, for her life hasbeen one of struggle. It was so right from the time her father died, when asthe only daughter of the house she took charge of her mother and four brothers, worked behind a milk booth in the morning, and went to law college in theafternoon.

When she joined the Congress, the bigleaders of the party and the media barons who socialised with them, discussingfine wines every evening and boasting of trips to Wimbledon, did not give her achance. She faced discrimination on grounds of gender, of class, and due to herdetermination to take on the CPI(M) and not secretly play second fiddle to it.

In 1996-97, this Congress elite pushedher out of the party. In 1998, she set up the Trinamool Congress. The familiarclique and the media baron claque mocked her as a has-been. For a decade shestruggled. When she opposed the injustice in Singur and Nandigram, the samemedia barons and their new-found heroes in the then West Bengal governmentdismissed her as obsolete. Yet, she fought on, and she triumphed in the stateelection of 2011.

She had ousted the Communists from theirstronghold. She had become the only Congress breakaway leader to form agovernment on her own terms, to make a name for herself without having to goback to her former party or do a humiliating deal with it. She called the shots.

Three years later came the Lok Sabhaelection. The media baron cabal was back. There was a 'Modi effect' in Bengal,we were told. Mamata was finished, we were told. She would peak at 20 seats, wewere told.

What happened? The so-called 'Modieffect' took the BJP from one seat (Darjeeling) to two. Trinamool finished with 34 of thestate's 42 Lok Sabha seats.

Now there are new conspiracies and newconspirators in town. The same media barons have jumped from the tired, oldCongress to the tired, not-so-old CPI(M) to the tiresome, not-quite-old BJP.They have found a new champion; Mamata Banerjee remains the perennial hatefigure of course.

Consider the irony. A BJP president whowas investigated by the CBI and accused the CBI of being the 'Congress Bureauof Investigation' now comes to Bengal and threatens to use the same CBI as asword to attack Mamata Banerjee. And the media barons clap away like wide-eyedschool children.

Mamata Banerjee is ready for anindependent enquiry. The key culprit in the Saradha scandal was arrested inJammu and Kashmir. An MP implicated in the case in behind bars. A commissionhas been set up to ensure investors begin to get back their money.

Bring on the CBI, bring on the BJP hatearmy, bring on the quick-change and hypocritical media barons.

The lady is notfor turning.
