South Korean delegation meets WB CM to discuss possible investment in the state

The South Korean Ambassador to India Mr Joon Gyu Lee called on West Bengal Chief Minister Ms Mamata Banerjee at the state secretariat Nabanna.
Mr Lee was at the head of a three-member delegation to the chief minister, state secretariat sources said.  Issues relating to possible South Korean investment and their cooperation in related areas was said to have discussed, among other things, in the meeting which lasted for about 50 minutes.
The delegation would again meet State Finance and Industry Minister Dr Amit Mitra today.
Incidentally, soon after the Chief Minister's maiden business trip to Singapore, a Malaysian business delegation led by its High Commissioner in India, Mr Datuk Naimun Ashakli Bin Mohammad had a meeting with Hon'ble Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee at Nabanna in the last week of August, 2014. The delegation had discussed investment opportunities in Bengal as well as improving trade relations with the state.

Centre accedes to Bengal`s request, Sagar Islands included in Clean Ganga Project

West Bengal government had reputedly requested the Centre to include the state in its Clean Ganga Project. The State Irrigation and Waterways Minister Mr Rajib Banerjee had met the Central Minster in this regard. Finally, the Centre has acceded to the State's request to include the Sagar Islands and Ganga river stretch, flowing through the state, in Clean Ganga project and approved it on Monday.
Developing Gangasagar
The state irrigation and waterways department minister who attended the meeting representing the Bengal government, said that previously, the river stretch up to Baranasi came under the purview of Clean Ganga project.
“We urged the Centre to include the stretch of river flowing through our state in the project. The proposal has been approved in today's meeting. Now, the entire Ganga river stretch flowing through West Bengal, including the Gangasagar, has been brought under the purview of Clean Ganga scheme. With this, work on Gangasagar rejuvenation will start soon,” Mr Banerjee said.
Boosting tourism
The state had earlier planned to include the Sagar Islands in the NGRBA scheme with special focus on solid waste management, sewerage treatment and beach development. Chief Minister Ms Mamata Banerjee has been stressing on developing Sagar Islands as an international standard tourism hub. The government had earlier constituted the Gangasagar Development Authority to spruce up infrastructure in the area.
Chief Minister Ms Mamata Banerjee is scheduled to visit the Sagar Islands on October 30, along with senior government officials, with an aim to explore tourism scope in the area. There is a sun-baked virgin beach dotted with mangroves and other plants that can be developed as a potential tourist destination. The plan will be presented before the Chief Minister when she visits the area.

German help for waste-to-power project in Howrah

Howrah has walked a step ahead towards green energy after a German team of experts visited the town for a garbage-to-electricity project on Monday. The district, which produces around 500 tonne of garbage every day, has potential to produce around 1,000 MW of electricity from the waste.
The project, part of a long-term project on renewable energy, is likely to meet the power demand of the district to a large extent. According to sources, when implemented in full, it will have the potential to meet some of the power demands in nearby towns and cities too.
Huge power source
A team of experts from Germany visited Howrah garbage dumping yard at Belgachhia on Monday. The team, led by HA Detample, made the first visit to the dumping yard site. Detample, who is an expert at the German waste-to-energy firm Intec Micro Powder AG, felt that the project has the potential to produce 2 MW power per day from the waste at the site. The company, headquartered in Berlin, is one of the pioneers in synthesis gas systems used in drawing energy from waste.
According to Sailesh Rai, vice-chairman of Howrah Municipal Trade Development Zone, generators are driven by gas produced from waste. This process allows feeding electricity to public grids. While the project will require an investment of around Rs 2,500 crore, almost 90% of that will be borne by the German company.
A cleaner and greener future
“The state government will have an investment of 10% and the Howrah Municipal Corporation (HMC) will provide land for the project,” said Shyamal Mitra, MMiC of HMC. The municipality will allocate the entire area of 33 bighas for the dumping yard, sources said.

Five Tata group managing directors on Monday called on West Bengal Chief Minister, Mamata Banerjee, to discuss about their respective companies.
The managing directors- Rana Sinha of Tata Hitachi Construction Machinery Company, Dibyendu Bose of TM International Logistics Limited, Sandipan Chakravortty of Tata Steel Processing and Distribution Limited, Viresh Oberoi of mjunction, and Sanjiv Paul of Tata Metaliks – met at Nabanna, the makeshift state secretariat. Finance and industry minister, Dr Amit Mitra, was also present.
A follow-up meet
“This was just a follow-up meet after Chief Minister's Bijoya Sammilani. She had asked us whether there were any issues. So this meeting was organised to discuss the future of manufacturing,” Tata Hitachi managing director, Rana Sinha said.
“Forget the issues of the past and target the future,” he added.
Tata Steel Processing and Distribution Ltd MD Sandipan Chakraborty said WB CM asked them if they were facing any problems and how the state government could assist them to overcome them. 
“Such an interaction with the CM is unprecedented. The meeting was positive, optimistic and fruitful,” Mr Chakraborty said.
Expansion of investments
Talking to the media after the meeting, Tata Metaliks MD Sanjiv Paul said his company was all set to invest Rs 1500 crore creating employment opportunity for about 2,500 people.
Metaljunction MD & CEO Viresh Oberoi, also the Chairman of the CII Eastern Region, said the Chief Minister asked him to take care of some tea gardens in north Bengal.
“The Chief Minister was interested in our e-auction of natural resources and asked us whether we could auction five tea gardens owned by the state government in Dooars. We have sought details,” Mr Oberoi said. 
A fruitful meeting
After the 90-minute long meeting, state Finance and Industry Minister Amit Mitra told reporters that Tata Group was keen on expanding many of their existing projects in the state creating more employment opportunities.  He added that TCS CEO and MD N Chandrasekaran wrote to him about its expansion plan.

This winter, about 1.18 crore students of classes I to VIII across Bengal's 16,000 government-aided primary schools, 12,000 aided secondary schools and 42 government schools will turn out in either a sweater or pullover gifted by the state government.
These will be handed over to the students once the school education department works out the nitty-gritty of the plan.
Respite from cold
“As chairman of the state advisory committee, I have discussed various proposals with deputy chairman and other members, including the one to distribute winter clothing to children. I will take up the issue after calculating the cost involved,” said Education Minister Dr Partha Chatterjee.
He also said, “Some schools have morning sessions which make it difficult for the students without woollens to attend classes. Moreover, students in government and government-aided schools receive uniforms. This winter gear will be in addition to it. After seeking Chief Minister Ms Mamata Banerjee's approval and securing financial approval for the plan, we will be able to distribute the winter garments.”
Boost for school infrastructure
The Minister has also suggested starting value education in schools. This is in order to focus on man-making. Dr Chatterjee has asked the committee to include moral value within the syllabus or within the class routine.
It has also been proposed to create a post of sports teacher who will be appointed in each school circle comprising of various clusters of schools to identify the sporting talents in Bengal. The government may also introduce promotional scale for teachers in schools.

Bengal to promote MSME sector in SE Asian countries

The state government has decided to send several department secretaries to countries like South Korea, Japan, Malaysia and others to attract investments for the micro, small and medium scale industries in the state. Apart from trying to bring investments to the state, secretaries will prepare for the forthcoming Bengal global business summit, scheduled to be held in the city in January, along with promoting the Biswa Bangla brand.
Among the secretaries chosen for the trips are the finance secretary, the WBIDC managing director, the MSME secretary, the urban development secretary, the transport secretary and the higher education secretary. A few other secretaries could also be chosen to visit a other countries in Europe. The secretaries will make the visits by November.
West Bengal Chief Minister Ms Mamata Banerjee will be present at the national level meeting of Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) on November 7.
It was after the CM's Singapore trip that it was decided that the initiative will be followed by sending representatives to Singapore and other countries in an effort to bring investments, with special emphasis on the micro, small and medium scale industries. The government also formed sectoral committees on urban infrastructure, tourism and transport to follow up to pursue the industry initiatives.
The government is stressing on developing the MSME sector. Bengal has secured first position in the field of micro, small and medium enterprises (MSME) sector in terms of growth. 152 new clusters have been set up in the last three years in the MSME, handloom and khadi sectors and more than 35,000 new units have been set up in MSME sector with employment of nearly 3.20 lakh. The MSME sector has seen the highest credit disbursement worth Rs 35,000 crore over the last three years.

West Bengal Chief Minister Ms Mamata Banerjee today inaugurated several medical facilities at SSKM hospital. She inaugurated two new academic buildings for SSKM hospital, a digital X Ray facility for Bangur hospital and an MRI facility for National Medical College.
At the inauguration ceremony she criticised the Central Government for increasing the prices of life saving drugs. She highlighted that the health infrastructure in Bengal has tremendously improved in the last three years.
WB CM announced that 2500 nurses will be recruited soon. She also said that 50 new fair-price laboratories will be opened in the State by December. The Chief Minister announced that in the next two years 40 new multi super-speciality hospitals will be set up in Bengal.

West Bengal Chief Minister Ms Mamata Banerjee inaugurated several Kali Puja across the city over the last two days. 
On Monday she was in the north and central Kolkata, while on Tuesday she visited Kali puja committees in south Kolkata.
Wishing people a Happy Diwali in advance, she said that safety should be the priority for people while celebrating the festival of lights. 
“We should see to it that our pleasure should not become a matter of pain for others. We should always remember not to hurt anybody while celebrating the festival,” she said while inaugurating a Kali Puja pandal in central Kolkata.
Incidentally, Kali Puja is held at the residence of the Chief Minister; everyone is welcome to attend the puja at her home.
