Industry captains laud WB CM`s tourism initiative at Sagar Islands

Mamata Banerjee visited Sagar Island along with a team of industrialists on October 30 to boost the tourism in that region.

The group of industry captains, who visited Sagar Island along with her, feels that it has the potential for both leisure and spiritual tourism.

First mover advantage

Keventer Agro Ltd, which has a presence in the restaurant business, is already planning a joint venture with a city-based realtor. Mayank Jalan, managing director of the company said, “Whoever starts now, will have a first mover advantage there. We have already spoken to the CM and are waiting for the government to respond.” Located about 100 km south of Kolkata, Sagar Island is on the Bay of Bengal. Known for its importance as a destination for spiritual tourism, Gangasagar draws millions of devotees during makar-sankranti.

“But tourism can actually be extended beyond pilgrimage in the area.It is difficult to find such a beautiful long beach anywhere nearby,” said Sanjay Agarwal, managing director of Century Plyboards and president of MCC Chamber of Commerce and Industry. “The waves are not very choppy .Neither are they calm. That makes a perfect spot for adventure sports,” Agarwal said.

Huge potential

Kolkata-based Sumit Dabriwala feels that with the state government taking initiative, it has opened up 'massive opportunity'. “There are a few issues regarding transport, power and sewerage, which the government is trying to address. Rest is left to the private investors,” he said. The Centre has approved Rs 500 crore for the face-lift project for Gangasagar under the National Ganga River Basin Authority . While the Center will provide 70% of funds, state will provide the rest.

Luxury travel opportunities

According to Vijay Dewan, MD, Apeejay Surrendra Park Hotels Ltd, there is an opportunity to create a destination resort for luxury travel and an economy hotel for pilgrimage tourism. The group will soon do a feasibility study regarding investment there.”The government is committed to provide full support for development of this area,” Dewan said.

According to Dabriwala, the state is also looking at the possibility of starting a sea-plane and chopper service. “With sea-planes you can bring down travel time to 30 minutes,” he said.

According to Jalan, the ease of accessibility is one of the key points to make a destination popular.

WB Govt plans mega road project connecting north and south Bengal

State government is set to come up with a 270-km north-south corridor linking the districts of north and south Bengal for better connectivity.

The Asian Development Bank will assist the state government in constructing the corridor.

The corridor will run from Mechogram in Haldia to Morgram in Jangipur. Connecting East Midnapore and Murshidabad, the road will pass through Hooghly, Burdwan and Nadia. A detailed project report is being prepared by the West Bengal Highway Development Corporation. In the first phase, two stretches will be constructed between Mechogram to Ghatal and Arambag to Burdwan.

According to a senior official, the corridor will help ease traffic congestion within the city as vehicles plying through this road will not have to enter the city.

The corridor will provide an alternative route to NH-34.

An assessment will be done to identify stretches for four-lanes and two-lanes.

The cost of the project has been pegged at around Rs 4,500 crore of which 70 per cent will be ADB-funded.

If things go as planned the government will float the requisite tenders by March 2015, said the official.

Upgradation work is already underway on several stretches, including Tribeni-Kalna-Katwa Road, Chanditala-Seakhala-Champadanga Road, Barjora-Durlavpur More (Mejia) Road and Dankuni-Chandannagar-Mogra.

For improving the road infrastructure of the state, the corporation conducts a survey from time to time for assessing the viability of expanding the state highways. Bengal has 19 state highways with a total length of 4400 km. The corporation is responsible for their maintenance.

Mother Teresa Wax Museum in Rajarhat to house statues of legends like Lata, Amitabh, Shahrukh Khan

WB CM Ms Mamata Banerjee is going to inaugurate the Wax Museum at Rajarhat on November 10, 2014. The museum, which has been named after Mother Teresa by the Chief Minister, will house wax statues of legends like Lata Mangeshkar, Amitabh Bachchan and Shahrukh Khan.

The museum has been planned on the lines of London's Madame Tussauds wax museum. It is located at Rajarhat New Town on a 5000 sq ft area on the top floor of the Finance Centre building.

Mother Teresa Wax Museum will be the city's first ever wax museum and a major tourist attraction in the city. The authorities had invited sculptors and artists to give them life size exquisite wax statues of eminent personalities.

After coming to power, developing Rajarhat has been a priority for WB CM. From the Eco Park to a Convention Centre, Rabindra Tirtha to Nazrul Tirtha – Rajarhat Newtown is gradually becoming a world-class tourist destination. HIDCO has already launched a bus-tour around Rajarhat for tourists.

WB CM visits Sagar Islands with a team of industrialists to boost tourism

The State government is focusing attention on developing tourism in and around the Sagar Islands and trying to promote the destination as the biggest tourism hub in eastern India. The decision to do so was taken after the discovery of a number of virgin islands near Sagar Islands.
Chief Minister Ms Mamata Banerjee has undertaken a business trip to the islands, accompanied by a number of industrialists, with the aim of seeking investment in tourism and infrastructure development.
The government will also project the deep sea port off Sagar Island as an investment destination. The Chief Minister's business meet, is, of course, preceded by a series of meetings, trekking and exploration by senior government officers of places and entire routes that she is planning to showcase to the investors accompanying her on the trip.
Exploring tourism potential
Though the trip primarily aims at seeking investment, the Chief Minister wants to project that the islands can, with a little help, be transformed into a tourism hub of international standard that could offer globe-trotters an exciting bouquet of travel experience: sun-baked virgin beaches, river and sea cruises, stays in tents and on yachts, adventure sports and, of course, the Sundarbans, the largest single block of tidal halophytic mangrove forest in the world, home to the Bengal Tiger. The Gangetic delta of the Sunderbans also offers spectacular views.
The government plans to offer a common booking system for all available facilities through a single portal. The grand plan was preceded by painstaking research and recces along the route by senior officials, such as the transport secretary, tourism secretary, director general of coastal security and district magistrates. This was essential to fix the nitty-gritty of the plan.
Water inland transport
The Sagar Island, which is one of the state's biggest and most important pilgrimage spots, hosts one of the biggest annual congregation of pilgrims: the Sagar Mela. Significantly, the tourism hub can grow without affecting or encroaching upon the mela, thanks to new areas we have stumbled upon.
To put maximum emphasis on the water-inland transportation, the government has set up a task force headed by water inland transport director to explore the possibilities in sea and river tourism.
The coastal region also offers innumerable creeks and rivulets to explore. Once the plan gets approved, it will be included in the proposed tourism circuit project that the state government has planned on a 500km stretch from Jangalmahal to the Sagar Islands. The tourism department has submitted a detailed report to the Centre for the proposed project to be approved and funded.

Tata Motors welcome to return to Singur, provided they return land to unwilling farmers: Partha Chatterjee

Dr Partha Chatterjee, West Bengal's Education Minister, said that Tata Motors Ltd was welcome to return to its abandoned Singur factory, provided they return land to the unwilling farmers. Tata Motors was most welcome to set up industry on the rest of the land, he remarked.
“This will send a positive signal,” he said.
“Tatas are a very big industrial house. They have big projects in the state. They (Tatas) have love for people. We hope that they would be pro-active in the resolution of the Singur problem,” added the minister.
“Tatas are welcome in Bengal. We want them to expand their business in the state. We never had any fight with the Tatas. The only difference between us was in the process of acquisition of land at Singur,” Dr Chatterjee, who is also the state's Parliamentary Affairs Minister told reporters.
He also added that Mamata Banerjee went on a hunger strike for 26 days for the sake of the farmers from Singur. If Tatas return the land, the company's goodwill will be boosted, said Dr Chatterjee.
Previously on Monday, top officials of various Tata group companies called on WB CM at Nabanna and expressed their willingness to expand their factories in the state.

A terrorist is a terrorist. He has no caste: WB CM

West Bengal Chief Minister Ms Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday said a terrorist has no caste and all people from a community should not be blamed for subversive acts.
“A terrorist is a terrorist. He has no caste,” the Chief Minister said at the inauguration ceremony of a Jagaddhatri Puja at Posta. She said that that love stays with those who belong to the soil, not with rioters.
Recalling the anti-Sikh riots in various parts of the country that followed the assassination of then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi on Oct 31, 1984, she said all people from one community should not be seen with the same eyes.
