Honouring Swami Vivekananda’s legacy: Bengal shows the way

West Bengal Government, led by Chief Minister Ms Mamata Banerjee has been pro-active since 2011 in honouring the great visionary and icon Swami Vivekananda.

“His life, work and vision is our inspiration and we are committed and proud to carry forward his message of universal brotherhood, peace, unity and development of humanity,” wrote Mamata Banerjee on her Facebook page.

Some works by West Bengal government in preserving the legacy of Swami Vivekananda:

  • West Bengal government has given autonomy and special status to Ramakrishna and Sarada Mission educational institutions, which are associated with Swami Vivekananda’s ideology to impart education and foster character building.
  • “Vivek Tirtha”, a Centre for Human Excellence coming up as a replica of the famous Art Institute of Chicago is being set up on 5 acres of land in New Town given by our Government. Government has also allocated Rs.10 Crore to start work of this centre of international excellence.
  • Premises adjoining Swamiji’s ancestral house has been acquired and handed over to Ramakrishna Mission.
  • “Mayer Bari” in Baghbazar is also being befittingly renovated and our government has allocated Rs.30 Crore for rehabilitation of people around the premises suitably.
  • Ramakrishna Mission has renovated “Roy Villa” in Darjeeling associated with the memory of Sister Nivedita and we allocated Rs.2 Crore for this work. It has also been handed over to Ramakrishna Mission.
  • The government has already acquired Sister Nivedita’s one house at Baghbazar and duly handed over to Ramakrishna Sarada Mission and are considering giving it heritage status.
  • The famous shrine at Dakshineswar associated with the memory of Swami Vivekananda is being connected with a Sky Walk to facilitate easy movement of visitors.
  • “Yuva Bharati Krirangan”, Bidhannagar of international repute has been named after Vivekananda.
  • The Self Help and Self Employment Department runs a major self-help scheme for our youth in the name “Swami Vivekananda Swanirbhar Karmasansthan Prakalpa”.
  • This year “Vivek Chetana Utsav” commemorating his birth anniversary is being celebrated in a befitting manner across all Blocks, Sub-divisions, Districts, Municipalities, Municipal Corporations, State from 10th to 12th January, 2016.

West Bengal Government observes Vivek Chetana Utsav across the State

Like every year, the Youth Affairs Department, in association with Ramakrishna Math and Mission, is organising the Vivek Chetana Utsav from January 10-12, 2016, to mark the 153rd birth anniversary of Swami Vivekananda. Brainchild of Mamata Banerjee, the festival was conceived after Trinamool came to power in 2011.

Celebrations would be held all over the State – in 341 blocks, 121 municipalities, six municipal corporations, including in the 144 wards of Kolkata Municipal Corporation, GTA and in all the district capitals.

Among the activities would be ceremonial processions, exhibitions on the life and works of Swami Vivekananda, discussions on the character-building of students and the youth, quizzes on Swami Vivekananda, debates, exhibition football matches, sit-and-draw competitions, essay-writing competitions, and other cultural competitions and programmes.

The State Government wishes for a successful Vivek Chetana Utsav, through the cooperation of all stakeholders.

Malda: Trinamool Congress issues statement

Statement issued by Derek O’Brien, Chief National Spokesperson:

1. The situation in Kaliachak, Malda was tense, but never got out of hand. The police handled the issue tactfully. Thankfully, no deaths occurred, no injuries and 10 people have been arrested.

2. This was a ‘criminal issue’ but the BJP/RSS, as is their strategy, tried to turn it into a ‘communal issue’. They did this by trending hashtags on Twitter, sharing year-old photographs and posting irresponsible tweets with the help of their social media ‘army’.

3. The BJP/RSS were trying for the last one week to present, what I call, CIN 100: Communally Insensitive Narrative, 100 days before the State goes to polls. They follow the same tactic in all election-bound States.

4. The BJP team did not come here this morning for a ‘fact finding mission’. They came here for a ‘fuel the communal tension’ mission.

5. We now hear that this morning the leaders were now stating this was opium/fake currency issue. We have been saying all along this is a sensitive issue in a border town and not a communal issue.

6. Trinamool believes in working for people irrespective of community, caste or creed. Our track record of development for the last five years, across sectors, is there for all to see. Our focus is on development.

Saugata Roy speaks on the reports of forcible conversion in Agra | Transcript

Sir, I rise to speak on the discussion under Rule 193. As you said earlier, this is a sensitive issue and we should not do or say anything which raises the communal temperature of the House or the country. We should discuss the whole matter dispassionately and calmly.
What happened in Agra? In Agra, in a slum cluster called Madhunagar, 200 Muslims were reconverted to Hinduism, in a religious function called ghar wapsi (get back home). They were promised ration card and houses. Farhan, a Muslim from that area he said that 40 people in saffron scarves came and stood on their head. This was carried out by Dharma Jagran Samanya Vibhag, an RSS offshoot and Bajrang Dal.
Sir, as a citizen of this country, as people’s representative, I feel somehow worried about the turn of events in the country. It is known historically that when capitalists fail to give economic relief they go for religious or racial issues; the best example is Adolf Hitler, who on the basis of Aryanism created Fascism which is a mixture between reactionary philosophy and capitalism. This is something I am worried about.
Just today one respected member of the House said in a speech in Maharashtra that both Mahatma Gandhi and Nathuram Godse were patriots. Is this what the BJP accepts? I thought that BJP is for Ram. Now I know BJP is for Nathuram. I do not appreciate that.
I am astounded by this statement by a senior Minister. She said that the Gita could be the National Book or National Scripture. I have read Gita, memorized. It is a matter of believe. But my soul doesn’t teach me that I have to force Gita on somebody whose religious book may be Quran, Granth Sahib, Tripitak or the Bible. Why should I impose that on him? This is called majoritarianism. Jo sankha guru hay usko mat dusre por lagao, isi ka hum khilaf hay.
Sir, I have come from Bengal where the great Sage Ramakrishna Paramahansa Dev said Joto Mot Toto Poth. There are as many ways as there are opinions. His great disciple Swami Vivekananda went to America and he said I am a Hindu Sanayasi and I have come to talk about the teaching from Guru Ramakrishna but he never said that Christians must get converted to Hinduism. He said it is a question of belief.
Now what is happening in our country? In Delhi, two churches are vandalised and destroyed. In a place in Trilokpuri, just before the Delhi election, communal riot takes place. Several hundred small and big communal riots have taken place. You all know Muzaffarnagar riots and how we polarized the society. It gets political benefit to a certain political party but do you want these things to happen? You wanted power, you got power. Now it is your responsibility to see that everybody in this country can live peacefully according to the Constitution.

Sir, I salute the founding fathers of the Constitution. We happen to be victim of the partition. Jinnah created Pakistan on the basis of two nation theory. In spite of that, the great founding fathers – Gandhi ji, Nehru ji, Azad, Ambedkar, Rajendra Prasad – created a secular Constitution. And what did it say? “We the people of India, having solemnly resolved to constitute India into a Sovereign Socialist Secular Democratic Republic.”
In the educational field, the Vice Chancellors are being appointed on political and communal basis. Is this what we want our Vice Chancellors to be? The President of ICHR, Indian Council for Historical Research, has no other subject, he wants to find out exact date of Ramayana and Mahabharata. There is a difference between mythology, epics and actual solid history. Maybe he is not aware of that.
I have mentioned in this House earlier, that the HRD Minister, spends time with Dinanath Batra, the ideologue of Hindu Communalist Organisation and astrologer. Now what happened to the scientific temper that Nehru ji had proposed? Sir, that is why, I am worried and I again through you Sir, appeal to the members of the ruling party, Sir, let us give up this divisive attitude.
They need not revert to divisive politics for political gains. They have all the power in the world, let them change the country. Achhe din agar lana hai toh laya jai, lekin logo me bibhajan paida math kare. Hindu Muslim Sikh Isaai, Apas me sab bhai bhai.
In the end, I want to quote Rabindranath Tagore. He said:
Esho hey arjo, esho anarjo, hindu-musalman.
Esho esho aaj tumi ingraj, esho esho khrishtan.
Esho brahmon, shuchi kori mon dharo haath sabaakaar.
Let this great country with a tradition older than 5000 years, not it be divided on the basis of religion, caste or community. Let us together march towards the future unitedly, as was envisaged in the Constitution.

Derek O’Brien speaks on the sexual assault of a woman by a cab driver in Delhi | Transcript

Sir, there were two incidents last week, both in Delhi, both involving people who are desperately fighting for their rights. The one where the minister gave a statement about the woman and the other about minorities in Delhi whose church was burnt.

I want to make three direct questions to the Home Minister because we had this sad incident on the December 16 two years ago. So from the December 16, 2012 till now what has been done?
How many all women’s police stations have been set up in Delhi in the last two years? I know the figure for Bengal – 65. Twelve are being rolled out every year.
My second question – How many fast track courts have been set up since that dastardly incident to now in the last 24 months? I will give you the number for Bengal since that disastrous day – 45. Our target is to set up 88.
My third question is – Are you considering setting up a model, like we do in Bengal, like Aatmaraksha where young girls across executives and juniors are trained how to handle these difficult situations.
These are my three questions, direct questions to the Home Minister, because what we heard today from the Home Minister:
a. Was a photocopy of the FIR and
b. That Uber is banned or will be banned.
Let’s look at the bigger picture to provide, Sir, actual happenings. Today I am happy to state all the statistics and whatever little awards we are getting. My city Kolkata is the safest city in the last two years with regards to these crimes.

TMC and Opposition walk out in RS on black money. Here is why

Trinamool, along with other Opposition parties, today walked out of the Rajya Sabha expressing dissatisfaction with the government's reply on the black money issue.
“We heard the Finance Minister who is a good orator – he can even sell a refrigerator to an Eskimo. However, his reply is a summary of what appeared in the media on Black Money in the last four months. Nothing new.
Our main contention remains that the BJP made big promises of bringing back Black Money within 100 days before elections. This was a hoax. 180 days, nothing substantial has happened. They have no intention of bringing back black money.
This is a debate much beyond black money and the reason my party the Trinamool Congress has been in the forefront of the movement is because we believe black money leads to money power; money power leads to muscle power. Muscle power and money power together is a toxic combination in a Parliamentary democracy.”

Govt must make the names of black money account holders public: Sudip Banerjee in LS

Leader of the party in Lok Sabha, Sudip Bandyopadhyay, today criticised the BJP for failing on its promise to bring back black money to India.

Replying to a few comments made by members of the BJP, he said, “Mamata Banerjee is more popular in Bengal than Mr Modi is in Gujarat.”
“The Prime Minister is either on foreign trips or campaigning for election rallies. The PM should apologise to the Nation for making false promises,” he said.
Mr Badyopadhyay added, “The Govt said they will bring back black money in 100 days. The Govt has completed 180 days in power. We demand that the PM make public the names of account holders of black money.”
“Major Opposition parties came together and protested unitedly. We demanded this issue to be raised in the House,” Sudip Banerjee said. He added that If the government is serious about black money, the party will wholeheartedly support the initiative.
Full transcript of his speech:
Sir, it pained me much and  I was deeply disappointed after hearing the ruling party's main speaker which gave the indication that they are not actually interested to go into the details of the subject of the debate.
The question is very simple. The Prime Minister said, “We will bring back Black Money back to India. If we bring back Black Money each citizen can get Rs 15 to 20 lakhs each” during the pre-poll rallies in 2014. How many times did he say this at different rallies? Record says 152 times. The same speech has been delivered throughout the country to impress the young generation. The youth – of the age group of 20 to 25 years – according to my assessment, were thoroughly impressed and they voted for Modi.
He got the votes and came to the power up to this level. If he is for bringing back the Black Money, we,  the Opposition here, will support any rule, any act you want to make in floor of the House.
Sir, I want to mention very categorically what our demands are. This is a very serious national issue. We have seen most of the major Opposition political parties came together and we protested unitedly so that this issue is discussed with all priority. And it took 48 hours to initiate discussion in Lok Sabha. We have some positive demand.
(i) Let Modi ji put all the names of those who have their Black Money abroad in the public domain immediately.
(ii) Let Modi ji fulfill the promise to bring back Black Money within 100 days. We are prepared to extend our full support without any hesitation.
(iii) Deposit Rs 15 to 20 lakh which he committed to the bank accounts everywhere throughout the country.
(iv) The government has completed 180 days in power. That means 80 days over and above the deadline have passed.
Modi ji is an NRI Prime Minister. He has gone abroad eight times in six months. This debate could have taken place on the first day itself, Modi ji after his speech on the floor of the House could have flown to Jharkhand and then to Nepal. So, the Prime Minister must issue an apology on the floor of the House as he misguided the young generation as well as the whole country by making untrue statements before election.
I have highest personal regards for Mr Jaitley. It does not befit him to make the comments he made few days ago about Mamata Banerjee on Twitter.
Anurag Thakur is intending to become a minister and to trying to satisfy Modi ji, but he cannot make it. During a debate on black money, he was speaking on Sarada. If allowed, we are ready to discuss the Sarada issue. Let him give a notice properly and let the Speaker allow a debate. You should not forget that Sarada owner was not arrested by the CBI but by the Mamata Banerjee Government from the Kashmir boarder and he was taken back to Kolkata custody.
Sir, I want to tell you this Government secured 31% votes; 69% Indians did not vote for BJP. Ruling party may make so many commitments. They can also give many colorful assurances in the election manifesto. Those must be fulfilled. But at least announcements like 'We will bring back black money in 100 days' should not be made.
I think I know when Jaitley ji will speak he may say that because of the double taxation avoidance agreements signed with Switzerland, Germany and France, government cannot bring back black money.  Kharge ji said that you knew it before coming to power and it is nothing new. Knowing fully well about the agreement why did you make this promise and commitment?
The government misled the nation, it misled common people, it misled the voters and it misled the young generation of the country as such.
Sir, there are more than 50,0000 black money accounts as per Ramdev ji. He had supported BJP Government in the last election. Today is the completion of six months in power for this Government. The BJP claims 500 billion dollars are stashed abroad. According to Advani ji it is 400 billion USD. We want to know in the 180 days how much money has the government brought back?
Even so I came to know just now, I don't know if it is true or false, but I have been told by some sources that they are not able to bring back the black money back in such a short time. I am categorically saying that I have heard that the PMO has received such type of information before this debate started.
So, Sir, it is very clear and categorical appeal to this Government not to dilute our demands, be positive to the approach, be transparent in the steps you are taking. Had the government been able to fulfill its promise, it would not have been so panic-stricken. So they will have to either fulfill the promises or apologise to the nation for making such untrue statements.
Sir, as a major ruling party BJP uttered few names while delivering their observations, mentioning names of other members of Rajya Sabha from our Trinamool party. Those comments must be expunged because it falls under the rules, the name of the other House cannot be taken up.
Trinamool Congress has the courage. With the permission of the Speaker, I would like to tell one thing to Mr Anurag Thakur. Ms Mamata Banerjee is the Chief Minister who is more popular in her own state than Narendra Modi is popular in Gujarat. If he has 28 Parliament seats we have 42 Parliament seats. If he has got 24 seats we have got 34 seats and in the next 2016 Assembly elections if Mamata Banerjee will get more than 200 Assembly seats. So don't try to challenge the West Bengal Chief Minister's credibility and honesty. The steps which she has taken are pro-people steps; people of Bengal are with her and we will show it in future that Mamata Banerjee ke saath jo takrayenge, chur chur hojaenge. Yeh baat yaad rakhna.
I am grateful to Congress party, Sonia ji in particular that when we started agitating on this black money issue, Indian National Congress extended their full support. Mulayam ji and JD(U) also extended their support. In future also, we hope the Opposition will be united in exposing the false promises made by BJP.

You are not delivering on a single promise: Derek O`Brien tells BJP in RS

AITC MP and Chief Whip in Rajya Sabha, Derek O'Brien today criticised the Centre for failing to fulfill its promises on bringing back black money. He said that the BJP is only great at advertising campaigns, not in fulfilling promises.
Mr O'Brien laid a note from the PMO on the table of the House which said, “The arrangements in place do not reveal any intention to retrieve black money”.
He said that BJP made a promise of bringing black money back within 100 days and even after 180 days they have done nothing.
The full transcript of his speech:
This is a debate much beyond black money and the reason my party the Trinamool Congress has been in the forefront of the movement is because we believe black money leads to money power; money power leads to muscle power. Muscle power and money power together is a toxic combination in a Parliamentary democracy.
Six months ago to the date there was this multi-billion dollar advertising campaign for a product, I am not objecting to that, the product was called BJP the Bharitya Janta Product. They ran this campaign and it is their prerogative to run it and they made certain promises in those campaigns.
But before that people had also made more promises. Like the Hon'ble LK Advani ji had made a statement on the floor of the House there saying there were 29 lakh crore and the Government will disclose 900 names. But bless Advani ji, no one takes him seriously there also, so leave that aside.
The Hon'ble Venkaiah ji made a speech here on August 13, 2012 and I quote him: “The names of the foreign account holders will be made public and I demand a time bound assurance from the Government.” But Venkaiah Ji is also an honourable man, so no one would take him very seriously.
The Prime Minister, now Prime Minister, that time chief campaigner… Someone told me there's confusion, whether it's the PM or the BM, after I tell you this story you will know why, what is BM.
Promises were made then, 180 days are over now, now they have called us for a Short Duration discussion. I am not in the least interested in a Short Duration discussion, because today they will have a Short Duration discussion and tomorrow it will be forgotten. We will not forget, the country will not forget.
And the gentlemen who spoke on behalf of the BJP – now I am beginning to wonder why they did not make him the Chief Minister prospective of the State – he promised in his speech, so I presume it is the BJP's position that in hundred days they could not bring it back.
Sir, I have accessed through the media a note from the Prime Minister's office dated September 10, 2014. Sir the note is here and to quote the most important part from the note: “It is mentioned the arrangements in place do not reveal any intention to retrieve the black money.”
This is not a note from the Trinamool Congress; this is from the PMO in September. My direct charge to the BJP and the Finance Minister is that tell me this note is false, tell me this is a fake note and I will sit down.
This is our first charge; you have no intention of bringing this money back, your own PMO says that. That is why you are no more PM. You are now BM; you are a bluff master. You are a great advertisement campaigner you are not delivering on a single promise. With the permission of the Chair I will lay it.
Anyone who makes a promise and does not deliver is a bluff master. I will say it again and I will say it again. Desh ko gumrah kiya.
Next point Sir. BJP ne bola, that you have International agreements, and because of these International agreements BJP said you cannot bring this money back.
Do not hide behind this bilateral agreements – the person from the BJP is trying to convince me because we want black money to come back the petrol and diesel prices are going up, this kind of logic. Please read from page 66 of the White paper  in May 2012 which you are now parroting as your new one.
I will only quote, the then Prime Minister is here, two lines. This is about the repatriation of the black money; I am no friend of the Congress as you know. “The only exception is the provision under the United Nations Convention against Corruption where undisclosed assets representing corruption money can be ceased and repatriated.”
So our demand is to please give those names because if you do not give those names then you are hiding behind the cloud.
Now the next point, there is one Herve Falciani, he has gone on record in the Indian media, he is willing and I quote, “He has only given out 1% of the original data, he still has 99% of the original data,” and “if India asks tomorrow, we will send a proposal tomorrow”.
What is holding this Government back to give out those names, because I will tell you he says this one, one week after he says this he quotes, “Prime Minister Modi made a strong pitch at the G20 Summit in Brisbane. For close coordination amongst nations, in transparency and efforts to receive the black money.”
So my charge is if there is a public document made by the whistle blower what is holding this Government back to bring this money back? I can't understand one good reason why they do not want to bring this money back.
Sir, this is not only because what is happening here, you yourself have admitted today on the floor of the House that real estate and stock market has gone up. Now here is my last proposition and then I will finish.
How does this work? This works like this. The unaccounted for money is sent through Hawala. After it goes to Hawala it reaches tax havens. After tax havens they reach the FII route. In the FII routes there are participatory notes. What is your Government's policy on participatory notes?
The SEBI wants to cancel participatory notes. What they couldn't do, you are talking and still can't do. Cancel participatory notes. Why, because when this money comes back, it is used for real estate, for the stock exchange, and it is also used to fund advertising big election promises are made. Big billions of dollars are spent and those are very easy promises you make promises and in true BJP style you break promises.

Trinamool Youth Congress to launch statewide campaign against Centre

Trinamool Congress will start a state-wide programme to protest against the Centre's negligent attitude towards Bengal and the politics of vindictiveness. The youth wing of the party will start reaching out to people at block level after the December 1 rally at Shahid Minar.
A meeting was held at Trinamool Bhavan on Tuesday where the party Secertary General Mr Partha Chatterjee along with the party State President Mr Subrata Bakshi and senior leader Mr Tapas Roy met the leaders of the Youth wing to take stock of the preparations of December 1 rally.
The party Secretary General said that the Trinamool Youth Congress will campaign at block-level bringing up issue like black money and Centre depriving Bengal financially.

WB CM invites industrialists for a tourism-development trip to Sunderbans

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has invited a host of industrialists to accompany her to Sunderbans on 9 and 10 December.
The trip is aimed at showcasing the tourism potential of the island.
The industrialists had been part of the delegation that had gone to Singapore along with Miss Banerjee as well as accompanied her during her Gangasagar trip.
To start with, the delegation will halt at Jharkhali, wherein chief minister will hold a meeting with the industrialists.
The next day, the team will accompany Ms Banerjee on a boat to various islands of the southern fringes of Sunderbans.
In an attempt to showcase the tourism potential of the beaches of Bengal, Ms Banerjee took up an initiative to visit the places along with industrialists and discuss possible investment opportunities for improving infrastructure. Following which, the first tourism-development trip began with Gangasagar in October.
In the second part of her trip, Ms Banerjee will visit Jharkhali along with industrialists.

On 8 December, Ms Banerjee is scheduled to reach Phultali where a government programme has been organised.  On the next day, she will join industrialists at Jharkhali and on the next day visit some of the islands of Sunderbans.
