Italy keen on collaborating with Bangla on jewellery, tourism

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s visit to Milan in September 2018 culminated in a series of direct interactions with diverse Italian regional business consortia and individual business-owners.

As a result, a 19-member delegation from the country came to the fifth Bengal Global Business Summit (BGBS), which showed a keen interest in investing in sectors like jewellery, tourism, real estate, dairy products, plastics, business services, freight forwarding, building materials and construction.

Among these, jewellery and tourism have a lot of potential, felt representatives from Italy as well as Bangla.

Handcrafted jewellery is a tradition as much in Italy as in India, including in Bangla. Taking advantage of this, the Italian delegation has proposed collaboration on jewellery designing and manufacturing.

The head of marketing of Il Tari, a major international goldsmith centre in Marcianise in the province of Caserta, said that the centre is open to collaborations with designers and jewellery houses in the State.

The president of Confindustria Caserta, a chamber of commerce from the province, stated that since Bangla has a booming real estate environment, he was looking to collaborate with developers in the sector, primarily focusing on tourism.

He said that most people in India and the rest of the world identify Italy with well-established tourist spots like Rome, Milan, Venice, Sicily, Pompeii, Vatican and Pisa but the relatively unknown provinces have much to offer by way of tourism as well. So, tourism was a prime focus area for him to be here.

10,000 e-rickshaws for rural areas

To enable employment generation, the State Government has decided to give 10,000 e-rickshaws to rural youths. Thirty per cent of the cost of a vehicle would be borne by the government, with the rest to be given by the owner.

This project is the initiative of the State Self-Help and Self-Employment Department, as part of the Swami Vivekananda Swanirbhar Karmasansthan Prakalpa.

Under the scheme, meant for unemployed youths from the scheduled caste and minority communities, and for women, 30 per cent subsidy, up to a maximum Rs 1.5 lakh for individuals and Rs 3.5 lakh for groups (self-help groups, etc.), is given for starting a new venture.

It is under this provision of the scheme that the e-rickshaw project has been launched. The department has held meetings with various e-rickshaw manufacturers to ensure that there is no problem with the supply.

Though 10,000 e-rickshaws would be arranged initially, the project would be expanded in the future.

State Govt to collaborate with Finland for waste-to-energy project

The State Power and Non-Conventional Energy Sources Department is taking a serious step forward in considering taking technological assistance from Finland to create energy from waste.

Representatives from the Finnish delegation which attended the recent Bengal Global Business Summit discussed their proposal with the Power Department. It may be mentioned in this context that Finland utilises 99 per cent of its waste for producing energy.

A senior official of the department said that it will be sending a detailed proposal on the subject to the chief minister, on the basis of which more meetings will follow.

It may be mentioned that the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) has procured 20 acres from the New Town Kolkata Development Authority (NKDA) at Chapna Mouza in Rajarhat. Fourteen acres of land will be used for dumping waste while the rest six acres will be utilised for a waste-to-energy project.

KMC introduces 100 more battery-operated garbage collection carts

The Kolkata Municipal Corporation has introduced 100 more battery-operated carts for garbage collection on the streets of the city.

Ever since they were introduced in Kolkata a few years ago as part of the Clean City Green City mission, there has been a marked improvement in garbage collection. Wherever required, garbage collection has now been introduced multiple times a day.

There are currently 120 such vans for garbage collection, for which purpose now 100 more have been added. Soon, all handcarts will be replaced by battery-operated carts.

Being battery operated (which have to be charged from time to time), the carts do not cause any pollution.

Along with the 100 carts, 45 mini-trucks have also been introduced for collection of garbage from along major streets, where the small and slow battery-operated carts cannot be operated.

KMC to develop app to track hoardings

The Kolkata Municipal Corporation will develop an app to keep track of the hoardings put up across the city, said the mayor recently.

The main monitor for tracking the hoardings will be at the chamber of the chief manager of the KMC. A census of hoardings will be held and the illegal ones will be removed, he said.

Residents will be able to track the hoardings by downloading the app and in case they have any doubt they can contact the civic authorities immediately.

The civic body will also ask advertising firms to shift to LED or canvas hoardings as those made out of flex cause visual pollution and can lead to major accidents when they collapse during storms.

The mayor also said that the KMC will remove the hoardings that have been put up in front of heritage structures.

The KMC is also considering developing a similar app to track the parking of vehicles in the fee parking zones in the city.

KMC unveils online archive about Kolkata & its history

The mayor of Kolkata inaugurated the website of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation’s (KMC) archive on January 26. The website has been named www.kmcarchive.in.

While unveiling the website, the mayor also said that the KMC is the only municipal corporation in the country to have an archive of its own.

The website will be of immense benefit to those who want to pursue research activities about Kolkata and how it has evolved through the passage of time. It contains information about the mayors of the city since the civic body’s inception, their works for the development of the city, the similarity between the residences of the United Kingdom and Kolkata, how the city was founded and so on.

The website lists the documents available with the KMC. If somebody wants to have detailed information about any of those, the person would have to write an e-mail to kmcarchives@gmail.com, disclosing the purpose and whether the request is from a researcher or an individual, official or organisation, and any other relevant details. The full document(s) will be sent by mail by the municipal secretary.

The archive section of the KMC has set a target of uploading information about nearly one lakh subjects related to Kolkata on the website.

It may be mentioned that people from different parts of the world have a curiosity about Kolkata’s history and heritage. There have been instances of researchers from Boston, Cambridge, Oxford and other universities coming to the civic body’s archive section, seeking information about the city. Now they need not come physically, making their efforts much easier.

The archive of the KMC had started its journey on February 3, 2015. It has been named after scholar Amol Home, the first editor of the Calcutta Municipal Gazette, the publication of which started on November 15, 1924.

The archive contains documents, charts, maps, drawings and paintings of early Kolkata (or Calcutta, as it was then called), various articles like history books on Kolkata, photographs of persons and places of interest, newspapers, street lists (1889 – 2014), civic receptions, list of heritage buildings, etc.

BJP only spreads lies: Mamata Banerjee

Bangla Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee today addressed a press conference at Press Club of India in New Delhi. Here are some highlights of the press meet

On internal conflicts within the grand alliance

There may be local compulsions. These may vary from State to State. Keeping this in mind, we have decided, even if we fight at State level, we must go for a pre-poll alliance at national level, so that we can stake claim to form the government after elections.

On alliance in Bengal

In yesterday’s meeting senior leaders of several parties were present. We have decided we will form a pre-poll alliance at national level. If some parties do not want to take a stand, it is up to them. We respect that.

In our State, CPI(M) and Congress will contest against us. We have been fighting against them. We are not going to contest against Congress in Madhya Pradesh or Rajasthan, are we? In Bengal we have the strong organisation. In Delhi, AAP has the strength.

People of the country are very intelligent. They know who can win the election against BJP. Leave it to the people. Amit Shah and BJP must go out. This is in national interest. This is worse than emergency. All the sections of the society must unite today.

I am ready to sacrifice everything to prevent Modi-Shah from coming back to power. We have to protect the unity and integrity of the country. They have sold the country.

The situation in my State is different. The situation in UP is different. The situation in Andhra is different. It is a different situation in Delhi. It depends on the State.

BJP also has state-wise strategy to win the election

Our strategy is crystal-clear. We want to defeat the BJP. Their expiry date is over.

Allegations of BJP not being allowed to do rallies in Bangla

Their National President addressed a rally just two days after he was discharged from hospital. He was suffering from swine-flu. Why are they telling lies? 4-5 Chief Ministers, 10-12 Union Ministers addressed rallies and they are saying we are not allowing them? Why are they afraid.

On the Common Minimum Programme for Grand Alliance

I cannot comment on this now. They have been given the charge to prepare the draft. Let them prepare it. Then we will decide.

On the anti-industry perception about Bengal

This is absolutely wrong. We love both industry and agriculture. They are like two sisters. The nation cannot progress without either of the two.

On the terror attack in Pulwama

This is a shocking incident. We condemn this attack. Our express our solidarity with the jawans. The government must take appropriate action.

On chit funds

Chit funds started in the 1980s during the Left regime. It was during Trinamool tenure that the owner of Saradha was arrested. West Bengal Government formed a SIT and also set up the Shyamal Sen Commission to return Rs 300 crore to depositors. After the investigation went to the CBI, the State Government did not have any role to play in returning the money. CBI has already seized and sold many properties and assets belonging to the companies. That money should be returned immediately.

Why is the Centre harassing us? If we go to an event and someone clicks a photo with us, can we take the responsibility. The Sahara sponsored the Indian Cricket team. Should action be taken against the latter? The Deputy CM of Assam also took money from chit funds. But all is forgiven since he joined the BJP? Is this right?

All CBI officers are not bad. We respect them. We do not differentiate between state and central officers. But, Modi-Shah and NSA Chief Doval calls them to their office and orders them ‘do something against these leaders’. And they have to do it. This is BJP propaganda and politics of vindictive.

On the terror attack in Kashmir

We do not like to politick on matters of national interest. Any attack on the jawans of our country is sad and tragic. We are with the government on this matter, even if they speak against us.

On the Prime Ministerial candidate of the Opposition

This is a fight of one versus hundred.

On Citizenship Amendment Bill

You are sitting in Delhi. You do not have any idea about the ground realities. Why did the Bill lapse? Go to the north-eastern States. They are celebrating. BJP was banking on 25 seats in the north-east. Those are also gone.

We respect people of all castes, creed, religion, and communities. A true leader works for all, not someone who discriminates.

On BJP’s arrogance

BJP has become arrogant. They only indulge in lies. Even Subramanyan Swamy is tweeting that two media channels are in BJP’s pockets. I am not saying this. A BJP MP is saying this.

On TRS and BJD

K Chandrasekhar Rao is the Chief Minister of Telangana. Naveen Patnaik is the Chief Minister of Odisha. We have regards for both.

On sting operations

I do not want to comment on sting operations. BJP conducts these operations in lieu of money. They cannot provide roti-kapda-makan and are busy conducting stings.

On the meeting with the President of India

It was a courtesy visit.

On Rafale scam

Rafale is a big scam. Demonetisation was a big scam. The truth will come out after this government goes out of power. The BJP has destroyed all the institutions.

On future course of action

We have to save the country, not ourselves. People of the country will decide.
