Redeeming a pledge she made years back, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday returned 9,117 land records to farmers and compensated 800 peasants from whom land had been taken against their will for the Tata Motors’ Nano project.
Amid chants and songs eulogising the state and the chief minister, thousands watched as Didi personally handed out the documents to many of the farmers who responded with warm smiles and touched her feet in gratitude at the Singur Diwas venue here at Sanapara.
It was the same spot of the Durgapur Expressway where Banerjee had held a 16-day sit-in protest in 2008. Intellectuals and activists were also present.

Remembering the Singur Andolan
I am reminded of Hajar Churasir Maa – Mahashweta Devi on this joyous occasion. Had Mahashweta Devi been alive, she would have been very happy.
Singur andolan began in 2006 before Durga Puja. We still remember that midnight torture at BD office. Inhuman torture was carried out on women on 2 December, 2006. We were stopped our way here that day.
I was ready to sacrifice my life but I was determined to establish democracy. We thank Gopal Gandhi, who was the Governor in 2006, for mediating in the Singur case.
I salute the ‘unwilling’ farmers who stood up against the might of the govt back then. Historic struggles are never lost in time.
No forcible acquisition of land
This is a big victory. We have delivered on our promise of returning land. This is people’s victory. Soil is a big asset for humanity. This soil is purer than gold.
This land belonged to farmers. It will remain with them. If the villages are protected only then cities will survive. We will never deprive anyone of their rights. We are against forcible land acquisition. Bengal will become a model in the world. We believe actions speak louder than words. We will protect agriculture. We will build industry.
Facilities for farmers
There were 4 deep tube-wells which were demolished. We are setting up check dams and small tube wells for irrigation here. Bargadars are also getting compensation for land.
Soil testing is going on. All fertilisers for making this land fertile and cultivable will be provided. We will provide Rs 10000 to all farmer families to aid them in farming.
A Customs Hiring Centre will be set up in Singur to help farmers get loans. A training and demonstration centre for farmers will be set up here.
Survey and demarcation of 623 acres of land out of 997 acres is complete. We have set up Kisan Mandi, degree college, trauma centre in Singur.
Industry and Agriculture will coexist
There is no competition between industry and agriculture. Both will coexist. We want industry. We have been organising Bengal Global Business Summit for three years. We have a land bank and a land use policy. Had all procedures been followed Tata babus would have been able to set up industry.
Invitation to investors
We have 1000 acres of land in Goaltore. Whoever wants to set up automobile unit can approach us. We have land in Kharagpur, Panagarh. Our message is clear. We want more IT and manufacturing industries in Bengal.
কৃষি-শিল্প একে অপরের পরিপূরকঃ মমতা বন্দ্যোপাধ্যায়
বুধবার মুখ্যমন্ত্রী মমতা বন্দ্যোপাধ্যায় সিঙ্গুর দিবসের সভামঞ্চ থেকে তাঁর দেওয়া কথা রাখলেন। ৮০০ জন কৃষকের হাতে চেক ও ৯১১৭ জনকে জমির পরচা ফেরত দেওয়া হল।
সিঙ্গুর দিবসের এই অনুষ্ঠানে সভামঞ্চ থেকে সকলের হাতে চেক তুলে দিলেন মুখ্যমন্ত্রী। স্লোগান ও গানে গানে মুখরিত হয়ে রইল সভা মঞ্চ।
২০০৮ সালে দুর্গাপুর এক্সপ্রেসওয়েতে যেখানে মমতা বন্দ্যোপাধ্যায় ১৬ দিনের আন্দলন করেছিলেন সেখানেই তৈরি হয়েছিল সভামঞ্চটি। বুদ্ধিজীবীসহ সকল কর্মীরা সেখানে উপস্থিত ছিলেন।
আজকের এই বিশাল সভায় মুখ্যমন্ত্রী যে পাঁচটি বিষয় বলেছেনঃ
ঐতিহাসিক সিঙ্গুর আন্দোলন স্মরণ
সিঙ্গুর, নেতাই ও নন্দীগ্রামের সকল শহীদদের শ্রদ্ধা নিবেদন করে মুখ্যমন্ত্রী বলেন, সিঙ্গুর আন্দোলনের সময় আমরা মানুষের সমর্থন ও সহযোগিতা পেয়েছিলাম। আজকের এই আনন্দের দিনে আমি ‘হাজার চুরাশির মা’ মহাশ্বেতা দেবীকে স্মরণ করছি। উনি বেঁচে থাকলে আজ খুব খুশি হতেন। ২০০৬ সালে দুর্গা পুজোর আগে শুরু হয়েছিল সিঙ্গুর আন্দোলন। সেদিনের মাঝরাতে বি ডি ও অফিসের অত্যাচারের কথা আমি এখনও ভুলিনি। ২০০৬ সালের ২ সেপ্টেম্বর মহিলাদের ওপর মর্মান্তিক অত্যাচার করা হয়েছিল।
সেদিন গণতন্ত্র প্রতিষ্ঠা করার জন্য আমি নিজের জীবন উৎসর্গ করতে প্রস্তুত ছিলাম।
২০০৬ সালে তৎকালীন রাজ্যপাল গোপাল কৃষ্ণ গান্ধিকে আমি ধন্যবাদ জানাই।
যেসব অনিচ্ছুক কৃষকরা সেদিন সরকারের কাজের প্রতিবাদ করেছিলেন তাদের আমি স্যালুট জানাই।
জোর করে জমি অধিগ্রহণ নয়
এটা মানুষের জয়। আমরা যা কথা দিয়েছিলাম তা আমরা রেখেছি। এই জমি কৃষকদের, এটা তাদেরই থাকবে। গ্রাম বাঁচলে তবেই শহর রক্ষা পাবে। আমরা কাউকে তাদের অধিকার থেকে বঞ্চিত করতে পারি না। বাংলা একদিন সমগ্র বিশ্বের কাছে মডেলে পরিণত হবে। কথার চেয়ে কাজে আমরা বেশি বিশ্বাসী। আমরা কৃষিকেও রক্ষা করব। শিল্পও তৈরি করব।
কৃষকদের জন্য সুবিধা
সিঙ্গুরে সেচের জন্য চেক বাঁধ এবং ছোট নলকূপ স্থাপনকরা হবে। মাটি পরীক্ষার কাজ চলছে। জমি চাষযোগ্য করার জন্য প্রয়োজনীয় সার ও যন্ত্রপাতি সরবরাহ করা হবে। চাষ করার জন্য আমরা কৃষকদের ১০০০০ টাকা দেব। কৃষকরা যাতে ঋণ পেতে পারে সেজন্য একটি Customs Hiring Centre সিঙ্গুরে স্থাপন করা হবে। বর্গাদাররাও জমির জন্য ক্ষতিপূরণ পাচ্ছেন। ৯৭৭ একর জমির মধ্যে ৬২৩ একর জমি সমীক্ষার কাজ সম্পূর্ণ হয়ে গেছে। আমরা সিঙ্গুরে কিষাণ মান্ডি, ডিগ্রী কলেজ, ট্রমা সেন্টার স্থাপন করেছি। সিঙ্গুরে আমরা কৃষকদের জন্য একটি স্মারক তৈরি করব।
কৃষি-শিল্প পরিপূরক
শিল্প ও কৃষির মধ্যে কোন প্রতিযোগিতা নয়। ওরা একে অপরের পরিপূরক। গত তিন বছর ধরে আমরা বেঙ্গল গ্লোবাল বিজনেস সামিটের আয়োজন করছি।
আমাদের ল্যান্ড ব্যাংক ও ল্যান্ড পলিসি আছে। টাটা, বি এম ডবলু যে কেউ এখানে শিল্প করতে পারেন।
বিনিয়োগকারীদের আহ্বান
গোয়তোড়ে আমাদের ১০০০ একর জমি আছে। যারা অটোমোবাইল কারখানা তৈরি করতে চান তারা আমাদের কাছে প্রস্তাব নিয়ে আসতে পারেন। খড়গপুর,পানাগড়েও আমাদের জমি আছে। আমাদের বার্তা স্পষ্ট। আমরা বাংলায় আরো আইটি এবং উত্পাদন শিল্প চাই।
