There will be no NRC,” stated Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in Siliguri while inaugurating a Kali Puja on Thursday.

Bangla ahead in jobs for engineering graduates

Bangla is ahead of other States in terms of the percentage of engineering students getting jobs after graduating, according to the latest AICTE data. All India Council for Technical Education is the body responsible for overseeing technical education across the country.

The percentage was 51.45 (27,675 got jobs on passing out of 53,791) in financial year (FY) 2018-19. This percentage, it may be noted, has been rising steadily over the last couple of years, whereas it was 48.46% (26,603 out of 54,897) in FY 2017-18, in FY 2016-17, it was 43.3% (24,914 out of 57,544).

This is much higher than in States like Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Madhya Pradesh, etc, where many more students enrol but lesser percentages get jobs.

For example, in Gujarat, out of the between 90,000 and one lakh who took admission in 2018-19, only 24,636 got jobs. In Uttar Pradesh, out of around 1.83 lakh, about 68,000 got jobs. In Tamil Nadu, out of 2.5 lakh, 1,81,721 got jobs.

These numbers point to the much better quality of engineering education in Bangla. After all, some of the best institutions and universities in the country are located here.

No detention centre to come up in Bengal: Mamata Banerjee

Bangla Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday ruled out any possibility of detention centres coming up in West Bengal on the lines of such camps for keeping illegal foreigners being set up in states like Assam and Karnataka.

“I say with all responsibility in the presence of all government officers that we have no plans to undertake any NRC (National Register for Citizens) exercise in our state.
“So the question of constructing any detention camp does not arise. It can only come up if we construct it,” she said addressing an administrative meeting at Uttarkanya – the North Bengal branch secretariat of the state government near Siliguri.

The Chief Minister said the NRC exercise could be undertaken in Assam as it was part of the Assam accord, 1985.

The CM said the NRC would not happen in Bengal as “we run the government here”.
“They could carry out such an exercise in Assam, as the matter was a part of the Assam Accord of 1985, and because the state has a BJP government. In this state, we run the government.”
She also said the CAB, if passed, would render people as foreigners for six years. “So Indians, and particularly Bengalis, will become foreigners for six years. What will you do with such people for six years? And then, what will happen?” she said.
