Real-time monitoring of crowds at Ganga Sagar Mela this year
In order to ensure the safety and security of the lakhs of pilgrims who turn up at the Ganga Sagar Mela on Sagar Island in South 24 Parganas district on the occasion of Makar Sankranti every year, the district administration has decided to introduce a real-time monitoring system using surveillance cameras. In 2018, pilgrims are expected to start going to Ganga Sagar from January 10 onwards.
Using this system, all senior administrative and police officers will be able to watch live footages of all the transit and other crucial points on their mobile phones. This will ensure that officers get better in crowd management.
Though surveillance cameras are used every year to get crowd footages, this time, a real-time monitoring system would be introduced. To make it effective, the district authority has decided to increase the total number of surveillance cameras.
To make the project successful, the district administration has decided to turn all the transit points into Wi-Fi zones so that officers do not face any problem in getting internet connection on their phones, for the monitoring system to function.
After reaching the transit points in the mainland, pilgrims need to cross the Muriganga river in vessels to reach the Sagar Island. After crossing the river, they need to take a bus or a car to reach the confluence of the river Ganga.
Since pilgrims need to change their mode of transport at least twice en oute Sagar Island and back, crowd management is an important task for the administration. Moreover, vessel services remain suspended for sometime during low tide, with lakhs of pilgrims waiting on both sides to cross the river, and this makes the task tougher.
In such a situation, the administration every year needs to take necessary steps to ensure safety and security of pilgrims. Going a step ahead this time, the administration is developing a real-time monitoring system to keep a round-the-clock tab on the situation at the transit and other crucial points.
Another safety measure that that the administration has decided to take is to increase the number of halting zones for pilgrims to nine – three on the mainland and six on the island. Instead of hurrying to gather near the jetties, that increases the chances of untoward incidents, pilgrims can take rest and wait for their turn before catching a vessel.

দক্ষিণ ২৪ পরগনার সাগর দ্বীপে প্রতি বছর মকর সংক্রান্তিতে আসেন লক্ষ লক্ষ পুন্যার্থি। সেই সকল পুন্যার্থিদের সুরক্ষার্থে এবছর মেলায় জেলা প্রশাসন ব্যবহার করবে রিয়েল টাইম মনিটারিং পদ্ধতি। এই পদ্ধতিতে সাহায্য করবে সার্ভেইল্যান্স ক্যামেরা।
এই পদ্ধতি ব্যবহার করে সকল প্রশাসনিক ও পুলিশ আধিকারিকরা গঙ্গাসাগর মেলার প্রতিটি জায়গার অবস্থা প্রত্যক্ষ করতে পারবেন নিজেদের মোবাইলে। এর মাধ্যমে সুষ্ঠুভাবে মেলা পরিচালনা ও ভিড় সামলানোতে আরও সুবিধা হবে।
সার্ভেইল্যান্স ক্যামেরা প্রতি বছর ব্যবহৃত হয়। এবছর তাঁর সঙ্গে যুক্ত হবে রিয়েল টাইম মনিটারিং পদ্ধতি। রিয়েল টাইম মনিটারিং পদ্ধতি আরও ভালো করতে এবার সার্ভেইল্যান্স ক্যামেরার সংখ্যা আগের থেকে বাড়ানো হচ্ছে। প্রতিটি ট্রান্সিট পয়েন্টে থাকছে ওয়াই ফাই পরিষেবা। যাতে আধিকারিকদের সার্ভেলিয়েন্স ক্যামেরার মাধ্যমে প্রাপ্ত ফুটেজ সবসময় মোবাইলে পেতে কোনও অসুবিধা না হয়।
ট্রান্সিট পয়েন্ট পৌঁছে পুন্যার্থিরা ভেসেলে করে মুড়িগঙ্গা নদী পেরিয়ে সাগরদ্বীপ যায়। এই নদী পাড় হয়ে দর্শনার্থীদের বাস বা গাড়ি নিতে হয় গঙ্গার মোহনা যেতে। যেহেতু সাগরদ্বীপে পৌঁছতে এতগুলো যানবাহন বদলাতে হয়, প্রশাসনের একটি গুরুত্বপূর্ণ দায়িত্ব ভিড় সামলানোর। ভাঁটার জন্য মাঝে বহু সময় ভেসেল পরিষেবা ব্যহত থাকে, সেই সময় নদীর দু’পাড়ে জমা হয় প্রচুর মানুষ।
এবছর মোট নটি যাত্রী প্রতীক্ষালয় তৈরী করা হয়েছে। তিনটি মূল ভূখণ্ডে ও বাকি ৬টি সাগর দ্বীপে।
