Pratima Mondal’s Zero Hour mention on the need for the government to enforce a five-day week for bankers, in view of the high suicide rate among them due to work pressure

Sir, working long hours has many ill effects on health and wellbeing. It is not just that, but it also decreases the overall productivity of a person, and also affects the cognitive ability. The Labour Code enacted by the Government of India has provisionfor four working days a week but the bankers of the nation work six days a week on alternate week ends. The Bank Employees’ Association has been demanding to have five working days. They are ready to compensate for the couple of Saturdays by working extrahours on week days. This is a justified demand. I would request the Government to intervene and look into the matter to make it possible. This will help in bringing positive effects and in bringing down the mental health issues being faced by the bankers in India, which is clearly reflected in the high suicide rate amongst them.
