Kanyashree empowers girls to beat poverty and sit for Madhyamik
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s Kanyashree Scheme is playing a crucial role in lighting the lamp of knowledge in far corners of West Bengal. Consequently, school dropout rates are also going down significantly.
Lack of money had forced Srabani Maity to stop going to school. Thanks to Kanyashree, she has been able to sit for the Madhyamik exams this year.
Similar was the case of Sarada Pramanik of Diamond Harbour: the reason being the death of her father, when she was just four. She said that on completing 18 years she would get Rs 25,000, and so would continue her studies.
According to Firdausi Khatoon, student of Saswati Nahla High School at Chanpabar in Shyampur block of Howrah district, whose father is a labourer at a bakery in Kolkata, the Kanyashree scholarship money is a lot of help for her.
Somnath Dey, the father of Ayanika Dey of Siuri, is currently unemployed. According to her, lack of financial resources had, at one point of time, led her to almost abandon her studies; the Kanyashree Scheme came to her help at the right time.
Sathi Pal is a resident of Satish Chandra Ghosh Lane of Sreerampur. Her father is a labourer at a jute mill. According to her mother, Anima Pal, the scholarship money from Kanyashree Scheme and free books from schools enabled her daughter to go on with her studies; otherwise Sathi would have had to leave her studies.
Adri Chakravarty of Udaynarayanpur in Howrah district is giving Madhyamik exams this year. her father, Uttam Chakravarty, who is a priest by profession said that whatever be the amount of money, its value is immense for poor families. Had it not been for the Kanyashree money, he said, perhaps he would never have been able to let his daughter continue her studies.
Esha Chatterjee of Sreerampur is the first Madhyamik examinee from her family, giving the exams this year. Her father drives rented vehicles. Esha’s mother Pratima Chatterjee said that the opportunities they didn’t get, her daughter got because of the West Bengal Government’s Kanyashree Scheme. She can at least complete her Madhyamik.
Babita Mandal is a Madhyamik examinee of Khanakul in Jairampur. Her father Srikanta Mandal is a labourer. Babita said that Kanyashree has provided opportunities to her to continue her studies. She said that she would continue her studies as far as possible.
The above examples are not stray cases. Till now, 37 lakh girls have come under the Kanyashree Scheme, for a large percentage of whom the scheme is the sole reason for being able to write their Madhyamik exams. Not just helping to continue with their studies, Kanyashree has also helped in preventing their early marriages. The scheme has brought smiles on to the faces of countless families.
কন্যাশ্রীতে ভর করে মাধ্যমিকে বাংলার ছাত্রীরা
মমতা বন্দ্যোপাধ্যায়ের সরকারের ‘কন্যাশ্রী’ প্রকল্প’ এখন রাজ্যের সব প্রান্তে আলো জ্বালছে মেয়েদের শিক্ষা প্রসারে। উল্লেখযোগ্য ভাবে কমছে স্কুলছুটের হার।
টাকার অভাবে স্কুল যাওয়া বন্ধ করতে বাধ্য হয়েছিলেন শ্রাবণী মাইতি। কিন্তু ‘কন্যাশ্রীর’ দৌলতে সিনেমার মতোই পাল্টে গেল ছবিটা। এবারে মাধ্যমিক বসাটাই ছিল যার কাছে এক সময় ছিল মস্ত চ্যালেঞ্জ। কন্যাশ্রীর দৌলতে আর পাঁচ জনের মতোই এ বছর মাধ্যমিকে বসছে সে।
ডায়মন্ড হারবারের সারদা প্রামাণিকের লেখাপড়া চালিয়ে যাওয়ার লড়াইটাও ছিল আরও দুর্লঙ্ঘ। বাবা শ্রীমন্ত প্রামাণিকের মৃত্যুর সময় তার বয়স ছিল চার বছর। তিনি নিজেই বলেন, ’১৮ বছর বয়স হলে ২৫ হাজার টাকা পাব। লেখাপড়া চালিয়ে যাব।’
হাওড়ার শ্যামপুরের চাঁপাবারের শাশ্বতী নহলা উচ্চ বিদ্যালয়ের ছাত্রী ফিরদৌসি খাতুনের বাবা ফরিদুল ইসলাম কলকাতার বেকারির সামান্য দিনমজুর। ফিরদৌসির কথায়, ‘কন্যাশ্রীর টাকা আমার জন্য অনেক।’
সিউড়ির অয়নিকা দে’র বাবা সোমনাথ বর্তমানে বেকার। অয়নিকা মুখ্যমন্ত্রীকে কৃতজ্ঞতা জানিয়ে বলে, ‘অনটনে এক সময় মেয়েটার পড়াশোনাই বন্ধ হওয়ার জোগাড় হয়েছিল। ভাগ্যিস কন্যাশ্রী ছিল।’
শ্রীরামপুর সতীশচন্দ্র ঘোষ লেনের বাসিন্দা সাথী পাল। বাবা সনাতন পাল চটকলের সামান্য শ্রমিক। সাথীর মা অনিমা পালের কথায়, ‘স্কুল থেকে বই পাওয়ায় আর সঙ্গে কন্যাশ্রীর টাকাতেই কষ্ট করে হলেও পড়াটা চালিয়ে যেতে পেরেছে মেয়ে। না হলে হয়তো মাঝপথেই বন্ধ করে দিতে হত লেখাপড়া।’
হাওড়ার উদয়নারায়ণপুরের অদ্রি চক্রবর্তী এবার মাধ্যমিক পরীক্ষা দিচ্ছে। তাঁর বাবা উত্তম চক্রবর্তী (পেশায় পুজারি ব্রাহ্মণ) বলেন, ‘টাকার পরিমাণ যাই হোক না কেন, তার মর্ম গরিব পরিবারগুলি বোঝে। এই সাহায্য না পেলে মেয়ের পড়া চালানোর খরচই হয়তো টানতে পারতাম না।’
শ্রীরামপুরের তাপস চ্যাটার্জি ভাড়ার গাড়ি চালান। তার মেয়ে এষাই এই পরিবার থেকে প্রথম মাধ্যমিক পরীক্ষার্থী। এষার মা প্রতিমা চ্যাটার্জির বক্তব্য, ‘যে সুযোগ আমরা পাইনি, সরকারের কাছ থেকে সেই সুযোগ পাওয়ায় আমার মেয়েটা অন্তত মাধ্যমিক দিতে পারছে।’
খানাকুলের জয়রামপুরের মাধ্যমিক পরীক্ষার্থী ববিতা মণ্ডল, বাবা শ্রীকান্ত মণ্ডল দিনমজুর। ববিতার কথায়, ‘সুযোগ করে দিয়েছে কন্যাশ্রী। যতদূর পারব, লেখাপড়া চালিয়ে যাব আমি। চাকরি করে বাবার পাশে দাঁড়াতে চাই।’
সারদা, লাবণি, ফিরদৌসি, অয়নিকাদের নজিরগুলি বিক্ষিপ্ত নিদর্শন নয়। এখনও পর্যন্ত রাজ্যে প্রায় ৩৭ লাখ ছাত্রী কন্যাশ্রীর আওতায় এসেছে। যার একটি বড় অংশের কাছেই মাধ্যমিক পর্যন্ত লেখাপড়া চালিয়ে যাওয়াটাই এক সময়ে আকাশকুসুম ছিল। কিন্তু সরকারের কন্যাশ্রীর জেরে একদিকে যেমন ছাত্রীদের স্কুলছুটের হার কমানো যাচ্ছে, তেমনই কম বয়েসে বিয়ের প্রবণতাও কমানো যাচ্ছে। সব ধরনের পরিবারের মুখেই ফুটছে হাসি।
