Soon, Kolkata households may receive cooking fuel through pipelines
The Greater Calcutta Gas Supply Corporation Limited (GCGSC) has decided to go for a joint venture with Gas Authority of India Limited (GAIL) to supply natural gas through pipelines in households and small industries in cities and towns.
The initiative will ensure “user-friendly, safe and environment-friendly” supply of fuel. Small industries where coal is still used as fuel in furnaces, will be using natural gas and it will help in reducing pollution.
Dr Amit Mitra, the state Industries and Commerce minister, said: “The Cabinet has given its nod to go ahead with the project in Tuesday’s meeting.” He also said: “The authorities of GAIL had written to us thrice, expressing their interest to ensure supply of “City Gas” in cities and towns of Bengal.
This is the first time in eastern parts of the country where natural gas will be supplied through pipelines for households.

বাড়ি বাড়ি পাইপলাইনে দূষণমুক্ত প্রাকৃতিক গ্যাস সরবরাহ করতে রাষ্ট্রায়ত্ত সংস্থা গেইল-এর সঙ্গে যৌথ উদ্যোগ করছে রাজ্য সরকার।
প্রাথমিকভাবে মোট তিন হাজার কোটি টাকা বিনিয়োগ হবে। রাজ্যের সংস্থা গ্রেটার কলকাতা গ্যাস সাপ্লাই কর্পোরেশনের শেয়ার থাকবে ২৬ শতাংশ। পরিকাঠামো ও সম্পদের ভিত্তিতেই এই অংশীদারিত্ব ধরা হবে। দুই সংস্থা নিজেদের মধ্যে আলোচনার ভিত্তিতেই ‘রোড ম্যাপ’ চূড়ান্ত করবে। পূর্ব ভারতে কলকাতায়ই প্রথম পাইপলাইনের মাধ্যমে গ্যাস সরবরাহ চালু হতে চলেছে।
মঙ্গলবার মুখ্যমন্ত্রী মমতা বন্দ্যোপাধ্যায়ের নেতৃত্বে রাজ্য মন্ত্রীসভার বৈঠকে যৌথ উদ্যোগের বিষয়টি অনুমোদিত হয়েছে। পরে নবান্নে সাংবাদিক সম্মেলনে শিল্প ও অর্থমন্ত্রী অমিত মিত্র বলেন, “তিন হাজার কোটি টাকা বিনিয়োগ দিয়ে প্রকল্প শুরু হবে। বাড়ি বাড়ি ও পরে শিল্পের ক্ষেত্রে প্রাকৃতিক গ্যাস সরবরাহ করা হবে। পরিবেশ বান্ধব এই গ্যাস সবক্ষেত্রেই মানুষের সুবিধা করবে।”
আপাতত কলকাতা ও নিউটাউন, সল্টলেকে পাইপলাইনের কাজ শুরু হবে।
