It is time for President’s Rule at the Centre: Mamata Banerjee
It is time for President’s Rule at the Centre. This was the gist of what Bengal Chief Minister said at a press conference called at Town Hall today, calling on all Opposition to come together to oppose the anti-people policies of the Central Government.
With demonetisation causing havoc all over the country, playing with people’s lives, things have become unbearable. This arbitrary draconian decision has been widely condemned across the country, by well-known economists, both from India and abroad, politicians as well as the common people.
Mamata Banerjee slammed the way the Central Government was being run by the Prime Minister, saying that “in the current situation, a national Government should be formed with another BJP person at the helm”; however, “‘he’ has to go”, referring to Prime Minister Modi. Crucially, she said “the President and the Supreme Court have important roles to play”.
To buttress her viewpoint, she further said, “To save this country, let a national Government be formed: Advani ji, Rajnath ji or Jaitleyji could head it. This current situation just unacceptable”.
Giving the example of her own State to put forth the devastation that demonetisation has brought across vast swathes of India, she said, “We have lost Rs 5,500 crore of revenue due to demonetisation in the last two months”; and, “over 1.7 crore people in the State have been affected due to demonetisation”.
Moreover, in the unorganised sector, “81.5 lakh workers have lost their jobs due to demonetisation in various sectors like tea, jute, jewellery, beedi, etc.”
Coming down hard on demonetisation, Mamata Banerjee said, “They are talking of cashless economy while the people are ‘cash less’”.
Due to this “cash less” state of the people, among other things, “farmers could not sow Rabi crops because of which there will be an effect on the prices of food”.
Her words underlined the fact that the hardship on the people, which began on November 8 with the sudden announcement of the decision of demonetisation, continues: “Restrictions on cash withdrawal have not yet been taken back. People cannot withdraw their own money”.
She said that she and her party, the Trinamool Congress, “welcome” the statement of the Honorary President yesterday, voicing “his concern about demonetisation”.
The Chief Minister said, “The Prime Minister is behaving like Kalidas, trying to cut the branch he is sitting on”.
She rightly accused the Central Government of dismantling the Planning Commission and setting up NITI Ayog, peopling it with their own men, who, however, “do not understand the country”.
She accused the Centre of diverting the people’s attention from the crucial issues by raking up “terrorism and hallabazi in the name of governance at the Centre”. “Does the Centre want us to carry out development or perform Modi Puja?”
She said, “We appeal to the President to save the country from the mess. It is time for President’s Rule at Centre”.
She also hit out at the Centre’s poking its nose unnecessarily in certain matters: for example, she said, “They are deploying CRPF in the State without even informing the State”.
She called on all the Opposition parties to “set aside the political differences, draft a Common Minimum Agenda and form a National Government at the Centre”.
Another decision that the Centre has taken, and that has affected workers badly, is the doing away with the Board for Industrial and Financial Reconstruction (BIFR), which restructures poorly performing industries to profitability. “This”, she said, “will affect workers and labourers immensely”, who are already suffering the effects of demonetisation.
Mamata Banerjee said, “All the institutions are under attack”. She warned the country that “this is a dangerous game” the Centre was playing and exhorted all the Opposition parties to rise up together.

শুক্রবার টাউন হলে প্রশাসনিক বৈঠকের পর নোট বাতিল ইস্যুতে ফের নরেন্দ্র মোদীকে তোপ দাগলেন মুখ্যমন্ত্রী মমতা বন্দ্যোপাধ্যায়।
এদিন ‘জাতীয় সরকার’ তৈরির দাবি জানিয়েছেন মুখ্যমন্ত্রী। এব্যাপারে রাষ্ট্রপতির হস্তক্ষেপ দাবি করে মুখ্যমন্ত্রী বলেন, “এই ‘জাতীয় সরকার ’-এর মাথায় যদি বিজেপি-র প্রবীণ সাংসদ লালকৃষ্ণ আডবাণী বা রাজনাথ সিংহ বা অরুন জেটলি জি কেও বসানো হয়, তাতেও তৃণমূলের কোনও আপত্তি থাকবে না। কিন্তু নরেন্দ্র মোদীকে পদত্যাগ করতেই হবে”।
তিনি বলেন, “নোট বাতিলের ফলে গত দুমাসে আমাদের ৫৫০০ কোটি টাকা রাজস্ব ক্ষতি হয়েছে। রাজ্যের ১.৭ কোটির বেশি মানুষ ক্ষতিগ্রস্ত। চা, জুট, গয়না বিভিন্ন শিল্পে সব মিলিয়ে ৮১ লক্ষ ৫০ হাজার মানুষ কর্মহীন হয়েছেন। কৃষকরা রবি শস্য চাষ করতে পারছেন না এর ফলে দ্রব্যমূল্য বৃদ্ধি পাবে। মানুষের কাছে যখন নগদ টাকা নেই তখন ওরা ক্যাশলেস অর্থনীতি চালু করছে।
মুখ্যমন্ত্রীর অভিযোগ, “দেশে এখন কোনও সরকার নেই। গণতান্ত্রিক অধিকারের উপরে বুলডোজার চালানো হয়েছে। দেশের মেরুদণ্ড ভেঙে দেওয়া হচ্ছে। দেশ চালানোর নামে শুধুই সন্ত্রাস আর হল্লাবাজি চলছে। রাজ্য সরকারকে না জানিয়ে গায়ের জোরে রাজ্যে সিআরপিএফ নামিয়ে দিচ্ছে। প্রত্যেকটা প্রতিষ্ঠানকে ধ্বংস করা হচ্ছে। এটা একটা সাংঘাতিক খেলা”।
তাঁর বক্তব্য “ভুলে যান কে কোন রাজনৈতিক দল করেন, দেশের স্বার্থে সকলে একত্র হয়ে সরকার গঠন করতে হবে। দেশকে সরবনাশের হাত থেকে বাঁচাতে প্রয়োজনে জাতীয় সরকার গঠন করা হোক। আমরা রাষ্ট্রপতির কাছে আবেদন করছি দেশটাকে বাঁচান। রাজনৈতিক বিরোধ ভুলে আমাদের উচিত Common Minimum Agenda বানিয়ে জাতীয় সরকার গঠন করা”।
মোদীকে ‘কালীদাস’ বলেও কটাক্ষ করে তিনি বলেন, প্রধানমন্ত্রী যে ডালে বসে আছেন সেই ডালই কেটে ফেলছেন।
