Trinamool Congress retains Bankura and Daspur Assembly

The results of the By-polling were declared on Friday and the Trinamool Congress has retained the Bankura and the Daspur Assembly seats in West Midnapore district, the two places where by-elections were held on June 12.

TMC candidate Minati Mishra won the Bankura seat by a margin of 15,139 votes defeating her nearest CPI(M) rival Nilanjan Dasgupta. She bagged 72,954 votes while Dasgupta polled 57,815 votes. Kashinath Mishra, whose death caused the by-election in Bankura, had won the seat by a margin of 29,080 votes in 2011 Assembly poll.

TMC candidate Mamata Bhuniya defeated Samar Mukherjee of the CPI-M in Daspur West Midnapur district by 18,919 votes. TMC candidate polled 94,860 votes and his CPI(M) rival bagged 75,941 votes.

Polling took place on Tuesday to fill in the two-seats that fell vacant due to the demise of sitting MLAs – Kashinath Mishra and Ajit Bhunia in Bankura Sadar and Daspur respectively. The widows of both the MLAs – Minati Mishra and Mamata Bhuniya contested the polls from Bankura Sadar and Daspur respectively.

The news of victory spread like wild fire and Trinamool activists were seen participating in jubilation. Trinamool Congress Chairperson and West Bengal Chief Minister Ms. Mamata Banerjee who is in New Delhi to hold talks with political parties in the run-upto the presidential candidature and is coming back today expressed her happiness and congratulated the Manati Maishra and Mamata Bhuniya for their victory.
