State Government to set up an Anti Corruption Branch to check corruption at all administrative levels

Kolkata: State Government to set up an Anti Corruption Branch under the Home department. The plan of setting up this branch  was approved  after the cabinet meeting convened at Writers' on Thursday which was presided over by  Chief Minister Ms. Mamata Banerjee.

“Corruption has become a major issue all over the nation. In view of this Chief Minister Ms. Mamata Banerjee had the idea to institute such a branch. The cabinet has approved her proposal in this regard. It will be headed by an inspector – general  rank officer ” said State Panchayat Minister after the meeting.
Previously West Bengal did have a vigilance commission, which could act only after receiving complaints. But this new branch would have powers to conduct suo motu investigations. It would have powers to investigate all Government agencies. If required the State Government may bring a new Act to make the branch effective enough.
