West Bengal Govt. sets up six-member commission to protect women/kids

The West Bengal State Government takes an initiative to constitute a six-member commission to safeguard the interest of children and women.

The decision was taken at the cabinet meeting held at Writers' Building today.

It was decided that a six-member commission will be constituted and headed by a Chairperson and Secretary.

Apart from that there will be four-officers and one of them will be the section officer. There will be other officials who will keep a close eye on the proceedings of the legalities in the cases.

'This commission will look after the interest of the children and women in the state and if required it will take adequate action against those found guilty of committing atrocities against the minors', informed Industry Minister.

'The state government is committed to protect child rights and preventing atrocities on them. The decision of forming the Child Rights Protection Commission is a step in that direction', added the minister.

The school education department had set up the Right To Education Protection Authority (REPA), though its activities were limited to only complaints relating to educational institutions. The Commission will be helpful in putting a stop in the incidents of corporal punishments on the rise across the state, with regular reports appearing in the media about cases in which corporal punishment was meted out to students.

The Commission will work independently and would suggest penal action against violators of child rights.
