How Kolkata with electric buses and ferries plans to fight air pollution

Kolkata is pioneering greener commutes citywide – and thanks to an innovative project to deploy more electric buses and ferries, the city now ranks fifth on a list of places that are reducing their annual emissions.
In fact, Kolkata is just behind megacities Chengdu, Delhi, London and New York in terms of reducing carbon emissions.
With 40 electric buses on the road and another 190 buses in the pipeline the city roads will have adequate environment friendly electric buses. This will cut down carbon emissions and reduce pollution in the city. All depots of West Bengal Transport Corporation located in Tollygunge, Kidderpore , Kasba , Gariahat, Park Circus, Rajabazar, Lake Gardens, Belgachia, Nabanna and Santragachi, have been provided with electric vehicle charging infrastructure. Some private organisations are also setting up facilities of electric vehicle charging in the city.
It may be mentioned that low carbon commute transition of Kolkata, with planned introduction of 5,000 e-buses and electrification of all ferries that will run across the Ganges river by 2030, was named one of the world’s seven best climate projects in Copenhagen, Denmark earlier this year.
