Successful ‘Sukanyas’ to be felicitated today

After the successful completion of the first two batches of the project, Sukanya that was taken up to provide self-defence training to schoolgirls, the Bidhannagar, Barrackpore and Howrah Police

Commissionerates have now taken steps to start the third batch.
Participants of all the three commissionerates will be felicitated at a programme to be held at Howrah Sarat Sadan on March 28. They will be given certificates.

It may be mentioned that the Sukanya project for all these three commissionerates was launched in July 2017. The project was introduced in the three commissionerates after it became immensely successful in Kolkata.

It is one of the dream projects of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and the initiative has provided an international platform to the girls who underwent self-defence training. Six girls had participated in the Kickboxing World Cup in 2016 held in Russia and won five gold medals, two silvers and two bronzes.

In the first phase, girl students of 26 schools in the jurisdiction of the three police commissionerates underwent training and they will be performing at the March 28.

মেয়েদের আত্মরক্ষার প্রশিক্ষণ দিতে শহরের কিছু স্কুলগুলিকে নিয়ে কলকাতা পুলিশ চালু করেছিল ‘সুকন্যা’ প্রকল্প। সেই প্রকল্পের সাফল্যের পর ২০১৭ সালে বিধাননগর, ব্যারাকপুর এবং হাওড়া পুলিশ কমিশনারেটের অন্তর্গত ২৬টি স্কুলে শুরু করা হয় এই প্রকল্প।

এই প্রকল্পের প্রথম দুই ব্যাচের প্রশিক্ষণ শেষ হয়েছে। তৃতীয় ব্যাচের প্রশিক্ষণ শুরু হবে শীঘ্রই। আজ হাওড়ার শরৎ সদনে এই কৃতী সুকন্যাদের সংবর্ধিত করা হবে।
প্রসঙ্গত, ২০১৬ সালে ৬ জন সুকন্যা রাশিয়ায় অনুষ্ঠিত কিক-বক্সিং বিশ্বকাপে অংশগ্রহণ করে। এই প্রতিযোগিতায় তারা পাঁচটি সোনার পদক, দুটি রুপোর পদক, দুটি ব্রোঞ্জ পদক জিতেছিল।

WB CM promises to set up a ‘Howrah Gate’

Keeping her promise of taking state secretariat to the districts, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday held an administrative review meeting at Sarat Sadan in Howrah and said holding 89 such meetings in about last four years is a record.

“With today’s meeting, we have completed 89 administrative review meetings in the state from CMO to BDO level which is a record”, WB CM.

After coming to power, WB CM had assured of taking the state secretariat to the people’s doorstep in districts and she had been regularly holding such meetings in different districts taking stock of the progress of various government schemes.

Stating that the performance of Howrah district was good as far as various schemes were concerned, she said that the issues like 100 days’ work, immunisation programme, hospitals and marketing hubs were discussed.

“No project can be left pending,” she told the government officials.

She also said that a “Howrah Gate” would be constructed. This large gateway will be constructed by the municipal corporation ahead of Nabanna on Kona Expressway. It will be built in memory of noted footballer and Howrah resident Sailen Manna and will have replicas of two footballs on top of it.

All praises for the Howrah civic body, WB CM lauded it for “best performance” among all municipal bodies across the state “within such a short span“.

CM also distributed cheques to a group of farmers affected by rain and hailstorm in the district.

Talking to reporters after chairing the meeting, Chief Minister said the state government was planning to merge Bally Municipality with the Howrah Municipal Corporation to widen the ambit of HMC and to deliver better civic facilities to a large number of people.

Kolkata Municipal Corporation led by Trinamool Congress is committed towards conservation and maintenance of Kolkata’s heritage.

With this goal in mind, the Corporation under several initiatives like acquiring the residence of Sister Nivedita or rejuvenation of Sarat Sadan.

  • Kolkata Municipal Corporation has acquired the residence of Sister Nivedita which has been handed over to Ramakrishna Mission for proper care and maintenance
  • The house adjacent to Swami Vivekanada’s house has been acquired for the same reason

  • Rejuvenation and modernisation of Mohit Mancha, Star Theatre and Sarat Sadan have been completed
  • Kolkata Municipal Corporation has acquired Uttam Mancha which has also been modernised
