On Friday , the Kolkata Municipa Corporation (KMC) launched four carbon-removing vehicles to clean the trees.

These vehicles, which are fitted with pumps, will be used to spray water on trees and roadside plants.

Debasish Kumar, the mayor in-council member overseeing the KMC parks department, credited Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee for influencing the civic body in introducing these machines to protect and enhance greenery of the city.

“These ma chines will help carbon-soaked plants to produce more oxygen,” he added.

Mayor Sovan Chatterjee, who inaugurated the special service, narrated a story behind buying these machines.

“Once I visited a garden in the city and noticed that the garden had lost its greenery due to pollution. I decided to water the trees regularly and when I visited the place again after two weeks, I saw the garden had turned into lushy green place. I got an idea to introduce such machines for watering trees and plants to bring back their shine,” he said.

The civic body would invest Rs 2 crore to buy eight more machines in phases, the mayor added.

According to a KMC official, these vehicles will be on Kolkata streets everyday in the morning.The drivers have been assigned in contract basis.

গাছের পাতা কার্বনমুক্ত করতে নতুন উদ্যোগ কলকাতা পুরসভার

গাছের পাতাকে সবুজ এবং কার্বনমুক্ত রাখতে শুক্রবার নতুন উদ্যোগ নিল কলকাতা পুরসভা।

পানীয় জলের গাড়িগুলিতেই জেনারেটর ও মোটর, পাইপ বসিয়ে পাতা ধোয়ার গাড়ির রূপ দেওয়া রয়েছে।

কলকাতা পুরসভার মেয়র পারিষদ দেবাশিস কুমার জানান, “মুখ্যমন্ত্রী মমতা বন্দ্যোপাধ্যায়ের নির্দেশে কলকাতাকে স্বচ্ছ-সুন্দর ও সবুজ করে তোলার জন্য এটি আর একটি পদক্ষেপ”।

তিনি আরও বলেন, “এই পাম্পগুলো গাছের পাতাকে কার্বনমুক্ত করে সেগুলিকে আরও অক্সিজেন মুক্ত করতে সাহায্য করবে”।

শুক্রবার কার্বন রিমুভার পাতা পরিষ্কারের গাড়ির উদ্বোধন করলেন কলকাতা পুরসভার মেয়র শোভন চ্যাটার্জি।

মেয়র বলেন, “কলকাতার গাছগুলোর সবুজ রঙ ও উজ্জ্বলতা ফিরিয়ে আনার জন্য আমরা এই মাশিন চালু করার কথা ঠিক করি। এই মেশিন গুলোর জন্য বরাদ্দ করা হয়েছে ২ কোটি টাকা”।

The Trinamool Congress-led Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) is keeping a strict eye on any signs of appearance of the Zika virus. The World Health Organisation (WHO) has declared the Zika virus as a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC) due to its rapid spread in some parts of the world.

KMC officials have said that the corporation anyway carries out cleanliness drives throughout the year. It also requests people to maintain basic hygiene in their surroundings. As a part of its cleanliness awareness programme, it is organising a workshop on February 27 (Saturday after next) at Uttam Mancha.

As a policy, KMC is always on the alert for the appearance of any vector-borne diseases like malaria, dengue et al. The civic health centres are involved in working on the diseases not only before the monsoon, but throughout the year to eliminate the occurrence of these diseases.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has praised the developmental work undertaken by the KMC. She has cited these works to be worth emulating by the other municipalities. The KMC’s health department would be helping others municipalities to fight vector-borne diseases.

তৃণমূল পরিচালিত কলকাতা পুরসভা জিকা ভাইরাস ঠেকাতে প্রস্তুত। এই ভাইরাসের আবির্ভাবকে বিশ্ব স্বাস্থ্য সংস্থা একটি আন্তর্জাতিক পাবলিক হেলথ এমারজেন্সির তকমা দিয়েছে।

পুরসভার আধিকারিকরা জানান সাড়া বছরই তারা সাফাই অভিযান চালিয়ে যান, মানুষকে অনবরত সতর্ক করেন ও তাদের বাড়ির চারপাশ পরিষ্কার পরিচ্ছন্ন রাখতে আবেদন করেন। এই বিষয়ে আগামী ২৭শে ফেব্রুয়ারি এই উপলক্ষে উত্তম মঞ্চে একটি ওয়ার্ক শপের আয়োজন করা হয়েছে।

নীতিগতভাবেই কলকাতা পুরসভা বিভিন্ন পোকা মাকড়জনিত রোগ- ম্যালেরিয়া, ডেঙ্গু ইত্যাদি বিষয়ে সবসময় সতর্ক থাকে। বর্ষার সময় শহরে যাতে এসব রোগের আবির্ভাব না হয় সেজন্য সাড়া বছর কলকাতা পুরসভার স্বাস্থ্যকেন্দ্রগুলি বিভিন্ন প্রতিরোধক ব্যবস্থা নেয়।

পশ্চিমবঙ্গের মাননীয়া মুখ্যমন্ত্রী মমতা বন্দ্যোপাধ্যায় পুরসভার এই অভিনব প্রয়াসের জন্য অনেক প্রশংসা করে বলেছেন বাকি পুরসভাদেরও এই পদক্ষেপ নেওয়া দরকার। কলকাতা পুরসভার স্বাস্থ্য বিভাগ বাকি পুরসভাগুলিকেও এই বিষয়ে শিক্ষা প্রদান করবে।

India’s first-ever Integrated Climate Cell at Kolkata Municipal Corporation has launched a mobile app for citizens that will give them alerts during natural disasters.

This first-of-its-kind app in the country is intended to give information to citizens on various eco-friendly measures and alerts during disasters as part of preparedness planning. The climate change cell has a rooftop solar feasibility calculator, another first-of-its-kind in the country. The initiative is expected to help people take steps at individual and collective levels to make a difference to the city.

The set-up of the climate change cell is being supported by UK under a two-year UK-Kolkata Municipal Corporation Programme, worth £1 million, of technical assistance on a low-carbon and climate-resilient Kolkata.

After the launch, member and mayor-in-council. KMC, Debashis Kumar, said, “We are the first city to launch the app. It will go a long way in creating awareness among people by letting them know the pollution levels and be alert.”

Besides this, KMC has taken several steps to improve the environment of the megacity, like constructing green medians along the city’s roads, planting lush green bushes along the footpaths of several streets and others.

 

আবহাওয়া ও প্রাকৃতিক বিপর্যয় সতর্কতা মূলক অ্যাপ কলকাতা পুরসভার

কলকাতা পুরসভার অধীনস্ত ভারতের ইন্টিগ্রেটেড ক্ল্যাইমেট সেল একটি অ্যাপ চালু করছে যার মাধ্যমে প্রাকৃতিক বিপর্যয়ের সময় সাধারণ মানুষকে সতর্ক করা হবে।

ভারতে প্রথম এই ধরনের অ্যাপ শুরু হবে। এর মাধ্যমে সাধারণ মানুষকে সতর্ক করার সঙ্গে সঙ্গে পরিবেশ বান্ধবও করে তোলা হবে। এই উদ্যোগ মানুষকে  ব্যক্তিগত ভাবে ও সমষ্টিগত পর্যায়ে পদক্ষেপ নিতে সাহায্য করবে বলে আশা করা হচ্ছে। এই ক্ল্যাইমেট সেলের ছাদে রয়েছে একটি সোলার ক্যালকুলেটর যা ভারতবর্ষে এই প্রথম। এই উদ্যোগ মানুষকে ব্যক্তিগত ও যৌথভাবে সাহায্য করবে।

এই ক্ল্যাইমেট সেলের মূল্য প্রায় ১ মিলিয়ন পাউণ্ড।

কলকাতা পুরসভার সদস্য ও মেয়র-ইন-কাউন্সিল দেবাশিস কুমারের মতে, আমরাই প্রথম এই অ্যাপ চালু করছি। এটি মানুষকে পরিবেশ দূষণের মাত্রা জানানোর মাধ্যমে আবহাওয়া সম্বন্ধে আরও সচেতন করবে।

এর পাশাপাশি সৌন্দর্যায়নের জন্য KMC আরও কিছু পদক্ষেপ নিয়েছে। রাস্তার মাঝখানে ডিভাইডার তৈরি করে  সেখানে বৃক্ষ রোপণ ও ফুটপাথের চারপাশে গাছ লাগিয়েও রাস্তাগুলিকে আরও সুন্দর করে তোলা হচ্ছে।

People of wards 129, 130 and 131 of Behala, Kolkata, are likely to get rid of drinking water woes as a booster pumping station was inaugurated today at Senpally in Ward No 129.

The pumping station was inaugurated by Mayor of Kolkata, Sobhan Chatterjee. State Urban Development Minister Firhad Hakim, Education Minister Dr Partha Chatterjee, AITC general secretary Subrata Bakshi were present at the occasion.

With inauguration of this 3 lakh gallon capacity pump, people of the area, including that of mayor’s ward are likely to get rid of water crisis, which has been a local issue for long.

Tate Education Minister Dr Partha Chatterjee said that the Government under Trinamool Congress is delivering the promises it made to the people.

The State Urban Development Minister Mr Firhad hakim said that Bengal is setting example for other States.

The Kolakata Mayor said water crisis in the city has been largely eradicated. There will be a time when the city will be100% tube-well free, he said.

The booster pumping station was today named after eminent lyricist Mohini Chowdhury.

 

নতুন বুস্টার পাম্পিং স্টেশন বেহালায়

বেহালা ১২৯ নং ওয়ার্ডের সেনপল্লীতে একটি নতুন বুস্টার পাম্পিং স্টেশন উদ্বোধন হয়েছে। ওয়ার্ড নং ১২৯, ১৩০ এবং ১৩১ এর অধিবাসীরা পানীয় জলের জন্য তৈরি হল এই বুস্টার পাম্পিং স্টেশন।

উদ্বোধনী অনুষ্ঠানে উপস্থিত থাকবেন কলকাতার মেয়র শোভন চ্যাটার্জি, রাজ্যের পুর ও নগরোন্নয়ন মন্ত্রী ফিরহাদ হাকিম, শিক্ষামন্ত্রী পার্থ চ্যাটার্জি, তৃণমূলের সাধারণ সম্পাদক সুব্রত বক্সী।

এই পাম্পের জলধারণ ক্ষমতা প্রায় ৩ লাখ গ্যালন। মেয়রের এলাকা সহ সব এলাকার পানীয় জলের সমস্যার সমাধান হবে এর মাধ্যমে।

রাজ্যের শিক্ষামন্ত্রী পার্থ চ্যাটার্জি বলেন যে তৃণমূল সরকার তাদের দেওয়া সমস্ত প্রতিশ্রুতি পূর্ণ করছে।

রাজ্যের পুর ও নগরোন্নয়ন মন্ত্রী ফিরহাদ হাকিম বলেন পশ্চিম বাংলা অন্যান্য রাজ্যের কাছে একটি দৃষ্টান্ত।

কলকাতার মেয়র বলেন, “শহরে পানীয় জলের অভাব মূলত নির্মূল হয়েছে। এরপর এমন একদিন আসবে যেদিন শহরকে ১০০ শতাংশ নলকূপ মুক্ত করা সম্ভব হবে”।

প্রয়াত গীতিকার মোহিনী চৌধুরীর নামে এই বুস্টার পাম্পিং স্টেশনের নামকরন করা হয়েছে।

Kolkata Municipal Corporation is gearing up to take measures to ensure street food vendors follow proper hygienic practices.

Street food in Kolkata, with phuchkas and aloo chats as its staple attraction, are a hit among citizens and outsiders as it is cheap and easily available. Since a large section of students dip into street food, KMC authorities feel the food items should be safe and are not allowed to be sold under unhygienic conditions.

“We want to make street foods safe in the city. It has been our focus to ensure that street food vendors maintain a standard of hygiene so that the customers will not have to be suspicious of the quality of food offered,” Atin Ghosh, member, mayor-in-council (health) said.

In keeping with the guidelines formulated in the seminar, KMC health department, under the supervision of Mr Ghosh, has decided to formulate their own regulatory guidelines taking into account the demand of the city.

Use of safe, potable running water will be a key measure to be taken under the guidelines being worked out since water that is unsafe for consumption cause a variety of diseases. The vendors must also ensure proper garbage disposal and that food is handled in a scientific way. A certain level of temperature is maintained while cooking the food is also being considered.

In one of the biggest water projects ever considered in Kolkata, the civic body plans to link two of its major water pumping stations through a 70-km-long pipeline, creating a ‘water grid’ that will not only end the city’s water woes in five years but also prepare it for the future.

Kolkata Municipal Corporation has submitted the proposal to the state government to be included in the AMRUT scheme. It will cost a whopping Rs 1,400 crore and ensure uninterrupted supply of filtered water to every home even in the added areas and protect groundwater from further depletion.

The plan is to link Palta waterworks near Barrackpore with the Garden Reach water treatment plant in the south-western part of the city.

Once the link-up happens, KMC can get water from Palta to supply all the ‘dry’ areas.

The new pipeline will run along EM Bypass till Garia and then travel along Tolly’s Nullah to Kudghat, where it will take a left turn to meet MG Road and finally merge with an existing line on James Long Sarani to link up with the Garden Reach network.

An added advantage of running the pipeline along EM Bypass is that the newly built Dhapa water treatment plant will also be connected with both Palta and Garden Reach waterworks.

Mayor Sovan Chatterjee is gung ho about the project and said it will be “really useful” to the city.

Buoyed by the warm response to its pilot project on piping filtered water to some apartment complexes, Kolkata Municipal Corporation has decided to lay a dedicated water pipeline to supply filtered water from the Dhapa plant to all major complexes along EM Bypass.

In the first phase, KMC will lay a 24-inch pipeline along EM Bypass, which will be linked to all major housing complexes. In the second phase, based on applications from the cooperative societies, the civic body will install water meters in these apartments.

Mayor Sovan Chatterjee said that the civic body would definitely supply filtered water to the major housing complexes along the EM Bypass as part of a plan to ban drawing of ground water.

“We need to supply filtered water to the multistoried buildings and housing complexes. This is necessary to save city’s groundwater from being depleted,” he said.

KMC service centre on way

The KMC authorities have decided to build a citizens’ service centre adjacent to the civic headquarters on S N Banerjee Road. The construction will begin in December with an 18-month deadline in mind.

The G+ IV building will be constructed on a 12 cottah plot where the Chaplin cinema building once stood.

Once the building was complete, it would ease the pressure from the headquarters as some of the departments, like the treasury , trade licence and information technology, will be shifted to the new set up.

According to plans, the civic body will open up a whole floor for the citizens’ service centre. This centre will be modelled after some of the cash collection centres set up in different locations across the city .

“We will dedidate a 6,000 sq ft floor to the tax payers who can turn up at the new centre for paying property tax bills. Traders will also be entertained to pay their trade licence renewal fee at the new centre. Once construction is complete, we will offer a single window system for our citizens to avail of different civic services,” mayor Sovan Chatterjee said.

West Bengal Tourism department and Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) have joined hands to decorate the city with lights before Durga Puja.

All entry-exit points to the city would be decorated with light gates and important buildings and road crossings would be decorated with chain lights.

According to tourism department guidelines, the illumination would be done from October 18 to October 26 for 12 hours starting from 5.30 pm.

It’s a unique initiative on the part of the Government and KMC. Illuminating the city is something new and exciting.

Decorative light gates would be put up temporarily at Second Hooghly Bridge and Howrah Bridge. Important road crossings that would be illuminated with decorative chain lights include Shyambazar, Dalhousie, Dorina, Park Street, Elliot Park, Rabindra Sadan, National Library, Belvedre, Hazra, Rashbehari Avenue, Gariahat flyover and the riverfront.

All important and landmark buildings of Kolkata too would be illuminated with chain lights during the festive days. These buildings would include government and heritage buildings that usually attract tourists round the year.

The State Transport department has also taken decision to run Govt buses all through the night during the Puja days. Conductors and drivers will work in two shifts- day and night, to ease the worries of the pandal hoppers.

Mayor Sovan Chatterje has announced Rs 10,000 grant for puja committees formed exclusively by women in the city. The initiative aims to encourage women to organise pujas in the city.

In the monthly meeting held at Kolkata Municipal Corporation today,the mayor announced this special subscription to the puja committees headed by women. The amount provided will come from sponsors who fund different puja committees in the city.

The move was announced by the Chief Minister a few days ago,where the KMC will act as the nodal agency with the job of providing the allotted amount.

This move will help out the puja committees formed by women which usually find themselves strapped for funds. Unable to find sponsorship, such committees are sometimes forced to close down as they cannot find advertisements. The CM’s initiative comes as a relief to such puja committees.
