WBKVIB to take up silk khadi project, involving 14 districts

Buoyed by the success of the project on muslin khadi, the West Bengal Khadi & Village Industries Board (WBKVIB) is taking up a project for development of silk khadi in Bangla. The project will encompass 14 of the 23 districts.
The main objective is to train artisans in churning out products as per the present market demand, said the CEO of WBKVIB, for which it will provide them with infrastructure and importantly, create a platform for marketing of their products. Among the other issues that will be addressed are storage facility, quality control and testing facility, and branding.
The 14 districts earmarked for the project have been divided into two categories – backward and non-backward. In the ‘backward’ category are Paschim Medinipur, Purba Medinipur, Bankura, Birbhum, Malda, Murshidabad, Purulia, Dakshin Dinajpur and Uttar Dinajpur, while in the ‘non-backward’ category are Purba Bardhaman, Paschim Bardhaman, Hooghly, Howrah and Nadia.
In the ‘backward’ category districts, 2,340 artisans will be trained while in the ‘non-backward’ category districts, 1,900 artisans will be imparted training.
It may be mentioned that at present there are about 31 khadi institutions and societies working in the area of silk khadi in Bengal.
