Three-day Baghbazar Rosogolla Utsav from Dec 28

Three-day Baghbazar Rosogolla Utsav from Dec 28

Rosogolla is a pride of Bangla, something for which Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee put in a lot of effort to have it registered as a geographical indication (GI) in 2017. November 14, the day the GI registration was granted, was celebrated as Rosogolla Dibas this year.

Now, a three-day festival is going to be held in Baghbazar, Kolkata from December 28. The reason for choosing Baghbazar is significant. It was in his shop here in the middle of the 19th century that Nobin Chandra Das made the first sweet, spongy ball of cottage cheese (chana), which he named ‘rosogolla’.

The festival will see rosogollas of various types and flavours from the leading brands (sweet shops) of Kolkata as well as the districts. The festival will be attended by famous names in various fields. It will also host performances by singers and poets, and an adda session featuring celebrities.

Among the other big attractions of the festival would be a rosogolla-cooking competition, a rosogolla-eating competition and a quiz contest on the sweet.
