Tax sops for green and clean drives: Kolkata Mayor

Cleaning and greening the city has been one of the major thrust areas of Mamata Banerjee. Kolkata’s new Mayor announced a slew of measures to that end.
On December 3, soon after taking oath of office, he announced plans to roll out tax benefits of up to 90% to anyone who plants large trees on his/her property. He also announced tax benefits to residents of apartment complexes who modernise the waste removal process at their complexes.
Apart from the mentioned benefits, the new Mayor also announced property sops for owners of ponds or waterbodies who take up proper preservation measures.
He said it was his duty to ensure supply of safe drinking water in large parts of the southern fringes and some areas off the EM Bypass. Residents of Jadavpur, Tollygunge, and areas off the bypass are still dependent on groundwater. Providing them with treated water is on his priority list, he said.
The Mayor also said that the civic body would have to strive hard to provide relief to the thousands of residents who have been suffering from flooding in their respective areas because of a sewerage and drainage network. Along with it, he will also take up beautification projects for the entire city in a major way.
As part of a citizen-friendly initiative, the mayor declared on Monday that he would personally monitor Kolkatans’ grievances. “If a citizen comes across a collapsing civic service, be it the condition of a road, a bridge or pavements, send a message with a photograph of the service. I will personally monitor and try to find a solution to the problem,” he said.
