Significant reduction in pollution of Ganga post idol immersion

A recent report from the West Bengal Pollution Control Board has shown that pollution level in river Ganga is comparatively lower this year after the immersion process during Durga Pujo and Kali Pujo.
The lead content of colour applied on idols is one of the major reasons of pollution of Ganga post immersions during festive season. However, WBPCB data has shown this year the lead content in water remained unchanged before and after immersion.
Samples of water taken from the ‘ghats’ of the Ganga have not shown serious increase in such metallic content after immersion processes were over. Also, there has not been much change in the pH values, Biological Oxygen Demand (BOD) and other such parameters.
Awareness among idol makers and responsiveness of the KMC led to this achievement. During immersion, all the pujo materials, except the idol are now dumped in a separate spot near the ‘ghats’. This has effected in the unchanged values of pH and BOD levels.
