Monitoring roads using artificial intelligence

For the first time in Bangla, artificial intelligence (AI) is being used for monitoring roads. The New Town Kolkata Development Authority (NKDA) has started implementing this cutting-edge technology in New Town’s Action Area I, and would extend it to Action Area II and III.
A GPS-enabled camera with a 130-degree field of view is mounted on a vehicle. As the vehicle moves around, the camera records road condition images, identifies the latitude-longitude markers and saves it on a server. Performing video analytics, it judges the severity of the issues and classifies them according to their locations and severity in a table format.
Apart from identifying potholes and similar maintenance issues, the camera can also spot roadside issues such as stacks of construction materials, unauthorised roadside stalls, etc. It needs to be mentioned that corrective action will be taken up promptly.
The AI Committee constituted by the State Information Technology Department has selected this technology, which has been developed by a startup.
