Centre accedes to Bengal`s request, Sagar Islands included in Clean Ganga Project

West Bengal government had reputedly requested the Centre to include the state in its Clean Ganga Project. The State Irrigation and Waterways Minister Mr Rajib Banerjee had met the Central Minster in this regard. Finally, the Centre has acceded to the State's request to include the Sagar Islands and Ganga river stretch, flowing through the state, in Clean Ganga project and approved it on Monday.

Developing Gangasagar

The state irrigation and waterways department minister who attended the meeting representing the Bengal government, said that previously, the river stretch up to Baranasi came under the purview of Clean Ganga project.

“We urged the Centre to include the stretch of river flowing through our state in the project. The proposal has been approved in today's meeting. Now, the entire Ganga river stretch flowing through West Bengal, including the Gangasagar, has been brought under the purview of Clean Ganga scheme. With this, work on Gangasagar rejuvenation will start soon,” Mr Banerjee said.

Boosting tourism

The state had earlier planned to include the Sagar Islands in the NGRBA scheme with special focus on solid waste management, sewerage treatment and beach development. Chief Minister Ms Mamata Banerjee has been stressing on developing Sagar Islands as an international standard tourism hub. The government had earlier constituted the Gangasagar Development Authority to spruce up infrastructure in the area.

Chief Minister Ms Mamata Banerjee is scheduled to visit the Sagar Islands on October 30, along with senior government officials, with an aim to explore tourism scope in the area. There is a sun-baked virgin beach dotted with mangroves and other plants that can be developed as a potential tourist destination. The plan will be presented before the Chief Minister when she visits the area.
