Bangla Krishi Sech Yojana to help small & marginal farmers
The State Government, at its cabinet meeting on September 12, gave its approval for the Bangla Krishi Sech Yojana (BKSY) to extend support to farmers in setting up micro-irrigation facilities that will ensure cultivation using less amount of water.
The project will be immensely helpful to small and marginal farmers, especially in the Jangalmahal region, where water supply is scarce.
There are places in districts like Purulia and Bankura which receive scanty rainfall. In these conditions, micro-irrigation technology will ensure cultivation of crops, mainly fruits and vegetables, using less water.
Among the processes under micro-irrigation, the State Agriculture Department has identified two artificial processes – drip irrigation and sprinkle irrigation – through tests and trials, to be of more help and which hence would be adopted.
The cost of adopting these processes, of around Rs 70,000 per acre and Rs 20,000 per acre, respectively, would not have to be borne by the small and marginal farmers. The State Government would entirely pay for them, for which a corpus of Rs 35 crore has been created under BKSY. Since irrigation is a continuous process, the amount would go up later with the success of the project.
Experts will be engaged by the government to support the farmers to carry out the project. The State Government will make the payments to the experts only after receiving a feedback from the farmers as well as proper scrutiny of the help provided.
