Bangla Govt launches ‘Medhabi Bhata’ scholarship in Mahatma Gandhi’s honour
The Bangla Government has decided to introduce a scholarship scheme called ‘Medhabi Bhata’ in honour of Mahatma Gandhi. This is part of the series of projects and programmes of the State Government to celebrate the 150th birth anniversary of the ‘Father of the Nation’ in 2019.
This scheme was announced by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee while addressing a gathering during a programme at Gandhi Bhavan in Beliaghata, Kolkata. The Higher Education Department will be implementing the scholarship scheme.
Among the projects taken up by the government on the occasion, as mentioned by the Chief Minister in her speech, is the restoration of Gandhi Bhavan, including the museum inside, at a cost of Rs 3.5 crore, the building of a university named after the Mahatma in Tamluk in Purba Medinipur district and the institution of a chair in his name in Calcutta University.
