Achievements of the Sports Wing of the Youth Services & Sports Department
The Sports Wing of the State Youth Services & Sports (YSS) Department has had several commendable achievements under the Trinamool Congress Government.
The primary achievements are as follows:
FIFA U-17 World Cup: Most significant achievement was the conducting of the 11 matches of the 2017 FIFA U-17 World Cup.
Sporting infrastructure: Since May 2011, almost Rs 400 crore released for various sports-related infrastructure.
Khelasree Scheme: Grants-in-aid to the tune of Rs 2 lakh each sanctioned in favour of clubs, organisations and sports associations for the first year, and Rs 1 lakh each in subsequent years.
Awards:
- Khel Samman- For current achievers, carrying a cash prize of Rs 50,000, a certificate and a trophy
- Banglar Gaurav- For past players who have brought glory to their respective disciplines, carrying a cash prize of Rs 1 lakh, a certificate and a trophy
- Krira Guru- For distinguished coaches, carrying a cash prize of Rs 1 lakh, a certificate and a trophy
- Lifetime Achievement Award- For extremely well-respected and internationally renowned sportspersons from Bangla, carrying a cash prize of Rs 5 lakh, a certificate and a trophy
- Till now, from financial year (FY) 2013-14 to 2017-18, 100 Khel Samman awards, 127 Banglar Gaurav awards, 35 Krira Guru awards, 10 Lifetime Achievement awards and 19 Bishesh Samman awards have been given.
Bengal Football Academy in Khardah: The only one of its kind in the entire country (inaugurated by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on September 28, 2013 at Khardah Vivekananda Stadium), it is affiliated to the All India Football Federation (AIFF); participated in the Under-19 Youth League; running successfully with 40 trainees.
Archery Academy in Jhargram: Residential academy providing training to 32 students selected from different corners of the State.
Khatra Sports Academy: This sports academy in Khatra in Bankura is to be made operational soon.
Bengal Tennis Academy at Salt Lake: Located at the Yuba Bharati Stadium complex, providing training to 50 children.
Hockey & swimming academies: State Hockey Academy at Salt Lake and State Swimming Academy at Subhas Sarobar are in the pipeline.
Non-residential coaching camps: Held at subdivision level for development of skills among budding talents from backward communities and areas in various disciplines, like football,
kabaddi, kho kho, volleyball, basketball, etc.
Sports competitions in the Sundarbans and Darjeeling-Terai-Dooars: Sports competitions being organised in the Sundarbans and the Darjeeling-Dooars-Terai region to encourage the mainstreaming of these regions.
Cash prizes for National Games medallists: Cash prizes awarded to medal winners in the National Games for the very first time by the State Government – Rs 5 lakh each for 6 gold medallists, Rs 3 lakh each for 12 silver medallists, Rs 2 lakh each for 30 bronze medallists
New Sports Policy: New Sports Policy approved by the State Cabinet and published in 2015.
Stadium committees: Various stadium committees set up for the smooth functioning and maintenance of stadiums.
Financial assistance to sports councils: District Sports Councils and Sub-divisional Sports Councils provided with financial assistance every year since May 2011, when Trinamool Congress came to power, for conducting sports events, coaching camps, etc.
Financial assistance for new sporting talents: New sporting talent being provided financial assistance to participate in various national and international events.
